So, my rotor has always vibrated like CRAZY! I posted once before and the general consensus was there's not much I can do, Once they start to rattle you just deal with it. (99 x1 Lightning) However I noticed this and it has me concerned. The previous owner put these washer/bolts on to hold the rotor (not sure if they are actually what was suppose to be used or something he just improvised. But this HAS NOT been a problem till now. The washers are peeling away at the carrier. And there is considerable movement all around. All the photos show peeling around the washers and the carrier and the last one shows movement side to side, a pretty good amount. My rotor is in good shape but the carrier is pretty bad. Any recommendations on salvaging this or recommendations on where to buy a new rotor and carrier at a good price? Thanks for any leads!

That does not look right to me either. i don't think i have seen them that bad before...If there stock i mean. I would buy a good wave\scalloped rotor from americansportbike.com I have tried to re-surface these rotors and they are not the type of metal you can machine properly. |

You are about to have a catastrophic rotor carrier failure. I would not ride this bike again until you get a new / different rotor on it. This is a bad one! there is a check in the service manual for the allowed play I believe, check it out. Kevin |

I believe what you are seeing is the bolts wearing the carrier. I'm with the others, you are looking at a catastrophic failure in the making. Call Al at American Sport Bike and get one from him. Not necessarily inexpensive, but the best long term solution, IMO. |

essmjay, I seen these ones as well, I would love to support american sport bike as i have before, but the price is a little high for me at the moment, but I can swing the 150 for a stock rotor. I don't ride that hard and the stock rotor on there now is actually in good shape, just the carrier is tore. sooo...ebay it is. However, i have heard people talk about them rattling, is that part true that they do rattle? mine always has. but it has always been this set up. |

Those carriers/rotors were updated for 2000 and up. I think if you scored a 2001 or 2002 disk of ebay, you would probably be good to go. |

Indeed the update rotor and carrier, Just purchased one, hopefully it will be here Friday and I'll be back on the road. With at least 3 more months of riding here in WV it had to be done. Thanks. |

I KNOW that if you use the 2000-up Nissin 9 button rotor and carrier assembly (like in the eBay link) you will be good to go. Any OEM Buell 6 button front rotor and carrier ass'y I've tried on my S2 didn't last very long before rattling, 1313 |

If its held together with screws/nuts, there are wave washers that act as springs to fight the rattle. they eventually become flat washers and need to be replaced. Brakes without the screw/nut setup are pressed together and not serviceable. Your damage isn't from washer-rattle, but from the braking surface actually rotating with relation to the carrier. Hard braking, FOD, something caused that rotor to pivot on the carrier. Agree, do not ride until it is replaced. |

BTW, those bolts that hold the rotor on are held in with a healthy dose of loctite and are listed as use once and throw away. You need to knock some sense into them with a nice brass drift and a hammer before they will come loose. Personally, I have reused my bolts many times and it still hasn't killed me. Just be warned that you are supposed to chuck them and get fresh bolts. |

I've tried to tighten these, even removed them once, because I was going to try and reduce the rattle, and lets just say there is NO way these are coming off with hand tools. I will most likely use a dremal to remove them, a little more surgical than a hammer. |

Heat. Soak them with penetrant overnight (or more) then heat them up prior to removal. MAKE SURE to get all the penetrant off the braking surface before reinstalling the brake on the bike (damhik). |

they will come off with hand tools...I had to use this tool, and some heat but they did finally come out. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-impact-driver/p-009 47641000P buy a few spare torx bits though!...I heated each of the bolts up and let them cool, ...a few cycles each, then used this impact driver that when hit with a hammer it has about 1/8 turn rotation...it backed them right out. |

Its your bike I would not use that rotor. the metal behind and under the bobbin has been up set [ deformed ] the steel has been damaged in the carrier, paper weight +2 AL at American Sport Bike |

The 6-hole carrier is aluminum not steel - take a magnet to it! Regardless, it's a paper weight now. |

By the way those are the stock bolts and spacers . As stated replace the carrier. I have no issues with mine but some say they wear out quickly . |
