Well, that blows... Rode the S1 for a short ride, about an hour from home to go watch my daughter at one of her horse shows on sunday. Cruised up there no problems as usual, at a nice cruising speed of about 75-80 mph without a hiccup. stayed there for maybe 2 hours, then headed to head back home for some other previous engagements... needless to say i didnt make it to them. made it a handful of blocks from the show, went to leave a stop sign, easing the clutch out and BANG... backfire and dead. coast to the side of the road, hit the starter and cranks over fine... finally fires up and just keeps backfiring like some kind of ignition problem. pull the plug wire of the front cylinder and the popping stops but bike stays running the same. put it back on, bike starts popping again. pull the back wire and bike dies instantly... ugh. Limp it to the closest store(dollar general) and buy a pliers. pull the plugs, crank it over... no compression on the front cylinder..  AAAnnnnndddd of course since both my parents live close by where I'm at, it would be expected that my Dad and stepmom are gone to the wisconsin house, and my Mom and stepdad left their phones in the truck while they worked in their lake... AAAAnnnndddd My fiance is an hour south of our place(im an hour north) at her son's basketball games... as well as the few friends in the area being gone or unable to get away... SSSSooooo, i sat at dollar general for about 4 hours waiting... While im waiting some lady flies into the parking lot and decides to park like this while im standing right there. the parking lot is empty besides us...  it did not go smoothly. BUT, a different lady over heard me on the phone trying to figure out a way home, and brought me out a big bottle of water from the store when she came back out. That was pretty nice of her! My Mom finally went back to the truck and noticed they both had a couple calls from me... so they came and picked me up and took me to supper while we waited for Jenn to come rescue me with one of my trucks(luckily some other firneds were willing to pick up her son and bring him home from a work meeting after basketball or it would have been another hour or 2)  tore into it a little bit yesterday but still havent seen whats wrong(only down to having the rocker box off)     (Message edited by no_rice on June 07, 2016) | ||

we will see what i find when i get a chance to dig a little deeper. i just picked up(as in about 15 min ago while standing here at work) a 2004 xb12s in pieces because the cams seized in the case, and it was more then the bike is worth to build a whole new motor(i can still get new cases...!) that bike has some accessory goodies on it also... but the reason i mention it, is because it also still has a good set of heads... which i could sure put on the s1 while its apart, maybe with a 1250 kit or an 88-90" kit or something...(although besides a new front motor mount, i have to figure out what else is needed to run the xb heads) and if im going that far i may as well pull the motor and strip the frame and powdercoat it nuke blue... and repaint the body a different color... and a complete repolish. as for the seat, this bike and i have done our far share of 6-700 mile days. I thought I'd try things again, must not have had the compression tester tight enough the first time. Got about 160 out of the back cylinder a few times. And about 30 from the front. No matter how many times I think I have top dead center on the front, I always get air out of the exhaust valve...(top dead center, stick in 5th gear and put the air nozzle in the spark plug hole... Do the same thing on the back and it will try to spin the back wheel.) I can position it so the intake doesn't seem to leak, or at least not as noticeably as the exhaust if it does, but can't seem to get the exhaust side to stop(on front cylinder). I know that's not a real refined way to check things, but I figured it may give me a better idea | ||

thanks, its alot prettier when its together... lol so... took the rockers off, then stuck the air nozzle back in the plug hole. nothing to hold open the valves and it still send a bunch of air out the exhaust valve... pulled the head...       obviously something went through the motor... what, i have no idea... didnt see anything missing when i took the air cleaner and carb off. i will have to double check again after work(was running late this morning after tearing it down farther) also need to double check the sparkplugs and make sure nothing is missing from one of them... now what to do... no real reason to tear the rear cylinder apart... so i suppose i try to get the valve and seat replaced(i assume the seat is damaged now also) maybe both valves and seats? i mean it had to come in also... although i dont "see" any damage to the intake valve currently. then emery cloth that little nick at the edge of the valve pocket on the head AND the piston and put it back together... really no reason to do the 1250 kit or xb heads when it can be fixed reasonably cheap(i think) | ||

Inspect the valve guide(s). Double check to make sure you do not have bent valve (even though they look ok). Sorry to hear about that. Good luck! | ||

definately check the valve seat and the valve itself to see if it is bent. I also would recommend you pull off your cam cover and check your pinion gear as those like to work themselves loose which can cause the keyway to get boogered up. | ||

  Well seat actually looks fine, but the valve is tweaked, which I was pretty positive of before i pulled the head off... Valve doesn't even have a mark on it except where it was bumping the valve seat. One of the techs that's been here forever, thinks the valve guide started to seize up and slowed the valve down. He kept looking at the guide and sliding/spinning the valve in it. Still doesn't explain the marks though. | ||

The valve could have stuck open, which would explain one of the two marks on the piston (the one in the edge of the cutout for the valve), but it doesn't explain the other one, on the flat part of the piston. Weird. | ||

The piston/valve strikes are easy to explain, but where did the little bit that caused it all come from? Been doing any carb work lately? I think you may want a new guide as well as a new valve. I'd check the seat with the new valve to see if it's good before replacing it. A little touch up is all that may be needed - those suckers are hard. Personally, I'd pop the rear head too. Just to make sure every thing is hunky dory and throw in some new valve seals. | ||

The exhaust valve guide looks like it may not be sitting at the correct depth (possibly backing out?). Can you provide a photo of the exhaust "valve spring side" to show guide protrusion? | ||

well there is crack, and then a discolored spot inside the guide that appears to be a hot spot... one the other side it seems to all look hunky dory and sits at the same height as the intake valve.   (Message edited by no_rice on June 08, 2016) | ||

Great looking S1, certainly puts my pile of greasy shit to shame. Crazy damage. Hope you can get her rolling again without too much $$$ or frustration. Definitely a bit of a head scratcher as to what actually happened. | ||
