What would you consider to be the normal range of oil consumption? I'm using a quart about every 600 miles. My bike has 10000 miles on it.

I probably use about that. But I have almost 40k miles on my bike. I suspect that I either need a valve job or new rings.

Overfilling can cause it, but also your crank seal could be shot. Are you losing oil from the tranny vent?

There's no leakage into the transmission. I'm thinking either the valve seals or the rings might be worn. I bought the bike used and I think it might have been rode hard.

Valve guide seal popped off, perhaps?
The trick is a little bit of Green Loctite when you install the new seal to keep it where it belongs.
