Here are pictures of my XB9R's derby cover after one (1) week of Mobil 1 75/90w gear lube in it.

\image

This stuff looks like paste or Elmers glue.

I'm sure it's from condensation, but the SportTrans never did anything like this.

I figured I'd try it and see. Now I have, and I'm going back to SportTrans in the Primary.

I didn't shift any better with the 75/90, plus it stinks like a differential in my shed.

Best Regards,
Jody S.

After riding my XB back from Deal's gap in a full day downpour, I had a lot of moisture in the primary trans oil (HD Sport Trans). Turned light brown. Had to keep flushing it out for about a week. I can't figure how the heck it got in there, unless it was just absorbed from the 110% H2O saturated air I was riding in. Anybody have any ideas on how to prevent this when riding in extremely wet conditions?

I'm not sure how the tranny is vented on the XB, but the vent on my X1 is under my seat, right on top of the oil tank. After washing it one day, I realized that I was shooting water into the vent hose. Dumb fuck. Is the vent on yours in a place that water might get blown in while riding?

no space's... I'll have to remember that!

Sorry for the confusion folks.

I'm going to check out the tranny vent line this afternoon.

I'll post some more pics if I find anything.

Looks like mine after riding all day in the rain.
Did you see if your oil has turned light brown from the H2O? I looked at the routing of the trans breather line - it was tucked up on the side under the tail section bodywork near the seat. If any moisture were to get in the end of the hose, it would have run downhill into the tranny. So I re-routed it downward. The end of the line is now down by the fuel pump. Now any H2O would have to travel upward quite a way before it would be able to get into the gearbox (shouldn't happen). Hope that cures the problem.

It does look kinda gross doesn't it...?

I found the tranny vent hose coming out of the case just behind the rear cylinder.

Followed it up under the seat where it ends just under the rear brake master cylinder.

I blew into the hose (no, I don't have pics of that so don't ask...LOL) and find that there is evidently a valve or something at the other end of the hose. You can suck air out of the case, although it takes some effort, but you can't blow any air in.

Sorta like a PCV valve maybe?

Does this sound right?

I did find that the hose was kinda collapsed because of the sharp bend they have it routed around the starter. I pulled some slack in the hose to try and relieve some of the bend on the hose, but it didn't seem to make any difference in the effort it takes to pull air from the tranny case.

How water is getting in there is still a mystery to me.
