I was out riding my S3, got a huge oil leak coming from under the motor, looks like it was near the oil pump/lines. Oil everywhere, rear tire/rim/fender/swingarm. Lost about 1qt in 60 miles. Got it home, too much oil to find the leak, degreased it and washed it off. Dryed everything off, let it sit overnight. Topped oil tank off. Next morning,no oil on the ground? Started it, idled for 10 minutes, no oil leak?? Any ideas?? Guss I need to road test it?? Any help is appreciated. | ||

Check your primary. Follow the overflow line back up under the seat and make sure it isn't what overflowed. If your crank seal went out the engine oil will overfill the primary case and burp out through the overflow. The oil then goes everywhere. It could easily look like it came from under the motor. | ||

Finally got some time to chase down the leak. Essmjay, you were dead on, Oil leak was happening at the overflow on the oil tank. I'll take off the primary & clutch and I'm sure that I will find a bad crank seal. I'm going to change it myself. | ||

Remember that the clutch nut is left handed. | ||

You can stop by the hardly dealer and pick up an updated crank seal for a 2000 sportster. There are some good threads here on the procedure for changing it out. |
