Buells Rule!
(Dyna in disguise)

Posted on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 11:22 am:   Edit Post Delete Post View Post/Check IP Print Post    Move Post (Custodian/Admin Only)

Love my new town..actually a village, love my new house, etc. But am in a real funk with the job. Is it just me or is it a result of the weather turning nice & having so many projects to do around the house that I would rather be anyplace but work?

Or maybe its the thoughts of just taking off on the bike & not coming back for a month or 4?

Just getting bored with the whole work concept, same ole same ole day in & day out. Been doing the same thing for almost 20 years now & I have no real sense of accomplishment or fulfillment. I think its time to give serious thought to a career change. Plenty of different work arenas in the Madison area, just need to get out there & explore them.

Guess my physical location right now.

Hint: I've been here an hour already (and nothing accomplished yet).

I know exactly what you mean Dyna.

Pretty much the same situation here. The new house is coming a long, the new town is nice, but the job isn't as different as I had hoped. I think that will change as some of my projects get rolling and I need to get out in the field more.

It's "Adult Onset Work Attention Deficit Disorder" The purchase of new motorcycles, boats, house...etc only makes the condition worse. Owning old motorcycles, boats, house....etc only makes the condition worse. Relocating to a new job only helps the condition for a short time period. The only known cures is to win a very large sum of money in the lottery. And yes, I too suffer from "AOWADD" It's Wednesday...time to go buy a Powerball ticket and hope for a cure to come my way. LOL

Dyna, Hmmmm, first no more track days and now a work funk.....sounds like you're having a mid life crisis. I'd recommend buying a few new toys to distract you from all that until the feelings pass...

Dyna, yup, been there, doing that now.
But starting vacation tomorrow, I wont be at work till July 15th : )

This morning, I had the alarm set for 3AM to get up early and finish up some lose ends at work before I leave. But just couldn't get my butt in gear. Didn't show up here untill 10AM : )

I also have FAR too many projects in the works. My 2nd story hallway has been gutted for months. I need to sheetrock that as soon as I get home. The roof *REALLY* needs to get done before snow flies.

I need to replace the wheel bearings, and the headstock bearings on the S3. Both bikes really need oil changes, etc...

And then the winter projects begin... Watch out Koz, I may steel your bling title away : )

After I posted my question, I felt guilty. So I dimensioned some of my prints to prep for machining. Of course, I picked the smallest, most detailed part. All the dims hardly fit on the sheet.

My supervisor's one cubicle over, maybe I can finally get that meeting with him he's been postponing since Friday.

i'm not at all surprised. when you figure that you're a bit younger than me, and yet you've already raised a family and are now enjoying grandkids, it seems logical that you should feel
a work funk.
if you weren't a motorcycle enthusiast i could see you plodding along at the 2-decade jobbiddy-job w/a dull smile. this isn't the case, however, as you're clearly a sportbike rider and dig some excitement. your family life is clearly fulfilling, and you're enjoying a new home.
your hobbies are exciting enough, so...
somethin's gotta give...
the job
you and me are polar opposites in terms of lifestyle. i have no house, no car, no kids, no wife, i spent most of my adult career in winter sports, living in various geusthouses and when summer came, renting little scheisse-pits and doing menial labour.
i have naught to show for it all, save for two horribly over-operated on, albe'em bad, knees.
heck, i just took a job bartending/bar managing (it's a tiny, tiny dewdrop) for a quick lifestyle changeup pitch.
everything in your life sounds dead-nuts ON, except your job, which sounds boring as H-E double Hockey stix.
take dave S. up on his offer, sell buells.
maybe on the other site, you could start really making a huge push for sponsorship, to a point where IT's a fulltime gig.
i mean- the dive i'm busting my kiester at has been a horrific money-pit for the owners, and i'm getting a charge outta ignoring that fact, and focusing on simplicity for better #$.
sound slike you need more of a self-actualized income style.
from what i know of your printed wit and wisdom, i would allow you'd do exceptionally well with it. i guess what i'm saying is: What took ya so long?

"Got a spot on the top of my head, begging for a new toupee
And a tire on my gut from sitting on my
But they're never gonna go away
Sometimes I get this crazy dream
That I just drive off in my car
But you can travel on ten thousand miles and still stay where you are"
Harry Chapin's WOLD lyrics

You're just coming down from the moving/new job excitement, it'll pass.

I've moved plenty of times and always get the same thing.

Dyna,
You need to go pick up the latest Tommy Castro CD and give the following tune a listen.
It'll make you smile and maybe cry, in either case a great tune.

What You Going To Do Now - Tommy Castro - Soul Shaker CD

You're tired of carrying around those same old dreams
Beginning to have your doubts about a lot of things
You're trying hard to understand what happened to your best layed plans
And boy you gotta long way to go to figure it out.

What ya gonna do now.
Now that the party's over
Now that you're getting older
Don't you wonder what it's all about?

What ya gonna do now.
Forget all about what you should have done.
The best just might yet to come.
What cha gonna do now.

You're looking all around for some kind of clue.
You might be breaking down but you might be breaking through.
Are you playing this game to win or lose.
Are you doing the best that you can do.
You're trying to find yourself in the lost and found.

What ya gonna do now.
Now that the party's over
Now that you're getting older
Don't you wonder what it's all about?

What ya gonna do now.
Forget all about what you should have done.
The best just might yet to come.
What cha gonna do now.

Oh baby what ya gonna do now.

What ya gonna do baby

What you gonna do now.

Talking bout now now now now now now!

Never give up.
If I get planted before my time I plan to dig my way back out.

Hang in there Greg, it's just the Springtime duldrums. You've got a nice house with fancy stairs and a huge garage. I can easily see you starting up some venture and making a go of it, you're in a prime location for it.

from today forward, every day in 2005 will be shorter than the last.
springtime is past us, both figuratively and otherwise.
greg- get a new job, start a new small business, do it now while you're young rather than regret it when you're twice this age.
you are clearly intelligent and strong enough to do it.
happiness first, any one of us could get mangled by a truck, tomorrow.
if we're gonna qoute lyrics, well... fine:
"..woke up this morning
got ma-self a beer
the future's uncertain
the end is always near..."

Steve, I am curious, it looks to me like you guys use Solidworks. I too use solidworks, i am also up for my performance review next week and was told that i need to figure out what it is that i think i should be making as far as salary. right now it looks as if i am about 2 bucks per hour underpaid compaired to the mean wage of people in my area. My question is do you know about what people make in your area with about 4 years solidworks and drafting experience.

no i am not asking what you make but a good range would be nice.

Jeremyh, No we use VX ( www.vx.com ) and Delcam PowerShape/PowerMill ( www.delcam.com ) VX is similar to Solidworks, but *MUCH* better at free form/organic surfacing. What Solidworks jockeys make these days is beyond me, and my wages are probably a tad higher than your average solidworks dude. Since my job title is a bit blurry, and I wear so many hats. My main job is mold design. But I also do a serious amount of 3D toolpathing for CNC machines, help assemble jobs, creat EDM electrodes, help with tooling decisions, I'm their one and only IT guy, help quote jobs, etc...

My Son got me a t-shirt for father's day that was quite fitting. It said "Let me drop what I'm doing, and work on *YOUR* problem" : )

That's why the move to Arizona is going ahead. Not only is work becoming a bit boring, sorry to say, so is the Mid West. Need a change. Won't happen over night, but we're planning in the next 6 months.

I'm currently using SolidWorks on the project I'm on. I make $45 an hour, but I'm 42 and have 20 years of CAD experience and 10 years in manufacturing plants.

I love my job.

salary.com is a good place for salary checks, or just google your job description and "average salary" and see what happens.

Love my job tho I wish it were a little more challenging. Maybe when the market rebounds I can go back to consulting.

If yer not Erik why are bothering with anonymous?

Because it would be poor form to put a name to a salary.

Why don't you tell us how much you make, Josh?.

I have 20+ years of CAD experience as well, but don't make anywhere close to $45/hour, not even with overtime. Must be nice.

(Part of the reason I'm sidestepping into a new field.)
