Ok so I have a gen 1 Showa shock that looks like it's had a leak at some point so I was going to send it off to Race Tech for a rebuild but I came across an offer that kinda seems like it might be a little nicer. If everything is kosher I can get a brand new gen 2 Showa M2L shock for about what the rebuild would cost me. I'd love to get an aftermarket shock but it's not in the budget right now. The reason I went with the gen 1 shock to begin with is the length...I'm going to use a front Mount for a 14.8" standard gen 2 shock with the 16.5" gen 1 shock to lower the bike. I know the M2L shock isn't as long as the gen 1 shock, but it'd still lower things a little bit. So I guess my big question is, is there anything about the gen 2 shocks that makes them superior to the gen 1 shocks (I do have the reinforcement kit for the gen 1), or would I be better off just sticking with what I have so I get more of a drop? Also if I do stick with the gen 1 are the gold valves worth it or just go with a stock rebuild? Thanks! Nick |

If you do that it will lower you to the limit of travel. 1.7" of difference will lower you about 3.4". The 16.5" shocks had quite a few failures due to breakage. What I did was keep the original mount, get a gen 2 shock, and build it a steel hat to lengthen it a bit more than an inch. My leanstand still works and my ride height is lowered about 1 1/4". My headlight was able to adjust and still hits the ground in the right place. If you lower your rear wheel 3 inches and don't lower the front you will be illuminating squirrels in the trees.

The front will be going down as well since I'm installing XB12R forks. I like your idea though. I think I might just see if I can get that M2L shock and try it first... if it's not low enough for me then I'll weld up a bracket like that. Thanks for the idea! |
