Despite downloading the free JPEG image optimizer from XAT I can't seem to get it to do anything except leave an icon sat on the desktop. That said XAT don't say their product is compatible with Apple. Does anyone know of a free JPEG optimizer suitable for Mac G3 iBook OS X 10.3.5 ? I've just purchased a Sony Ericsson 750i cell phone and the camera is the best I've seen on such a small phone. Pixels at 1632 x 1224 averages well over 200KB. 640 x 480 averages 150KB. Both these settings are too big for posting pic's to BadWeB. Please can anyone help? TIA Rocket ps, What an awesome camera phone! | ||

Rocket - Actually Image Optimizer is described on the first line of the down load page as: "The JPEG PNG GIF Optimizer for Windows® 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP" Therefore, it will not work on Mac OS X However, many of the functions in the program are already on your computer in the iPhoto program that comes with OSX. Basically you want to resize your images to 72 dpi and save them as low resolution .jpgs for web posting. Size should be about 3x5 inches. Birds suggestion is good too. | ||

You didn't get GraphicConverter with your OS X? I have it on both of my Powerbooks, and it came installed on there... How old is your iBook? Just curious. One of my PB's has Panther, the other has Tiger, but they both came with GraphicConverter on them. Sean | ||

Thanks fellas but no result yet! I saw the spec for XAT but tried it anyway - no go. Just over two years old and no Graphics Converter installed. iPhoto has an icon to click for cropping pic's but it doesn't allow me to enable it. Downloaded Graphic Converter (free trial I believe) and again it won't allow the use of the cropping tool. All I need is something to resize the bloody pic's from 350kb to BadWeB allowable size. Don't need no other fancy gimmicks and I don't want to pay for it. I dislike computers - always have. Rather rebuild a Buell any day  Rocket | ||

Rocket; just tried out iPhoto for the first time. The crop tool is grayed out, but your curser becomes an "X" when it's above the picture. If you click and drag a box on the picture, the crop tool becomes active. Hitting the crop button will then crop the picture according to the box you dragged. However, I can't seem to find a way to export/save as that will allow me to adjust the .jpg compression settings? Anyone else? Henrik | ||

Well, if you a want freeware photo editor, you're going to have to rummage through Versiontracker.com until you find something suitable... GraphicConverter is only $30 US, however, and if you plan on doing any more digital photography in future you will sure appreciate it... | ||

Just tried out Graphic Converter; not Photoshop Elements, but certainly tons cheaper  To crop, you drag a marquee on your image and from a menu select "Trim". That'll crop for you. If you use "Save a copy as..." you will retain the original image (always a good idea) and will get the option of saving at the size and .jpg compression of your choice. Hope this helps Henrik | ||

Henrik I sussed out the crop tool in iPhoto but like you couldn't figure a way to save the cropped image. That said, that's not what I want to do. I really would like to resize so I'm left with the whole of the original pic, just like XAT Image Optimizer does. Still not sussed the Graphic Converter either. I'm starting to believe the trial version is BS when it comes to resizing though. Scratching head???????????????????????? Rocket | ||

Rocket; if you just want to retain the image as is, and scale it down and compress further, then here's what you do: Somewhere there'll be a "resize image" command. That will allow you to change the pixel count. I usually stay within a 600 pixel square for images I post here. Then do a "Save as ..." which will bring up a dialog box where you can set the compression. A medium quality or a number around 5-6 should get you in the ballpark of the file size allowed here. let me know if this works out for you. As far as I can see, the trial version of GC is fully functional. Henrik |
