Just browsing internet , and see several stories about BAD exhaust heat problems. Blistered legs, pants on fire in one case, not what you'd call good stories.
Is there a fix?

I was thinking of having them ceramic coated, having seen Jolly's pics.
I don't think that's going to make any difference, just cosmetics.

So what do you guys do?

ceramic coating will definitely bring the heat temps down off the header. Both my S1W and S2 have them done. Iam having a race header/silencer built for my S1W and will be sending it to Jet-Hot coatings for ceramic coating.

^^^^^^

What Jeff said!!!

I have all of mine done by "Jet-Hot" jet coating..... Very noticeable difference!!!

I highly recommend them!!

Good info, I thought it was mainly cosmetic.

Won't be Jet Hot, but there's a place not too far away that can do it.

So no blistered leg stories then?

I've never EVER had an issue with heat hurting my legs.

Maybe I should ride in shorts, so I can be like all the cool kids with their battle scars...

yeah, havn't ridden in shorts for probably 10 - 15 years...not sure why I quit, something must have made me change my mind though...

so the heat hasn't really been a problem for me either, but the ceramic coating is a noticeable difference....

but I've never had any of the issues mentioned above...

blisters must = riding in shorts, (and/or) bike too lean and using the exhaust header as a leg rest...

There's a heat shield on the exhaust for a reason. I can't imagine someone's pants catching fire with the shield in place.

Um...note the "baggy pants" comment.

If you dress like MC Hammer before you ride...this can happen. Pants that lay against ANY header - wrapped, bare, heat shield, Jet-Hot, doesn't matter - if the baggy pants are in contact with the hot metal long enough, they will catch fire.

Wear PROPER GEAR, however, and you won't have any issues. I've been on Buells since '99, not a single burn in hundreds of thousands of miles - S2, S1W, M2, XB, 1125, none of them have burned me. Ever.

Well where do you wear your MC Hammer pants if not on the bike?

You're just too strange. : )

I wrapped mine and noticed a difference in temp. You can get the wrap in many colors, going to redo mine this spring in white.

Just be aware that exhaust wrap is really meant to be out of the weather--- UV will kill it and it retains moisture against your header leading to some ugliness!

Wrap is 4 years old on my bike and no bum or crotch heat issues for me. I get more uncomfortable on my Guzzi from the cylinder head heat streaming over my legs.

It is proven that hot exhaust gases flow faster. Similar to the way a little back pressure helps smooth the gas flow through the exhaust.

The ceramic coating will help in reducing the external pipe temp. How much probably depends on who you ask, but it definitely won't make it worse.

The issues with moisture and pipe wrap were usually around cheap metal headers that were prone to rusting anyway so the wrap/moisture would accelerate the rusting. Seen the headers actually blow out in the rusted areas (on cars/trucks). Don't believe this is applicable to the stainless headers on the Buells, although I would expect staining.

I had a beautiful ceramic-coated Force exhaust that was wrapped. After 6,000 miles the rear primary snapped about 10" from the exhaust port. But Force exhausts are not known for their durability, so who knows what the actual cause was.

I hope everybody keeps in mind that they're dealing with motorcycles that are now basically 20 years old. There are no new spares left. Used spares mean that a motorcycle had to be parted out to supply them. Exhaust wraps, coatings and all this stuff are not reversible. I've seen nothing but bad stuff on this very forum about what the wrap does to both the finish and the metallurgy of the tubing (cracks). I'm going to stick with the factory heat shield, keep it clean and hope to heck I never need another header.

I'm with Greg on that. My stock header on my S2T cracked at the flange so I welded it back together because replacements aren't cheap!

Polished headers have a lower emissivity.

Like Jolly had stated, too lean.
The New HD's run very very hot as they come from factory, my friend re maped the tune on one, & motor ran a lot cooler too.
about jet hot coating, very nice, but i had chrome Harley pipes, dynoed the motor as used to also drag race the bike, then later same pipe had it jet hot coated dynoed but never saw a gain at all, i even done a timed dyno run to check if it made HP & TQ quicker than with chrome on pipe no different. think would show up on a V8 car motor but bike motors small so not much gain just looks nice keeps pipe from burning you.
