i would go easy as it will break again, and could end up with the stud broken in the head - now your drilling |

I guess you didn't read my original post. The bolt had snapped in the head before the mount snapped. What I didn't mention was I was trying to get home from >600 miles away. Made it almost 500 miles before the mount broke. For the $38 that I paid for the kit shipped, I'll take my chances. (Message edited by damnut on August 20, 2015) |

the front head motor mount holes are weak on the older heads. years ago I broke the receiving end on the head, same side as your broken mount. The shop wanted to put a new one on, they didn't want the liability. The front isolator was ripped too. A new head and isolator, it has been great for last 10 years. The motor mount bolts to the head need to be better than grade 8. Keep looking if at first you can't find them. |

The kit that I bought has the bolts to go with it. |

Jim, make absolutely sure that head faying surfaces are flat and on the same plane. I'll be money the broken side is rockered top to bottom. The left side is probably too. These surfaces MUST be flat or you will have the problem again. Re the S2 mount, mine had the big and small bolts. I had to drill the small one out when I switched to TS heads. |

Thanks Brad, I'll look out for that. Maybe the order should be to bolt it to the head first then the isolator once I'm sure the head & mount surfaces are on the same plane? |

Three different mounts, an S2 mount (left), an X1 mount (right, which you can tell by the lack of an air box mount) and a billet mount (top). You can see a difference in one of the hole sizes between the S2 and later mounts. That support across the bottom is not suppose to matter since the head itself anchors each side, but I have never seen one of the webbed mounts break. The other notable difference is the fourth joint mount, not used on any S2 or S1 but on later S3s and all X1s, so if you need the joint mount then an early S1 mount is not an option.

Had not thought about welding onto the S2 mount. BluzM2 is right about the surface needing to mate well. There is also one other thing you can do to reduce the likely hood of breakage which is to install a Stenzel bar. The bar reduces the potential rocking stresses. Buellistic, I am assuming the cracks you see are in Ebutch's picture? I can't see them, but I may need glasses. Two of three mounts in my picture have never been used and the other has been bead blasted and has no cracks. |

4th tie rod rod mount. Front motor mout must have been replaced at some point. |

OLD SCHOOL: The more TIE BARS and ENGINE MOVEMENT RESTRICTORS the more vibration you will get ??? "i" can understand this on a RACE BIKE but not a street bike ... "YES", "i" understand our BUELL is our RACE BIKE !!! |

The tie bars are there to eliminate the lateral movement of the engine relative to the tube frame. I don't see how adding one more could add to the vibes unless it was binding. Also, please stop capitalizing words at random. It's rustling my jimmies. |

Can you counter sink the bolt holes and put XB head bolts in or would that weaken the mount ? |

"4th tie-bar first appeared in 99???" Yes, and only on the X1. The S3 has the hole for it, but no tie was installed at the factory. If my rusty memory serves. |

You could also buy a 3rd party brace for fitting between the front isolator and a tie bar connection. I had this thing in my hand and have been looking for the install doc that came with it. It was supposed to be an improvement, never used it however. The brace is a aluminium flatbar length approx. 30 cm x 4 cm wide with a slight bend in it. |
