0430 comes too early, so I set the VCR, hooked up the video card and grabbed some frames for those that missed the show.

That is just too cool...

It, indeed, IS our Dave Gess, Erik Buell and Aaron Wilson's RS-1200.

Ahhhhhh...the ONLY bike at the Guggeneheim to be RIDDEN cross country into the exhibit!

COOL !

(Steve: E-mail me a screenshot of Ultan, I think I can use it as blackmail to scam a free dinner :) )

Court, Ultan? Man, I wish I had your Dictionary.
I copied the RS here. Sorry about the quality,
I can probably do something better if that's it.

Missed you in the crowd at Rockefeller Center, that was just on NBC,
but I did see Sheryl!

Another early morning and these folks are calling for some real snow,
so off to dreamland for the night.

Sorry...Ultan Guilfoyle, the Guggenheim Curator who was wearing the black shirt and spoke with the Irish accent.

Hey...was the show tonight great or what?

Too cool and what a tree, eh?

It was a great spot! The way it was edited, the Firebolt was the ultimate culmination of 150 years of motorcycling. Did I miss it, or did the V-Rod get snubbed?

(those shots of the firebolt dancing around corners have me wishing we weren't currently getting buried in snow)

Turnagain or anyone that has a copy of the video. Or if you can burn it to a cd as some kind of video file I can play on my PC.

Is there any way I can get one,

Please e-mail me with costs, I would love to see it.

Thanks,

Bill

Some of these shows are available from the producers of the films in a commercial format. You might be able to contact the History Channel (or maybe Mr. Gess will chime in here) about who to contact for a copy.

Post it here if anyone finds out a source and costing.

Court,

Now Lake is never going to get dinner from me... um er, I mean he will never be left alone because I am going to buy the video as my Christmas present to me....

Unless of course, someone else out there wants to buy it for me ...

Court, If you buy me the video and ship it to my work address I will leave you AND Vickie alone when I come to NYC... How about that for a deal?

Anyone have captions for those photos? WE beginners have no idea what the heck we are looking at... :(

Just finished watching it last night (had it taped).

Made me (literally) want to walk out to the garage and hug my Cyclone. I could not believe the amount of (relative) face time that Buells got (relative to the number of bikes made). I think I saw more Buells on that special then I have actually seen on the road in the last two years.

They did a great job... they really seemed to "get it". The "Manhattan Biker" interviews were a little goofy, and I kept wanting Court to show up somewhere amongst the leather clad Harley guys in his Aerostich and wheelieing his KLR-650 just to give some of the "not all bikers take themselves so seriously" perspective, but all in all it was a great show.

There were some notable snubs. The V-Rod (though they got an entire show previously), and the sportbikes as well. Seems to me the GSX-R1000 should have shown up there somewhere (though the 'busa did get a little camera time). BMW was largely ignored, as well as a lot of the other interesting european bikes.

They oughta do for motorcycles what they do with "Tales of the Gun"... Kind of a "Tales of the Motorcycle"... that would be some very interesting TV, and when put into a cultural context would have very broad appeal. My wife (who is not "into" motorcycles) enjoyed the special for just this reason.

TOP ROW LEFT: Guggenheim Museum - NYC (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) site of first "The Art of The Motorcycle" exhibit.

TOP ROW RIGHT: partial shot of George Barber's (I think, I'd have to check my notes) Blue Buell RS-1200.

SECOND ROW: Britten Motorcycle

THIRD ROW: Britten Motorcyle (left) / Erik Buell (right)

"a few more"

FOURTH ROW: Aaron Wilson's Red 1990 Buell RS-1200 / partial of a Buell XB

FIFTH ROW: LEFT: A fairly intense looking Erik Buell with the Buell Production Building in the background. RIGHT: Action shot of Buell XB

SIXTH ROW: Credits with a LONG OVERDUE reference to Dave Gess for his contribution.

Hope this helps,
Court

After seeing "Birth of the V-Rod" on Discovery, I e-mailed them to suggest they do a show on Buell.

Motorcycles seem to provide big ratings for these channels (I think many non-riders are just as interested or more interested than we are) and Erik's story would provide an absolutely fascinating two hours of programming.

I just watched it again last night. The most interesting part other than THE BRITTEN was the story of how the Honda Goldwing became what it is today because the manufacturer started to notice what their CUSTOMERS were doing to the bike (turning it into a full on Tourer) and following their lead. It also mentioned their CB750, the bike that literally CHANGED motorcycling the day it was introduced.

The VROD has got its own TV special as mentioned earlier. In term's of the whole motorcycle world it's not as significant as the Britten or the Buell's chassis design are.

It is very significant for Harley Davidson, but not for motorcycling in general, in terms of it's engine design, but it is significant for it's styling and new manufacturing methods like the hydroformed frame.

If you park a VRod next to a Firebolt somewhere, which will have the biggest crowd around it? The crowds I have seen were all around the VROD. Style wins most of the time.

One thing I've heard repeated on several venues is that one thing you will see WillieG doing at events is looking very closely at people's bikes. Several people have commented they've seen design concepts added to production bikes that were first seen on customer bikes.

I am trying as hard as I can.....I found a FEW things related to the S-1 intro and 3 TUBS (that's right, those plastic storage containers you buy at Home Depot) full of pictures, notes, sketches of a "new" tube frame and a handbook stamped CONFIDENTIAL for someting you'll be marveling over about 24-30 months hence.

What's this mean to you? I eat well and at least we have your stuff uncovered from the pile !

Thanks!

I'm thinkin' that might be one of those:
"If you're happy with what you have now then ride and be happy;
If you like the current line then buy and be happy;
If you think you'll be happy for the next 24-30+ months with what you have now or can have today then be happy;
But if you're not happy with what you have now, and want something slightly different than the current offerings, and can be content with waiting for two or so years, then wait and you'll be happy."

I'm thinkin' that I'm real tempted with the 9S as a squirrel bike, and what I have now I'm happy with, so in a few years (24-30 months to be exact) I may want to be situated for what's to come. Unless what may come sooner does come sooner then I may adjust the old plans a bit.

I think I just confused myself.
