I have a Vance and Hines exhaust (non-carbon fiber) on my S1 and it's a bit loud for my tastes. I like the way it looks though. I have the original exhaust, but before installing the tractor muffler, is there a way to bring down some of the rasp of the V&H? New outlet/internals/packing etc? Thanks.

Yeah. Those V&H pipes need to be repacked from time to time or they actually buzz themselves apart!

So do I drill out the rivets and pull the core and the pack it with what? Fiberglass or something? Do I use house insulation fiberglass or something else?

You may also notice a slight bump in mid torque after the can is properly packed.

Thanks guys for the helpful info. Ok, but if I repack it any idea how much quieter it will be? My bike only has 6000 miles on it. Assuming this pipe's been on the whole time, how often does it need to be repacked? And rat I was thinking about steel wool. Do you think coarse or fine steel wool would be best? I was thinking coarse because it might absorb more exhaust gases. And how tight do you pack it in? Main objective is to get it as quiet as possible without resorting to the stock tractor muffler. And Buellistic what OEM mods are you talking about? I'm all "ears."

Simplest to buy a 'repack kit' from either American Sport Bike, or even V&H. There is the possibility of a 'DB killer' sound deadener insert on these I think.

I repacked my VH last winter hoping to quiet it down, but it didn't make a particularly dramatic difference.

I used the kit from american sportbike and had a hell of a time getting the fresh packing stuffed back in -- I suspect it was because the core was slightly off center. The elbow going into the can had a dent in it, so I think it was bent a little. I ended up drilling out the rivets on the front and using a broom to get the core to slot back in, as I slid it all back together.

The packing I removed looked pretty spent, so I was disappointed it didn't make a more noticeable difference.

Will be curious to hear how things turn out if you do a repack. (Or anything you do to improve the situation... My bike is still a bit loud for my taste)

Thanks for the advice everyone. The stove rope idea is cool, might try that some day. In the meantime, I removed the v&h today and installed the stock tractor muffler, which is in mint condition from never being used. The bike is much quieter, but not completely tamed. It actually sounds ok, although the muffler doesn't look as cool. The bike doesn't seem to have lost any power. In fact, it seems to have a stronger bottom end and midrange. It also revs quickly. I kept going up to redline without meaning too. The quieter engine sound makes it easy to underestimate actual rpm. Overall I'm pretty happy with the stock muffler. Would like a lighter and better looking muffler eventually, but for now? So far, so good with the tractor muffler.

You can't beat the stock muffler for performance.

It's just the looks and sound.....

Is there anything that's generally considered quieter than vh, but less bulky than stock?

I also find the stock can bulky, but the up side of it is that the bulk way down below makes for good turn in and stability. Not a bad trade-off if you ask me.

I don't come across too many Buells in one place at the same time to make a comparison.

I can tell you, my D&D is pretty loud so, I don't recommend them if you are looking for something quieter.

I know stock looks huge and it's heavy but, it does work to get the best performance and keeps things quiet.

Otherwise, it's ear plugs for anything else.

Yep, I religiously wear plugs for rides longer than 30 min. Wish there was a middle ground though.

@S1owner, does the white bros attach to the front hanger or just in the rear?

Has anyone heard a torque hammer w the silencer in? They're a bit pricey, but nice that they're still in production: http://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/artikelen.asp?cid=18 &aid=181

What I'd like is something like a stock muffler, but titanium insides encased in a carbon fiber shell...

Buellistic I'd be interested in learning about OEM muffler mods. Any reason you can't post them in this thread so everyone can share? Sounds like quite a few people want something different then just the two extremes of pure V&H or bone stock.

There are two reasons "i" do not post my HELP "INFO":

After a time limit "i" can not UP-DATE or CHANGE in any way since "i" am not a monitor which gets lost in the windmills of this site ...

"SO", anyone who wants a copy of any "HELP INFO" that "i" have put together, just PM me for a copy ...

"AND" since "i" will have your e-mail address and check the site everyday and you are having a issue with something, "i" will just send you what ever HELP INFO that "i" may have on said issue ...
