I haven't been on for a couple of days, so I just read about the sideplate loaning thing...

As a backup to the backup to the backup -- I, too, have an original set of sideplates with original kickstand. Available if needed...

Side plates are here! thank you, that's step one! Ratbuell, shoot me a note, I need to know where to send these so that you can pull your plate and kickstand and send it to me. if you're worried about how long I will have it, the very next day that I receive it I will send to the machinist, he says he will need it only one day, then will return to me so that I can ensure its actually sent out, then send it direct to you!

I will quick turn this as fast as possible!

were getting closer!

Rex, No, I do not have the plate I need.

I have received a loaner left stock plate and kickstand I can send to someone to keep their bike upright while they loan me an upgraded plate.

I know of three people that have these, one possibly has his bike for sale and unsure about removing the plate,

One responded today (very nicely) that he simply is uncomfortable and therefore unwilling to loan his out,

And the third I know of might be completely wrapped up and busy with the holidays to be tracking this, of which I completely understand!

I have put a considerable amount if time and energy into resurrecting this part and will continue to do so for all of us, but, I'm going to need a little trust and some help from folks here to pull this off!!

I'm not doing this to "get rich" or make money, I'm investing my funds up front and an incredible amount if time so that we all can benefit.....

Help???

So I pose the question to anyone that has an upgraded left side plate...... What will it take from me to you for you to feel comfortable loaning me your plate to get this going?

Just following the progress, I wish I could help, Out of curiosity not owning an S2, what is the difference between the plate you have as a loaner and the one you are trying to borrow?

The S2s had a different kickstand design that was not great and can easily cause the bike to fall over on the left side. Years back someone made an aftermarket plate that adapted the S3 kickstand onto an S2. They are not very common.

Only a handful of the different plates were ever made as near as I can tell. they were developed for a guy at Gilbert HD and had a very low production run. Gilbert HD went out of business or closed the doors under that shop name over 3 years ago. limited production part envisioned by one guy who was passionate about his S2 and had the means to correct a serious issue. I only know of about three people that have the plates, but I am new to the S2 world but have been riding Buells since 99. the parts are no longer in production, nor have they been for YEARS! a very limited production run, never to be done again. I am trying resurrect this part for those of us with S2s since the passion for S2s has really been energized over the years.

I have a set of the upgraded S2 plates headed my way!

long story but I actually have three people willing to help with upgraded plates!

I actually spoke with Jim Gilbert who is the person that created these in the first place. the design comes from a combination of the stock S2 plates for the bolt pattern and a set of plates from an RR/RS that had a better kickstand design, he took both plates and a stainless steel kickstand that American Sport Bike used to sell, manufactured by PM performance (I think that's correct) into the machinist and had them merge the parts so that the better kickstand would fit on the S2 plates and he had a couple of sets made...(don't recall how many total sets).

long conversation and interesting story between that point and today...

It turns out that Jim actually has one set of plates sitting in a box in his garage and he knew exactly where they were!

He is going to mail them to me in the next few days to use and I will get them off to the machinist ASAP!

Rex also volunteered to loan me a set in case this does not work out for some reason, though he has to pull his plates off his bike at a time when he is extremely busy, but he was willing to help the cause!

Rex is going to be a solid 2nd back-up in case anything with Jim doesn't work out.

And...

Ratbuell has a left plate that he is wiling to loan out if the first two options were to fall through!

its been an incredible time vacuum to work through this but I am getting closer to resurrecting this part!

One of the benefits of this endeavor is the number of people that I have had a chance to talk to and get to know and trade a few stories with!

I still have no idea of cost but getting close to a solution!

I raise my glass to you Jolly for your efforts and determination in this endeavor. I know these plates won't be cheap, but I'll bet a good percentage of people spend about as much at Starbuck's every year.

yeah...

you know...OCD is a great asset in a cockpit....but can really somewhat bothersome in the real world...... I have to build more shelves in the garage to keep my Buell parts organized....its really getting crowded! I have already had to move my 77 vette to storage to make room...its tough to fit 11 bikes in a two car garage.

Although I feel much better after talking to Buelljunkie...... now that guy has a bunch of bikes!

just one of the great people I have gotten to know over the phone during this project!

the list of great people I have spoken with during this project has really grown!

here is a picture of a kickstand on a 1990 RS, it clearly shows a better kickstand design and is the genesis of the plate design that Jim Gilbert used to make the S2 plates. he bought a set of these, then took a set of S2 plates and a kick stand to a machinist and basically had them merged into the new S2 plate.

I will be working a small modification to the plate, two guys that have the plate have recommended a bumper stop when retracted that is not in the RS plate or the redesigned S2 plate. so as long as I am starting over here I am going to have the machinist work in a small design change if its possible. it may not have it due to a design limitation...but going to see what I can have done.

as soon as I get plates from Jim I will turn ship them to the machinist the very next day.

the holidays have shipping all screwed up though... It took 11 days to get me cam cover to NRHS instead of the advertised 2 day express..... Dan at NRHS did a fantastic job of helping me out and turning them that day and shipping the very next day..great guy and I can really recommend him for help on some of the upgrades to the motor. of course the sad part of the story, to ensure I had them Saturday I paid almost 50.00 in shipping and the post office did not deliver them since no one was home for signature....wtf?? oh well, I had an extra 50.00 sitting around anyway... OUCH! but it just adds to the story of the bike I guess......

As soon as I receive the plates from Jim which ensures I don't need the loaner stock plates I will ship those back to the owners... Need to hang on to them long enough to ensure I don't need to loan them out for temp replacements for upgraded plates.

yeah, it was a perfect example of how the part came into being designed in the first place by Jim gilbert. It shows that prior to the S2 there was a better kickstand design, then it got worse with the S2 and then better again with the subsequent models.

It does raise the question of should I have a set of plates designed that do not have the passenger peg mount.. keep it short like the one above for dedicated 1 up riders...

Ill have the plates from Jim tomorrow if the Post Office comes through, then Ill turn ship them to the machinist.
