DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT Class 101, just PM me if want a copy ...

If the DRIVE BELT is adjusted too tight it will brake the belt no mater how strong it is ...

There is something severely wrong with your rear suspension if you broke 4 belts in 1000 miles. If it were my bike I would not ride it until I found out the problem. A properly adjusted (read: very loose) newer style belt should outlast most other moving parts on the bike. I have 20K on mine and it looks just like the day I put it on the bike. Not even a single blemish. Do you have the stone guards - both top and bottom or they've been removed for aesthetic reasons? Also check the wheel/final drive bearings. Find out why.

I have all the OEM guards intact.

I took the bike to HD after breaking 4 belts. They checked the swingarm, etc. The only thing they recommended was to SIGNIFICANTLY tighten the belt to the factory spec. I explained that the first 3 were AT factory spec before they broke, and that riders seemed to find that LOOSER is better. My belt is now STUPID LOOSE as described here.

I had previously taken it to a bike shop who said everything was FINE.

So apparently where I live at least, no one can seem to find any issues, and belts just keep breaking..

Melbourne H-D does not want to service Buells.

I have to special order every part I get from them.

4 in 1000 miles is excessive; you must have an alignment issue. PM me and I'll swing by your home so we can compare. I have 45,000 miles on my original.

It can also be riding style. Belts (or chains, or universal joints) don't like snap-loading. If you wheelie a lot, speed shift a lot, or hammer your downshifts...it will all drastically shorten belt life.

I've only ever broken two belts, both on my Ulysses, both on admittedly hard 1-2 shifts. I've never broken a tuber belt. 40k on my first M2. 8k on my S1W. 32k on the S2. And nearly 80k on my old FLHP.

You can also check your sprockets for burrs. If one of the "teeth" has a rough edge it could be weakening belts.

"You can also check your sprockets for burrs. If one of the "teeth" has a rough edge it could be weakening belts."

In addition to the two shops checking things - I went to a new 30T front sprocket, and replaced the rear sprocket (which did have some flaking chrome). I haven't really ridden since replacing the rear sprocket - after that I got into all of the fuel system problems and I'm still working on those.

The X1 is higher maintenance than my girlfriend [1]!

[1] - if anyone from here meets my ole lady, don't mention the girlfriend around her; it seems to tick her off...

You were speaking about the girlfriend you haven't seen since just before you met your wife, right?

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

If you are running the standard aluminium swingarm you should be able to get the belt to touch both sides of it at the same time using finger pressure

Yes, thats the advice I got from BWB and that's how its currently set. The Dealer freaked and said its WAY TOO LOOSE- I told him to leave it alone.

Belts just don't break unless they are installed too tight.

The problem is that most are installed per the incorrect spec. found in the Shop Manual.

Follow Buellistic's installation method and forget about the belt.

When I did mine per Buellistic's instructions it looked too loose.

But it has been running just fine since then (almost 10 years ago).

No one can bust four kevlar belts in 1000 miles without having the wrong sprocket installed or a severe alignment issue.

Buellistic I read it, and followed the specs. I already said the H-D dealer told me it was WAY too loose and I told him to leave it alone. The bike has been down for fuel issues since, but THIS WEEK I expect to have her running when I get the new reg.

NO ONE CAN BUST 4 belts in 100 mi unless the have the wrong sprocket installed or alignment issues? I guess razor sharp rear-sprocket edges couldn't bust one- maybe I wasted my $ and effort replacing that sprocket recently. I said I haven't broken a belt since.

If you want the name of the shop who I took the broken belts and the bike to I can provide that also.

HARLEY ELF I'll get by WITHOUT your help thanks. I did PM you maybe you need contacts.. Or maybe you should get off JUNO and onto GMAIL- no WONDER you don't get messages..

I'm on outlook Live, too. Got no messages on either address. Have no problem communicating with legitimate Badwebbers.

See you there. I'll look for a 59-year-old with a name tag that says, "Call me Boy".
