Rocket, It's true that they have a shaft drive, but that didn't keep them from winning the Italian Supertwin Championship in 1996, beating the Ducatis. I wonder if that bike had a shaft drive? I also just read this month (I'll have to find the article) about a guy on a BMW R1100S winning his drag-racing class. Still, I do love my maintenance-free belt every time my friend John has to have a spline lube done (expensive) on one of his three BMWs! Here are a couple of pics from their web site of a four-valve-per-cylinder (Buell, are you listening?) bike that they intended to be run in Pro-Thunder here in the U.S. and one in traditional Moto-Guzzi colors.   "Pro-Thunder: born to race in the AMA championship, this bike has been projected to meet our American importer request. Same Supertwin 1100 frame, it mounts MOTO GUZZI 4 valves motor empowered to 1225 cc, 130 HP, OZ aluminium forged wheels and oil radiator mounted inside fairing. That Guzzi has dual front perimeter disks. That is unreal stopping power. Also lots of gyro effect, makes turn-in at high speed more difficult. Something tells me the Guzzi would be a pig in the tight stuff. Y'all like the red one with the even uglier than a stock Buell muffler? Eewwww! | ||

That engine and tranny look huge! The Buell drivetrain would seem like a paper weight compared to that. But, they are cool looking bikes. Probably easy to work on too. | ||

The Tuono is an awesome looking maching but so is the Falco and unfortunately, they haven't sold well. It sucks that the nekkid bikes we all love are a niche market. | ||

I don't know. The Tuono does absolutely nothing for me. It has wierd angular lines and looks like it's supposed to be "hi-tech" and "edgy"...too contrived. There's too much confusion in the design. My M2 looks organic and beautiful next to it. Now, the new Kawi Z1000, even with it's "edgy" design, talks to me more than the Tuono. Maybe it's the 4 exhaust pipes. But what's with the fake "frame" piece...really cheesy. I'm a sucker for mechanical honesty. I don't think I'm going back to a 4-cylinder anytime soon. IMHO, the XB9S is the best looking naked bike out there. It just looks awesome in person. | ||

Which goes to show it's all a very personal thing. I think of the models mentioned completely the opposite way... -wouldn't have to do with the fact I sell Tuonos-  Yet the model expected to be launched and will definately "mop the floor" with all of the aforementioned models, I guess, is the "Beast". I liked the look of the new Kwak, not that it's my kinda ride, but you know, Kwak have made the same mistake as Yamaha did with their naked R1. The bikini fairing is to far forward and far to low. Function over form me thinks ! Rocket | ||

Redstripe. I'm curious whether the limited edition Tuonos, the fully done up ones, were hot sellers, or easy to buy? I'd buy one if I could but I'm in Canada and can't get an Aprilia through the border, although someone is supposedly working on a dealership network. At last years bike show I was hoping to try out a TL1000 and a VTR for fit, side by side, and neither was represented here (Vancouver) because nobody on the west coast seems to buy either. Naked bikes just aren't desired except by us weirdos. | ||

Correct me if I'm wrong...but wasn't the whole streetfighter movement driven by hooligan bikers who wanted bare bones sportbikes that had the least possible amount of bodywork/expensive equipment to damage in the event of a get-off? Were the first streetfighters not bikes that got inexpensive crash makeovers? Most of the above bikes do not seem to fit the criteria. | ||

Well, Rick. In my case, I don't like the full race models 'cause at 6'6", my knees don't fit in the space provided. And at my age, my back doesn't fit with the posture provided, although the sporty brings me close, with the clip-ons and all. The cost of body work in a get-off is the least of my concerns. Haven't had one in twenty five years, hope not to for another. But there's usually bigger issues than body-work (for the bike). I'll concede that I'd be more reluctant to run the fancy-schmancy carbon-fibre bodied, really expensive bike on the the track, for fear of a get-off. And equally, I may buy the cheaper version for the same reason. But my main riding bud has CF bodywork and really expensive paint on his S1 and still rides like a nutbar. (Me too.) The naked thing is partly style, partly rationality (full-fairings become important over 100mph), and partly the ergonomics that come with it. (An RC51 with helibars may be adequate for me.) It seems to me that there is still a range within the naked-bike category, from the minimalist to the standards, to the stripped race-reps. My problem with Buells current modern offerings is the emphasis on weight reduction, which is fine for the minimalist thing but doesn't serve for the sport-touring and passenger niche, as the S2/3 did. I can see throwing some soft bags and a tent on a Tuono or a VTR. I don't know if that program would work on the XB. Both physically and power- to- weight-wise,(luggage included.) I guess the difference is street-fighter vs. naked bike, and I can't fit enough bikes in garage (in fact I don't have a garage) to be that focussed. |
