Bought this 96 S1 in March for my next project since I was wrapping up the S2 complete rebuild.

It was a perfect purchase, the price was right, the motor was strong (fired right up when I went to look at), it was a close drive to go get it so no shipping pains, and I had a lot of stuff on "bench stock" for the cosmetic fixes.

Great bike, a first year S1. Finding one with the stock exhaust is rare these days, I would be sure to hang onto the stock parts. The exhaust and air cleaner may look like the later models, but they are unique to the 96. The air box is fiberglass on the 96 rather than plastic. The original fender was also painted carbon, and the 96 has a unique (and stronger) front motor mount. Nice find and great color. Mods look great to, especially like that air cleaner, I would hang onto the original pieces to go with the bike though.

Beautiful S1, the yellow color is growing on me more and more every time I see it. I especially like the contrast between the yellow and the gray frame and wheels. Schweet. I have the stock exhaust on my '97 S1 and love it. Seems to run better with the stock pipe than it did with the V&H too. Have fun with it!

the frame is a little rough and the wheels are true but peeling very badly, my plan was to powder-coat the frame and wheels white then run the red body work I have, but... kinda torn now...

may have to find another one of these and use the high voltage yellow AND the red, to go with the black on the s1W....

I may have a serious problem....

I'd keep the yellow/gray combo, and if you want to dress it up throw some PM's on it. The S1 - I have to agree with Court - is going to be one of the 'big ones' when tubers become true collectibles. It was (is) such a significant machine, and it has so many similarly significant components...originals, I think, will carry much more weight than modified bikes.

There are worse problems to have : )

yeah, at first the high voltage yellow was just going to be a temporary thing until I stripped the bike down... now Im really leaning towards leaving it, does anyone have a high voltage yellow fly screen "just sittin around" so that I can complete the full body work?

I guess Ill find a 97 S1 to build so that I can get the red body work off the shelf and do a white frame/wheel/red body work bike.... I don't have anything in the 1997 year anyway so might as well... that would complete the S1 collection, one from each year...(ouch)

so...anyone got a high voltage near perfect to perfect fly screen?

...anyone got a 97 S1 they want to sell extremely reasonably to see it go to a good home?..rough body rough paint rough frame is a good candidate..since it would be a frame off color change...in fact, keep the body, sell the bike, Ive got a perfect red body sitting on the shelf...

I hope you keep the bike in the high voltage yellow color. This, in my opinion, is the ultimate S1.

I have a couple S1Ws as well, but the HVY S1 is my favorite bike. Sex on 2 wheels.
