I don't like the looks of it very much, but I would love to ride it to see how much difference the muffler placement makes in the handling of the bike. Don't want to find out bad enough to buy it though:-) | ||

It doesn't make much sense to me (performance-wise). They spend countless hours getting the pipes engineered for optimal performance. I can't imagine that extending the header that far is good for performance. Just my $.02 BTW...it looks fugly! | ||

There is an S1 that's at Hals occasionaly that has the full airtech bodywork, with a side mounted exhaust like that. Doesn't look as goofy as that one, but still doesn't look right. | ||

one of the best things of my bike is when ppl say.."where's the exhaust?"... not to mention how bad A$# it looks when riding down a dirt or dusty road...u know..kinda makes a swirl like a landing helicopter does on dirt... i thought that one main reason ppl bought buells is to be of a different breed...it looks like all the jap bikes out there...eeewwww...but hey...who am i to judge...lol..prez | ||

A few possible benefits of a side mounted exhaust could be: 1. Lighter materials could be used for the muffler, as direct mounting to the frame could isolate it from some engine vibration. 2. The header could be re-routed so it wouldn't be exposed in a crash. However, of course, the muffler would be. But if the muffler was broke in a crash it would be eaiser to work on the side of the bike with a single pipe connection versus fiddling with the exhaust studs. I've always worried that crashing on the right side could ruin your whole weekend if it sheared an exhaust stud or two. 3. It would make access to under-engine maintenance (primary drive adjustment, transmission drain plug) easier. It does get away from Erik's mass centralization, but on the stock bike the muffler is very heavy. Something like a 12-14" long round carbon canister muffler would be much lighter. And, with the header pipes routed to move the junction rearward (Like the Supertrapp 2-1 for the 883R) the overall system could be much lighter. | ||

Kind of like this one, with the front pipe run right under the engine. Rear pipe could be an issue to protect, though.  | ||

Come on Ben, get some facts Our exhaust system is tremendously lighter than our competitors systems, and to top it off it is mass centralized! Ask folks who saw the demonstration at Homecoming. There are NO advantages to the side mount. |
