I have a 1996 Cavalier that I have been using to get back and forth to work for a year or two now and its about to be replaced by my winter project. I have tried to sell it on Craigslist. I have posted it on several free classifieds and even tried to part it out with no luck. It's in good shape but has a ton-o-highway miles. Nearly 170k. It has a bunch of go fast parts on it from the previous owner and the suspension on it is amazing but its lived its life in my mind. Before I break down an try to sell it on eBay (an probably take a rapin) I was considering an alternative and was looking for some feedback. I am a fulltime Audi wrench and would like nothing more than to beat the tar out an unsuspecting car daily. Being as the cars I generaly work on cost more than my house that isn't gonna happen. This bring up a very good stress relief. Would anyone be interested in paying like $2 for 2 minutes of beating on a car with a sledge hammer or an axe or even a pickaxe? I have seen things like that at local redneck fairs and dealer promotions but never attended one. Our glass guy would remove all of the windows from the car and I would strip all of the valuable parts off of it (wheels and suspension). Then pick a good day and let her rip. My General Manager is a bit leary but with 12 dealerships within walking distance of where I am there should be no shortage of technicians to take a whack at it. Would you pay to wear a car out with a big f-n hammer? I bet it would be more fun and bring more than selling it outright and be a better value for the participants than any buyer would get. I think you should leave the glass in, put on crappy rims and tires. Then set up a pay scale. IE Slash tires....$$$ Break windshield...$$$ Break side glass...$$$ Hit with sledge...$$$ Hit with pick axe...$$$ and so on. You could charge different prices for the things you think people wanna take out the most  | |||

At $2 a shot, you might be able to let 40 or so people take a whack at it, before it's damaged to the point that it's no fun for the next guy. Yeah, $80 for a car that runs well is probably almost enough to pay to haul it off. | |||

We did that in college as a fund raiser for our rugby team. $3 a hit $10 for 15 seconds. Removed Glass and made everyone wear eye protection. We had a assortment of Sledge hammers and picks. One guy donated this blown up junker, I pulled it behind my truck to one of the main quads, we made almost a grand in one afternoon. We called a salvage company and they picked up the pile of metal for free after we were done. It was a Hundayi accent, one professor had one just like it. He spent $100 with us. Lets just say he really enjoyed it. Ill see if I can find some pix for yall. | |||

If yo take the car to the junkyard, don't they give you a couple of bills? And if you trade it, you'll get at least the same (but it might negatively affect the price of what you are buying. Asbjorn | |||

Donate it to some school auto shop and write it off for fair market value.Get some good will out of it. | |||

You can bring it to a salvage yard and get ~150 for it or you could donate it and get a nice tax break for donating it to charity. I believe that it is a $2500 write-off for donating. | |||

Kidney Foundation, Viet Nam Vets and others will be glad to take it off your hands. I do understand that they tightened the tax rules for your deduction in the last year or two. You used to be able to claim "fair market value" (i.e.- NADA or KBB value). Now I'm told you can only claim what the charity actually sells the car for, and you have to wait to get the actual sales receipt from them (they usually auction the cars). I'd investigate before I went that route. | |||

my cars are a 93, 94, and a 95. i must be WAY behind... heck, i'm hunting around to upgrade to a 97 or 98 simply because i dont like the motors in the new chevy 4x4 and yes. i know plenty that would take some whacks at it. maybe you cant get rid of it because you are asking to much??? | |||

What are you looking to get for it? Is it all ghettoed out or something? If it's a 1996 Cavalier with 170k on it and it runs and drives fine, it's worth at least $500. $2 for 2 minutes - is that going to cover the lawsuit when some jackass hurts themselves doing it? | |||

Contact your local radio station, Rock station, they might have some ideas they could help you with. First, get someone to wear the motor and tires out. Secondly, get someone to pay you to advertise on the car. Thirdly, get someone to pay you to beat the car up. Lastly, get someone to pay you to burn it up. OR Donate it to Federation of the Blind and get a tax write off. (why do blind people need cars) | |||

Here I was thinking that it was going to be in the same age league as the 1940 Plymouth RoadKing that is hogging the other half of my garage. (I bought it because Harley has a RoadKing and thought it would be a nice tie in. )

I bought it from a trade in at my dealer and it only cost $800 two years ago. It had NO interior, all of the carpet, rear seats, trim etc were missing. No center console etc. It looks like a failed attempt at autocross. The coilovers are super stiff and the wheels, believe it or not are the nicest thing on the whole car. There is no cat converter so I can't get anything for that, the engine is iron and the aluminum head is the only thing worth selling to the metal guy. The core guy wouldn't give anything for the trans (I asked). I had to "find" someone to state inspect it for me under the assumption that I would forget him after I left. The new tax law is for fair market value and I assure you that as noble as that would be I would prob get charged for wasting the towtruck drivers time. When it was on craigslist I was offered a cool $100 to offer it up for the local demo derby, not worth it. I talked to the rep from Lincoln tech and they don't want modified cars for teaching right now. Their performance class is mostly hondas and V8's. Nothin special about the cavy but if it were an Ecotec it would be taken. Noone wants the old pushrod engine. I figured since it embodies the term BEATER that it would be a fitting end. Also considered trying to get it to pass tech at VIR and literally going for broke. | |||

i'm pretty sure that when it come's to donations it is kbb or equivalent. people used to be able to put down what ever they wanted. my daughter just did this for her taxes for last year. but double check to make sure. | |||

According to the Kidney Foundation's website, the law changed in Nov. 2004 and here's what it now says: - Charities must disclose to their donors and the IRS the gross proceeds raised on the sale of their donated vehicle when the vehicle sells for $500.00 or more; - Donors must use the gross selling price reported by the charity as the vehicle’s value for tax purposes if the vehicle sells for $500.00 or more. Take it out in a field and ramp packed dirt up both sides of it and make it into a tabletop jump for your dirt bikes and quads! A buddy of mine did this with an old AMC Eagle and it worked great. | |||

I kinda have a conscience about selling/donating a car that I know has internal engine issues. The car has a hot rod knock only noticeable in traffic. If you continue to move or have a cool day it not noticeable but sitting at idle you can watch the temp go up marginally and eventually you get to hear the rapping of a rod/piston etc. I was gonna put a junk yard engine and keep on getting it but after the second one with a cracked head the junk yard nearest me couldn't find a solid engine. I was then gonna order a reman online but they are more expensive than the car was. I found a Caprice on eBay for a whopping $460 and trust me small block parts are WAY cheaper and easier to come by than 2.2 non-ecotec pieces. When I had to replace the leaking injectors and fuel regulator it cost $200 more than the replacement carb for the Caprice. I don't need three cars and a truck for the wife and me so one has to go. The cost prohibitive nature of the Econo-box Cav and the headaches it has caused lately just make me want to light it on fire. I did however find a guy that would take it and let me shoot it up with a WWII MG42. All I have to do is drive it down range at his Shooting Gallery. That would be awesome but I'd have to pay to get it towed out when we're done. |
