Looking at buying a 98 S3 I’ve been wanting one for a while and found one 3500 miles on it, it’s got some small cosmetic issues but looks good from the pictures he sent. So is $ 3200 a stretch, or is it it’s worth what it is to the buyer ? | ||

Sounds like a decent starting price for him, maybe offer $3k cash, maybe he’ll take it…the tube frame market is all over the place, but appears to be going up a tick. I bought a 2000 x1 with 12k miles for under $2k…. 3500 miles is a near brand new bike! I’d jump on it! | ||

I think that extra $200 is built in haggling room. When I list things for sale I typically think of nice round numbers I'd like for them, then make it slightly higher assuming someone will make an offer and it'll come out to the price we're both happy with. That's what $3200 sounds like to me. As far as your question, yes $3000 is a fair deal for a bike with that low of miles if it's still in reasonable shape. If you're shopping in a certain price range, keep in mind 25 year old bikes always cost you more than you paid for them. Unless you luck into an owner that's really kept up on maintenance and has done all of the random upgrades like the bronze oil pump gear and the newer style isolators... you'll end up spending a good bit more on random parts. In an effort to save some cash for something we were trying to buy, I sold my Speed Triple and bought the S1 for less than half the price. In the past few years I've thrown way more money at this bike than I saved by swapping them. The S1 is more fun than the triple was anyway. | ||

Keep in mind, other than most engine parts which can be crossed referenced with a sporty of the same year, and a few other odds and ends that were sourced from still existing companies (showa, etc) parts are near unabtainium to get and at a premium when they are. beat up used exhausts are selling for double or more than when they were new. A Buell has always been a great "second" bike to have.... | ||

I definitely agree to the second bike comment. Someday when I've got the money for another main bike, the Buell will get cleaned up and used more sporadically. I've been using it as a daily commuter for the past 5 years though, and even if it's not ideally suited for that, it's done well and has been super reliable. It works but it wouldn't have been my pick as an only bike, but they're getting harder to find and I keep getting older, so I went for it. | ||

It will be a second bike to my M2 . I’ve wanted an S3 for some time . I’m getting up in age , and am figuring if I don’t get one now, possibly won’t be able to get one in this good of shape . That being said , the PO traded the seller for work. He had it listed for $3800 , I said $3000 , $ 3200 was his comeback. The other problem is, it’s in Tennessee and I’m in Pennsylvania . | ||

That's how I felt, better buy one now before time keeps passing and I just never get the bike I've always wanted. I'm in Pittsburgh and I bought my bike from someone in NC. He was motivated to sell though so we both drove half way and met in the middle, so it wasn't horrible. | ||

Low mileage is good in theory, but if it's been sitting for 2 decades... there's a lot that's gonna need replacing. | ||

Personally, My '98 S3 is the favorite of my stable, and is the one bike that always seems to be running to shag parts for something else. If I ever get down to just one...that will be the one. She cost a bit less than the asking price for then you are considering but I think that almost all tubers are undervalued for the motorcycle they actually are.
