My X1 won't start. It hints at starting, but won't hold idle and dies. I hear the primer go on, fresh battery, fresh plugs, engine light goes off after 4 seconds. When I pull the plugs they are not wet & don't smell like gas. Pump, filter, injectors? Is there an easy way for me to check the fuel pump pressure or do I need a tech to do it? How do I relieve the fuel pressure to change the filter? Bike has 10K on it. No indication of this coming on, ran fine right before. I have a napa part number for the filter, but who carries the pump or injectors if needed? Will ECMspy help me?

Have you checked your fuel pressure?

In no particular order:

There is a Schrader valve right where the fuel line comes out of the tank. Just push in on the center. Small 'spritz' and the pressure is relieved. Or, you can just pull the line off of the filter. The amount of fuel released is very small.

A lot of auto parts stores rent/loan special tools. A fuel pressure test kit should be available. Look for pressure in the 50psi range, though the service manual has the test done with a running engine.

Might also check for pressure/flow at the fuel rail.

Lots of threads on replacement fuel pumps. In any case, check with American Sport bike.

Is there enough fuel in the tank? Been there, done that. Is the tank vent plugged? Battery good? Throttle position sensor functioning? Does it need to be reset?

I'm guessing no Check Engine Light, so no trouble codes. ECMSpy may help, won't hurt.

Hope this helps, Dave

If your fuel pressure is not up to 50 psi, then it is probably your fuel pressure regulator. This exact thing happened to me. The regulator is a 40 dollar part. You do have to remove the fuel pump assembly to replace it.

Thanks. I bought a fuel pump pressure gauge and I'm reading ZERO. Am I too paranoid to think my new gauge is not working? Have nothing to test it on. Can't find a schrader valve on my 06' Super Glide. I did notice when putting on the gauge gas only dribbled out. I also relieved the schrader valve by hand after the test thinking that if the gas was pressurized it should spit out and my gauge is reading right. Only dribbles when I relieve it. I did have the ignition switch on and turned the bike on via the red kill switch. I hear the pump whirring. I oiled lightly the O-rings in the fittings as instructed with light household oil. The fittings seemed nice and snug. time to remove fuel pump?

Yep, seems pretty much like the time. One check you can do: unhook the fuel line, and put on a section of hose 12in long or longer, point it in a safe direction, and turn the ign and stop/run switch on. The pump should spray a stream. You will have to unhook the fuel line anyway . . .

Thanks for the tip, bought a new filter so I'd do that to satisfy my paranoia about the new tool

Ordered the fuel pump ($69) and regulator. The regulator is on sale for $34 at Surdyke H-D. Will HD have the rubber washers I will need and replacement strap?

OK I finally got the fuel pump ( and regulator. Is there a bench test I can do to make sure all is operating good? Can I use a electrical tie or hose clamp to replace the metal strap?

I wouldn't use a ty-rap to hold it down.

Most HDPE compounds don't hold up too well with gasoline/ethanol combo's.

well I connected my old fuel pump to a spare battery and it started spinning! guess that's the bench test and it was good. The regulator was loose and spun. this was replaced as well. Some of the o-rings looked worn on the regulator, I'm guessing gas was bleeding out past the regulator therefore not building pressure? At least I didn't pay for a complete pump setup. Now have a spare, lol! I best test the new one before install. you think HD has the fuel pump retaining strap (P0179.k)?

They might. Doesn't look like anything special, looks common enough.....How about a stainless steel hose clamp???

All done. Pump, regulator, fuel filter replaced. I probably saved like $500 if I would have dropped it off at the dealer. Test ride was good & no leaks. The bike had not been started in over a month. The pump was delayed 4 weeks.

More intel for those who would dig more power out of the engine... Especially if you did what I did and went to 1450cc's...

The pump: Walbro 521
a.k.a.
AC Delco - EP274
Delphi - 25337782 OR FE0052
Ford - E5ZZ-9A407-A
GM 25116975

The regulator(s);
Walbro 135-15 = 50 psi set (suggested replacement for stock)
Walbro 135-22 = 58 psi set
Walbro 135-24 = 43.5 psi set

And the folks who can build you a task specific Injector.... do the math to let them know what you expect for HP out of your engine (based on rail pressure, flow rate of the injector, # of cylinders)
