Well, I have to have my cases replaced on my S3T. Several years ago the primary chain tensioner failed, resulting in carnage inside the lower end. It was repaired as best as possible, but the main bearings started leaking and some noises started again in the primary area, so I got some cases and am waiting for the work to be done (not enough time to do it myself right now). I am also having the oil pump gear replaced with the newer version.

So my question is: What else should I be taking care of while the engine is out and torn apart? I had planned on a thorough cleaning as well.

So, Suggestions? (thanks in advance!)

Give it a 1250 kit from NRHS. They will gap the rings for you and provide you with a Cometic gasket set for the top end.

No 1250 for me yet. Need to finish my sportster repaint project first (per the finance minister).

2000 S3T with ~20k miles on it (jeez I can't even remember how many miles since I always have the trip meter set). Might be closer to 30k. I'll have to check tomorrow.

Ok, I believe they upgraded to the new style lifter anti-rotation pin in 2000, but if you do have the old style I would upgrade while it is apart.

If you haven't already, put the new style oil pump drive gear in and the stronger primary chain tensioner.

Andrews N6 cams too if it is in the budget!

I'll double check the anti-rotation pin.
Already updated the primary chain tensioner, but not soon enough to prevent carnage (and the reason the bike is in the shop to have the cases replaced).
New oil pump gear has already been delivered.
Funny, I used to have the N6 cams in my sportster and replaced them with Woods Cams W8's which opened up my Stroker motor's full torque potential. Ended up selling the N6's several years ago...

Had to read up what they actually do. Not sure I would need them, but a couple of searches turned up nothing for my bike (but readily available for my '95 sportster).

If it has been a while, now would seem to be the time to remove the steering stem and the swing arm and clean/inspect/relube the bearings.

the windage tray and scraper would be a waste of money IMO. Brings nothing to the table unless you do a lot of sustained 5,000+ rpms.

Get yourself a new oil pump for a 2007 and newer sportster is what I recommend. Much better scavenging than your current pump.

Since you also have somewhere around 30,000 miles I would also recommend new rings at a minimum. I sell those for $32 a cylinder if needed.

An NRHS 1250 kit and a good valve job to your cylinder heads would probably show you around a 8-12 hp gain over what your bike was making before you tore it down. It's amazing how much power they lose as they go over 25,000 miles.

While the heads are off would be a great time to re-paint them. Factory paint peels after a few years.

Rings are cheaper than gasket sets, it makes no sense to have it apart and put the old ones back in.

The paint on my engine is pretty much perfect. I have not seen any peeling or other chips.

I am pretty sure the rings are getting replaced. I was going through a little oil over the last year, so we are still looking for the cause. Never really smelled anything burning, but I'm always in front of the pipe...

Didn't realize the cost of the 1240 kit was so cheap. I am now considering that, but will have to sacrifice something on my sportster rebuild.

Is the Sportster a compatible-year 883? It could benefit from your old cylinders, pistons, and new rings.

Anything from the Buell would be a downgrade to my sporster.

1995 XL1200 with an S&S 89" Stroker kit, flowed thunderstorm heads and Woods W8S cams. 96hp 101tq (hope to increase those numbers by at least 5 with a new carb and proper tuning). Only tore it down to paint the chassis and engine so the cylinders and heads match.

...and to fix some electrical issues.

Sucks being without a motorcycle to ride.

Airbozo your sportster sounds good, what stroke is the 89"?
did the pistons loose there skirts?
I have owned S&S stroker big twins in the past good torque does it vibrate much when rev's go up? also is the motor taller?

4 5/8" Stroke, with S&S 92-1941 pistons designed for the stroker crank and stock heads.

The vibration is not bad, but you can tell there is something different. There does seem to be a sweet spot. The top end is noisy, but I understand that is normal. I parked it when I bought my S3T and am just now having the funds to finish it.

Yes, the engine is taller and I had to modify my frame a bit to fit it back in. Might have gone a different route if I knew that ahead of time. Really happy with it though. The torque is amazing.

I have few problems to work out, including valve cover clearance and tuning it for pump gas.

The S3T is too tall for the SO, so she is looking forward to what she lovingly calls the "Franken-Sporty" being back on the road.

Then I get to look for bike #3...

Airbozo, yes the big motors have lots more Toque & make hp quicker.
am thinking of stroke & big bore my M2also do gear box & late oil pump. i like to get to drags once in a while to bracket race also ride twisty mountain roads on coast. i've got a cv44 woods Rebel 43.5 works good & would be goos with the extra inchs
