Just to show how strange life can be at times...

I'm one of the founding committee members of a charty motorcycle ride that raises money for cancer patients and their families. Today was the day that we presented the proceeds from last year's event. Below is the quick mention in the local paper. My father-in-law (throat cancer, d. 2002) and Matt have been in my heart and mind during the entire day.

The Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer, a motorcycle ride to benefit cancer patients and families throughout Northeastern Wisconsin, presented checks totaling $65,650 to seven local cancer support organizations Wednesday at the Lambeau Field Atrium.

The funds distributed were raised in last year's Cruise for Cancer, the third annual event which drew nearly 800 participants on more than 500 motorcycles. The fourth annual ride is scheduled for Saturday, June 9.

Parins, the Packers director of corporate security and a cancer survivor himself, presented the checks to the following organizations: Compassionate Care Fund (to benefit St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette and Door County Memorial Hospital in Sturgeon Bay), the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System at St. Vincent, Families of Children with Cancer, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Ribbon of Hope, Unity Hospice, and the St. Vincent Pediatric Center.

Parins noted how much the event has grown in its three years, from raising $27,500 its first year to more than twice that now. He hopes to get perhaps as many as 1,000 people for this year's ride.

"We have grown each year and I have established some very, very special friendships," Parins said. "The one goal of all of us was to put smiles on people's faces and their families that are dealing with cancer.

"The heart of this ride is really about the people, people that are helping other people."

For this year's ride, pre-registration forms are currently available through www.cruiseforcancer.org or at Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo and Vandervest Custom Cycles in Green Bay. A $10 donation per person is required to participate in the ride. Riders who pre-register by June 5 are eligible for a chance to win a prize.

On the day of the ride, registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the Lambeau Field parking lot near the Mills Fleet Farm Gate at the southwest corner of the stadium. Registration also will occur at Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo beginning at 9 a.m.

The ride will leave Lambeau Field at approximately 11 a.m. Packers players and personnel will be on hand to make appearances prior to the ride.

The first leg of the ride will lead to Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo. Upon arrival in Peshtigo, food and beverage options, provided by Kroll's West, will be available for purchase. Elite Music Services will provide music for the gathering before the riders head back to Green Bay.

Following the completion of the ride, a tailgate party will be held beginning at 3 p.m. in the Lambeau Field parking lot. A raffle, auction and music will be part of the festivities. The tailgate party is free and open to everyone, not just riders.

Thanks to all those that have contributed so far!!!

thank you Kristi, and Dave S, Acidburn and Ragnagwar!!!

Alex and Milo were in attendance at the visitation with Matt's family in Grand Rapids last night, said the place was packed, and that Mitch and Lori are doing all right, considering.

i'm hoping that Alex will chime in with a bit of a ride report from his weekend once he gets safely back home.

A celebration of Matt's life will be held today, Saturday May 12th, at:

Madison Square CRC Church
1434 Madison Ave. S.E.
Grand Rapids MI 49507

The service will begin at 1 pm.

Interment will be immediately after at:

Kristi, you're welcome. Gary/Acidburn is a regular on SacBORG.

this, thus, would be a great time to thank SacBORG for being a part of our fundraising effort for the Ware Family, not only by letting me start and maintain a fundraising thread on their board, but also by monetary donations to Matt's trust fund, and involvement in Matt's benefit auction.

thank you Vik and Chop and SacBORG. : )

ALL: i got an e-mail from Milo this afternoon. Matt's services were today in Grand Rapids, and Milo attended. he gave me permission to post his e-mail here on the board:

The service was about 2 hours long.
Seems like a long time, as I type that.
But it didn’t seem that long.
A lot of people (including Alex) spoke of their relationship with Matt.

I'm going to put in here the words (verbatim) from the Memorial that was
given out at the church:

I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I am free,
As I follow the path God made for me,
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play,
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that Peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy,
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Oh yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow,
My life's been full, I savored so much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief,
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now -- He set me free.

Author unknown

thx Milo, and thank you to everyone who continues to keep Mitch and Lori and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

ride in peace, Matt Ware.

98s1 - you're on the main Matt Ware donation thread. Look for the Matt Ware Auction thread and under all the pictures and narrative you will find the individual auction threads.

It is a bit confusing because they have the same pics, etc. at the top.

folks, were right at $7400 for our combined fundraising efforts for Matt and his family.

THANK YOU EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!

if you haven't donated yet, you've still got a little time to do so, and know that ANY money you can toss in, even if it's only a couple of bucks, is for a very good cause.

all the pertinent donation info is posted at the top of this page. Kristi would love to hear from you (she likes to stay busy ;) ), and we need just a little additional help to meet Court's "ALL THE WAY TO $10K!!" challenge.

can YOU help?

i knew you could. : )

Everyone,
You guys are great. There is no other way to say it. You are difference makers, and genuinely great people. In life there are many who just pass through getting and taking, gathering up ‘stuff’ and taking care of number one! Then there are those who make a profound positive impact on those around them. Those who have a heart for others less fortunate or in need of a hand (not a handout). You are the later. The BadWeatherBikers are more then hobbyists, you are wonderful folks with huge hearts and more purpose, than any other group of people I know. You have made a huge difference in our son Matt’s ability to go to heaven knowing that the ‘books’ have been closed with integrity and honor.

Matt was the kind of guy who was very honest and a man of his word. He never ignored a debt. He paid his bills early or on time. He hated late fees! He was a good manager of money, but he didn’t count on this fate coming so soon in his life. He was a generous soul who has literally given the shirt (and one time, a new winter coat) off of his back. The BadWeatherBikers are of that same ilk. You are people of substance, compassion, and integrity. You are difference makers, and you are a huge blessing to those around you.

At the risk of forgetting someone or mixing up a few names, we would like to publicly thank a couple of your members: Alex, thanks bud for being such a great friend to our son Matt. I know you guys have some great memories and worked through some tough years at school, but it was well worth it. Your parents have a lot to be proud of!! Jerry, thanks for coming up here last summer (Denise, thank you for sharing him with us) and getting personally involved! Matt really enjoyed you guys and was looking forward to getting together with you again, perhaps he is working on that one in the Buell garage in heaven… imagine that… that place must be awesome! He loved bikes, but he loved his mother more (who is terrified of them) and well… you can imagine the deal there… she won that battle. But now, well, my guess is that there is some serious rubber being laid down on those streets of gold… J Kristi, thank you for bringing not only your compassion and heart, but your accounting skills to this endeavor. Having someone like you in the mix gives everyone a high level of comfort when it comes to working with the money. You are the best! Ulywife, thank you for all of your hard work, great ideas and organizational skills. Milo, thank you for your courage. You got on your bike, and rode up to a stranger’s deathbed just to shake his hand and be a comfort to him. Not many people in this world have that sort of courage, I am so glad you do. Thank you to everyone who put up items for auction and sale. You guys are incredible!! Thank you to all of you who have spent your hard earned money to purchase these items. You guys have raised a ton of money and I assure you that each every penny will help and make a huge difference in being able to pay Matt’s expenses. Any money left over is going to the American Cancer Society for research. And thank you Mr. Buell for bringing such an incredible bike to the world! Without that bike, these folks would not have ever met.

It is indeed an honor to know you all if only through your emails, posts and good deeds. I wish I could shake each and every one of your hands, look you in the eye and say thank you. Perhaps we will meet one day. In the meantime, please know that if you are ever in Grand Rapids or the west Michigan area, you have family here and our welcome mat is out for you!!

May God continue to richly bless each and every one of you as you journey down the roads of life. May His smile shine down upon you and may He continue to reveal Himself and His wondrous creation to you as you travel the highways and byways of this great land. And at the end of each day, may He bring you back home safely to your loved ones, with a full measure of peace and joy in your hearts!

Best regards and thank you again!
Mitch and family

Here's some good news!

For a quick run down, here is what we have deposited/mailed to Chase Bank so
far. The #5 letter will go out tomorrow (5/31/07).

Letter #1 $ 300.00
Letter #2 $ 70.00
Letter #3 $ 575.00
Letter #4 $ 515.00
Letter #5 $8,829.00 (NOT a typo!!)

This gives us a total of $10,289.00 to Matt's Trust Fund in Grand Rapids so far!

These figures represent the general donations, auction proceeds and Matt Ware Patch sales. When all is said and done, I will show a break out of those funding sources.

Thanks to all of you, BadWeB has been able to really make a difference for the Ware Family. You guys rock!

Kristi

Mitch, thank you for registering and posting here on our humble board, we are indeed honored.

BadWeB answered the call in truly impressive fashion, and i am grateful and proud to be associated with such a fine group of people.

i've jokingly said several times that this is all Alex's fault - if it weren't for him we'd have never known of Matt, and our lives would be vastly poorer for that.

Alex set the example, of friendship, love and compassion. his actions with regards to Matt's plight, including his Ride Across North America in Matt's honor, paved the way for the rest of us to follow, and he must have blazed a pretty big trail, because there are sure a lot of people from around the world who tucked in behind him these past three years.

Kristi/Ulywife has gone so far above the call of duty i struggle finding appropriate words. she not only has managed the various donation funds as they have rolled in, but along with that has accepted the weighty responsibility of having to answer any "difficult" questions that may arise in the future as far as accounting for every penny of the donations.

i agree with your assessment of Milo's courage. his visit with Matt at Trillium Woods that day was a huge catalyst here on the board in terms of our fundraising efforts, and i commend him on that courage, and on his compassion. his help with the fundraisers, both in front of and behind the scenes, has been invaluable.

Blake Rudy, owner and founder of BadWeatherBikers, deserves another round of props, too. raising money via a web site such as ours, particularly SIGNIFICANT money, brings with it risk, responsibility and "exposure," and i thank him again for his counsel as we ramped up the fundraisers, and for his ultimate permission to use BadWeB for this great cause.

Mitch and Lori, it's been said by hundreds of people on this board, and i say it again: thank you for sharing your grace and courage under such heartbreaking circumstances. for all the gifts that we may have given you and your family, we have received those same gifts and a hundred fold more in return for the privilege of being a small part of Matt's life.

as Milo put it so eloquently above: duty called, and it was our honor.

Matt Ware, ride in peace.

Ferris & Denise
