Hey guys! I have a 95 S2 that started doing something weird recently. I rode it to work and back one day and it ran like a champ. All of a sudden the bike cut out like it was running on 1 cylinder. Backfiring and bogging bad. Then few seconds later it kicked back to normal and shot like a bat outta hell. Then it bogged again for a few seconds, then fine again and so on. Checked the plugs/wires and intake and everything looks fine. When it cuts out the headlight dims and the tach needle goes crazy all over the place.

I thought it might be the ignition coil, so I put a timing light on the bike to check if when it bogged down the light would stop flashing on either cylinder. I dont know how this coil works, but the weird thing was that it flashed normal on one wire and barely flashed on the other one when running fine. Then when it bogged, the wire that it was barely flashing on started flashing like the other wire did when it was running fine. Is this normal? Also, seems to do this more so when the engine is still cold and warming up it seems. Although the first time it did it the bike was fully warmed up.
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like intermittent voltage from the battery, look for loose connections or a short. The brain box hates low voltage.

I will try that and see, Thanks!

I was also told to check the resistance of the coil on both sides and see if it differs at all. If it does then the coil would be bad. Sound about right?

Well, I checked the wiring and the positive battery cable was a little loose. I tightened it up, fired the bike up and it didnt bog whatsoever. Took it for a ride and everything.

This morning I hop on it to go to work and it starts bogging a block down the road. Uugh! The tach wasnt going nuts this time tho. Rpms just dropped while bogging until it kicked back in normally, then all was fine again. I just rode it back and took car to work.

Any thoughts?

That is what I am wondering once I saw the recall information. I know mine still has the old style vent too. My local HD dealer said most of that stuff is gone for good and cant be found. I made the other thread about it in case anyone knows an alternative fuel vent that would work in place of the recall part.

A clogged vent will be like running out of fuel - it creates a vacuum in the tank that prevents fuel from going through the petcock. In my experience, the only way to "fix" that when it happens is to unlock (lift/twist the latch handle) the fuel cap, allowing the vacuum to dissipate.

Well, I removed the vent and just stuck the hose in the vent hole while taking ti for a test ride. It still bogged and misfired. I took the hose off on the way back to the house and got sprayed to shit with fuel out of the hole. Since I do in fact have the old style vent, would you advise me to go ahead and replace it with the new stuff anyways?

Check your circuit breakers. Replace them all. Cheap, maybe $10 each a the car store.
Had the same thing happen on my 95. Instant fix.
Shane, was that yours we replaced here on your way to the S2 gathering a couple of years ago? Maybe it was Franks... man, I'm getting old and forgetful.

Where would the circuit breakers be located by chance?

That was Frank 's bike. It was dying intermittently. Could be breakers, could be a bad battery cable with an interior bad spot unseen.
Look above the battery under the seat and body work for the breakers.

Seems to me that the circuit breakers fixed the issue. Will really know tomorrow when I take it for a longer ride than just around my neighborhood. It was rainy off and on today. Will let you all know. Thanks again to everyone who pitched in to help. I really appreciate it!

Told ya!
Many S2's have seen this. They all will eventually. Just carry a spare in case.
