I just got a 97' S-1 about a month ago and its been sitting in the basement cause of the weather. I noticed that behind the oil filter where the crankcase halves meet there is a spot of liquid. I wiped it away when I first got the bike but have noticed a spot on the floor underneath where it seems to have drippped down somehow. Is this something that I should be concerned about? I have read elsewhere that the crankcase bolts sometime loosen and need to be torqued back down. I hope I didnt get taken to the bank. The guy that sold me the bike said it had been sittin for about 8 months. Please tell me it's not something major!!! | ||

If you have the manual, you could always retorque the bolts just to be on the safe side. | ||

Nemster, I have had my '97 S1 for a year now and know exactly what your talking about, mine does it too. The case seems to weep a little bit, but I have noticed its not as bad if I am riding it regularly. Wycked is right you can pull the service manual from the knowledge vault and check the torque specs for the case bolts. Heres a link the proper section: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/Manuals/S1_1996-1997_Service/BU3c.pdf Looking at fig. 3-65 on page 11 #2 should be torqued to between 15-18 foot lbs; #3 should be torqued to between 70-110 Inch lbs; #4 should be torqued to between 30-33 Foot Lbs. | ||

Sometimes leaking rocker boxes (pretty much a universal problem on tubers) will work oil down there subtly. Clean it up carefully, and watch where it comes from. It's easy to get fooled. | ||
