I agree carbs make life easy. FI is nice on a cold morning when you just want to hit a starter and go, but if you're willing to deal with the warm up procedure on a carbed bike, they're nice if you're rather pull out some wrenches instead of a computer to fix things.

bikers are getting soft and lazy. it all began with the electric start. i love two cylinders and one carb and i lament the loss of the kick. carbs are simple, easy and i can decide when i want the bike to idle-up and down et... when i start-up the Cyclone, i like to idle it down just before engaging 1st gear so that it doesn't grind. i then reach over with my right hand and pull the enricher out again.

The only reason it's tougher on the Buell is because of how much it shakes. On other bikes I would start it with the choke on, then start putting on my helmet/jacket/gloves while it warms up for a minute. With this bike I have to get all of my gear on, then start it when I'm on it so it doesn't roll back across my driveway. For my neighbors benefit, I tend to hit the starter and just pull away anyway. Nobody wants to listen to this thing at 7am. Going to swap to the stock exhaust this spring though, so it might actually be quiet enough to let it run for a minute before I take off.

My supermoto was kickstart only. I enjoyed the simplicity, and it pretty much always started on the 1st or 2nd kick, but if it wanted to act up, it always did it in the middle of a crowded parking lot and I was left jumping around on the thing for 5 minutes looking like I was nuts, so sometimes it's nice to have the electric starter haha. Plus that bike was only 426cc... I'm sure it's a different story trying to kickstart 1200cc to life.

true but on the up-side, it kept a lot of candyasses and women off of motorcycles. if you can't kick it you shouldn't ride it.

I guess you lost me on that one. Sounds like a slogan you'd see on a brain bucket of someone in one of those motorcycle gangs where they all have matching outfits.

I've talked a couple girls into buying their own bikes and taught them how to ride. Mark me down in the 'happy to see anyone on a bike' category.

generally speaking, women should NOT ride motorcycles.... when i was a kid, i was constantly taking apart my Schwinn Stingray, adding gears, changing bars, changing brakes, painting, changing tires et...then i'd go out and see how long i could wheelie. when i added a 5sp i rode my bike with no back brakes. to stop fast i'd just slide the back-end around. we'd take our bikes on trails and hills and go fricking nuts. this builds a foundation of understanding about how mechanical gizmos work and it makes one a much safer rider... the girls weren't interested in this kind of stuff AT ALL. now the harley craze hits and they want to ride an 800lb motorcycle on a very dangerous roadway. it's a prescription for disaster.

My AMA national record holding wife would not agree with you. She says bring your candyass to the Bonneville salt Flats and show her what you can do. The record is 167.4 mph in the MPG 1350cc class if you are so inclined.

i said: "generally speaking". there are always exceptions and clearly your wife is one BUT, riding a motorcycle in a straight line, fast, is not the same as riding on the roadway. i'll say it again:

GENERALLY SPEAKING WOMEN SHOULD NOT RIDE MOTORCYCLES.

my dad told me one day: "women know two things about cars: step on the gas, car goes. step on the brake car stops. they don't know how this happens and don't care to know. same with bikes.

i'm a firm believer in the the division of labor. guys outside, women in the kitchen!

ok, on a much more important note: i got the lightning to thump with starting fluid. i ordered a fuel pump yesterday and that should arrive soon. THEN, this loud, stinky, vibrating beast will be on-the-road.

Does Susan Wilson’s record still stand? If I recall she stole the fabled Don’s Speed Shop record.

Of course, in fairness, I think she had a pretty impressive Corvette racing background also.

My better half .... in the “struggling years” transported both her small sons (you know the one who’s been in 61 movies) around Manhattan on a 125cc Honda.

She’d take you to task also.

Also .... in the “better years” .... flew her own Falcon Fan Jet.

My mother is an excellent cook, but I make a mean tortilla. Mean like awesome, not average (yes, I know there's a difference between average and mean). Don't kick me out of my kitchen, bro!

My eldest daughter is smart as a whip. Very analytical mind. Does calculus in her sleep, and math is not her best subject. She doesn't know or care how her car works. I blame the auto companies. Cars rarely break these days, so why waste time learning what makes them tick? "Back in my day" I used to have to carry around spare parts to stay on the road. Now...not so much. I don't even change my own oil any more (in my car).

"I'm guessing you are single."

Or he's married to one of those women with the permanent deer-in-headlights/don't-hit-me look on her face.

Glad other people on here consider their wives and daughters to be fully legitimate human beings, and not just some second thought creation made from the rib of a man to keep us company and make us sandwiches. I come here to talk about motorcycles, and on the rare occasion that someone comes here to start trying to trash-talk people, it's always good to see people here squash it so we can get back to motorcycles.

Men who can't cook have to eat second rate food at higher prices. Thankfully TV dinners have come a long way since 1970.}

Court,
Susans record in that class still stands in the SCTA records but my wife was actually faaster. The difference is we only race in the AMA sanctioned events so there are 2 different sets of records.

LOL yeah, inexperienced (and experienced) people have get-offs all the time. It's not the sole domain of the women folk. Some of those were pretty funny.

Are there more inexperienced females out there than males? Sure. But that's a function of interest, not ability.

So. Most women shouldn't ride. I'd say most women, like most men, need to be properly taught to ride before setting them off on their own on a bike powerful enough to do roll-on wheelies, remembering that an accelerating motorcycle tends to make the inexperienced rider roll on the throttle when they try to hang on. The results are predictable. And youtube worthy. : )

generally speaking, women should NOT ride motorcycles.

While that is hardly a simple truth nowadays, you have every right to promote ideas from the previous millennium.

It didn't take long for this thread to go off the rails.
I had a niece and nephew who attended Columbine way back when all this madness started.
We used to smoke pot and screw around, these kids get to wonder if they're going to be mowed down by a psycho.
I'd be marching, too.

And now, back to your dead bike...

A dearth of women riding motorcycles is, as I said earlier, a matter of interest, not innate ability. For every video you find of women crashing bikes, I can find one, if not more, of men crashing bikes. I do agree that most women should not ride motorcycles, but it’s only because a lack of interest in riding has resulted in most women not knowing how to ride a motorcycle. That doesn’t mean they cannot learn or shouldn’t learn. But, at some point in your life, you’re just past the point of learning. Hell, I don’t ride all that much anymore; I hurt all over most of the time as it is. I can’t imagine starting out at my age.

---I do agree that most women should not ride motorcycles, but it’s only because a lack of interest in riding has resulted in most women not knowing how to ride a motorcycle.---

they aren't interested so they don't learn about them as did we guys, by buying P'sos, taking them apart, fixing them and then riding them. being interested is all part of the male mind and why we do things differently from women. it's called GENDER and the liberals are trying to pretend it doesn't exist.

---We used to smoke pot and screw around, these kids get to wonder if they're going to be mowed down by a psycho. ---

same here. we grew up in a much better time. what has changed? a lot! movies are more violent. video games SUPER VIOLENT. the recurring thread among almost all of these shooters is that they were forced to take mind-altering prescription poison. oh, and violent rap music. and The Drug War and much more...

---And now, back to your dead bike...---

i tried to get back to that but some politically correct folks gave me hell for stating the obvious.

so.... the bike is NO LONGER DEAD. as i posted far above: i fixed the wires and gooped the harness up with silicone, installed the battery (that i thought was totally dead but came back with a desulfating trickle-charge) and got the yellow beast to thump with starting fluid. i ordered a cheap fuel pump from ebay. the same pump is used on older lincoln towncars. lol... (ya gotta love that) and as soon as it comes i'll get it installed and this bike will run. it will be interesting to see if the dogs on 2nd gear are worn as they are on my Cyclone.
