So I was bored the other night in my basement/shop and noticed that my buddy who bought a Monster 796 left a bunch of his parts at my house. So like any good friend, I took them.
Ever since I laid my gauges down and took my fly screen off, the front just felt a little un-finished to me. So when I saw the monster fly screen and held it up, I knew I could make it work.
Luckily I'm a Mechanical Engineer who is well versed in a 3D model program, and I also have a 3D printer on my desk at work. I think it came out really well. I might play around with the angle of the new fly screen a little but all in all its awesome. It fits the bike pretty well. Here are the pics.

Here are the mounting tabs I made up so the monster fly screen will mount to the stock buell fly screen tabs.

Here is the new gauge plate.

Here is the Monster fly screen with the adapters installed

Monster fly screen mounted on bike

Gauges mounted with the new fly screen

So there it is. What do you guys think? As a comparison, here is what it looked like before hand.

I think it is better than no fly screen but I still like the original Buell screen better.

Paint to match and it would be nice!
Just like the Triumph Speed Triple.
That is so so amazing you can print out your own mounts, that is way way cool.

The more I look at it the more I think some people do this stuff just to be different, and the result is always the same.

It's curved lines don't suit the angular lines of the Buell. It's too small above such a large headlamp. The area underneath is exposed and messy. Above all else its styling is completely out of kilter with the rest of the bike.

Clearly another BadWeB case of tits on a bull.

rocket how is it any different then on a monster? its the same size in the same position and you dont see anyone tearing into that bike? Either way i like it and it was free, and 100% reversible. And if the continued bashing of members bikes helps you sleep at night then by all means do what ever you want to do. Its not like myself or many other people on here value your opinion anyway.

opinions are like ... ....'. everybody has one. 3d printing is pretty darn cool! I think there may be some jealousy. looks like you are having fun, thats for sure! covering the instruments from the elements seems pretty thoughtful. is the product for the printer expensive?

3D printing is very fun. I am very fortunate to have access to one. The printer I use is the Makerbot replicator 2. And it wasnt that bad price wise (considering I didnt pay for it lol) the printer itself is about $2,500 which may be a little steep but the filament for it is very cheap. I would say the gauge plate and tabs cost about $2 to make.
As far as painting it goes, I would like to but technically its still my buddies and if he wants it back the blue would not match his flat black monster to well.
It was just a fun project to see if i could do it. who know how long I will keep it on there. but for now I like it.

rocket how is it any different then on a monster?

Perhaps because it suits the design and style of the Monster as Ducati intended.

Monster

its the same size in the same position and you dont see anyone tearing into that bike?

But it's not on the same bike is a big clue. The headlamp style and shape on the Monster should give you a clue. So should the superbly designed and styled Buell bikini fairing you don't have on your Buell.

Either way i like it and it was free, and 100% reversible.

Good. Perhaps you'll see sense then ; )

And if the continued bashing of members bikes helps you sleep at night then by all means do what ever you want to do.

Thank you. I will.

Its not like myself or many other people on here value your opinion anyway.

Really? Then let me correct your first post for you. "So there it is. What do you guys think, except Rocket?", and remind you of mine. You prefer that over the original?

funnily enough to me it doesn't look right on the monster, it doesn't sit right with that headlight. and don't get me started on the new 1200 monster, the ugliest of the lot, monsters used to be great looking bikes but each new generation just gets less appealing.

i agree with you somewhat as well there are some points on the monsters that i dont like either. that exhaust for example is horrid. i will say they handle quite nice though. i have also noticed that comfort goes out the window with every newer generation. every ducati seat i have felt whether it be the monster or the 848, the feel like slabs of granite.

I used to lust after monsters, back when they had metal tanks. Now the trellis and tank look like they're built out of duplos: http://bricker.ru/images/sets/2612_brickset.jpg

Then I rode an X1 and the rest is history ; )

Would be a dull topic if I'd not spoken up about how out of place that thing looks on a Buell. It only just works on the Monster. I'd have been more impressed by your efforts if you'd have put your Buell fairing on a Monster. That might work!

But hey don't take it so personal. I know what looks good and I'm happy to share it ; )

You know what looks good to YOU. That's your opinion which everyone is entitled to. I think the problem is you have to take a negative stance on almost EVERYTHING you comment on. Of course posters should know by now when they ask for opinions they should add a "except for rocket" clause.

There are many comments I've placed on BadWeB praising peoples Buells.

The problem we are seeing a great deal of now with tube Buells, in my opinion, is people can pick them up for next to nothing. The lack of value allows people to hack them up with little regard for the purity of the original bike.

I make no apology for being a purist to the design. It's why my own S1W despite many many modifications remains faithful to the original design.

Frankly I've little time for those that hack them about for the sake of trying to make them look different even when it means ugly.

Erik Buell never made an ugly tube frame Buell. Plenty of owners have!

I agree. But mike went through a lot of effort to keep everything stock (of course not the fly screen) but he put in extra effort not to hack it up. 4 bolts and he's back to stock. one of the things I love about Buell owners is the ingenuity. Like pur pony's seat loop among many many others. That is also something I hate about true Harley owners. There bikes look all the same maybe a little more chrome here or a little less chrome there. And I think the criticism is needed but maybe just some pointers like " hey that looks like horse shit but maybe if you move that down" or whatever it may be. I'm just saying. Eric got to where he is by trying different things.

God that Ducati looks horrible!

The original monster looks a lot nicer.

I agree the fairing does NOT look right on either bike.

When I look at bikes I apply the Wash Theory. How easy is it to keep clean!
You would have to clean that ugly Ducati with a toothbrush.

The S1 is a lovely bike with nice lines and not to cluttered making it easy to clean. Another bike I love is the Moto Guzzi MGS01 just beautifully simple flowing lines.

Less is More!

Rocket, I know you have been around a long time but just tone it down a little, people will respect you more.

If/when you ask for other people's opinion about something that is purely a matter of taste, then be prepared for criticism, sugarcoated or otherwise.

Hey rocket is there a pic of your bike somewhere on bad web? It says in your profile that it is heavily modified. I was just wondering what it looked like. Not to bash it or start an argument but it may help me to understand what your taste is. Not that it really matters what I think. But I just wanted to see "your side" of it.

I agree that everyone has there opinion and i have no problem with people not liking it. I guess what annoys me a little is how over the top rocket is. just seems unnecessary in most situations.
And although i may not be and ultimate purist i do respect and love the buell. If anyone has noticed, which i think a few have, my bike can go back to 100% factory in about 1 hour. Absolutely nothing that came on the bike stock was touched or altered in any way. I have never taken a welder or grinder to the bike. The stock fly screen and gauge plate are untouched and go back on it about 10 min. The rear subframe is also untouched and bolts right back on.
Since day 1 i thought the rear end of the x1 "squat" too much and was also too long. Making the bike not look aggressive at all. So i raised the stock tail and it looked better. then i always liked how the the rear tire stuck out further than the seat on the xb so i fabbed up a new rear end.
I also never cared for how high the stock fly screen was so i printed out new plates and brackets to lower it.
I also agree that rocket should post his bike so we can see how he thinks and modifies.

Fooking hell. Rocket does it on purpose.

What's the point in saying "hey dude that fairing on your bike looks cool but I don't like it if you don't mind me saying so".

Getting into it. Getting into one. It's what makes these topics vibrant. If you want my opinion toned down I'm not interested in giving it. It's just boring in that case. I want to enjoy the banter. Stir up emotion.

You don't have to take it personally. If you're a person of poor taste you'll still be loved Well maybe ; )
