All I can say is its been an interesting 24 hrs. From ashes to ashes... only to live again... Soon!! All the body work seemed to line up pretty good. But it seems the tank is the integral component.. It all looks factory to me.. including the paint on the tail and the PMX 1200 is under the clear coat I will sure need to do some fiberglass work No exposed air cleaner.. Please.... opinions, knowledge, advice, wisdom all WELCOME!! Thanks, Ride Safe, Chris |

May as well run with this one. The title is correct and the history is with it. Good thing you've got that Handy lift. You're gonna' need it. They even took the ENGINE apart? WTH were they thinking? I thought this was for a redo of the body and paint? |

Perhaps it ate the primary tensioner or the shift detent plate needed attention and then they thought what the hell, why not put in some cams and paint it while it's apart? And then the project stalled out. I've been in similar positions. A project is like a shark; if it stops moving forward, it dies. |

LOL...I built a Honda 750 ACE that was like this. The bike was dropped and during the repaint they decided to paint the frame to match and do a light customization on it. When I bought it I carried the parts out to the trailer in lots of trips. It went together and came apart more times than I can count, LOL!! It turned out awesome, but never again. Looks like you have a fun project there though!! |

Ok here we stay.. What I can figure from the mock up is that it was on its way back to life when the project stalled. This SHARK will never die!! Primary tensioner is updated but not NEW. Shifter detent is in pieces but I don't see anything broken or worn. Pistons & Cylinders & Heads looked great..the crankcase had enough CLEAN oil in it to keep the rod bearings very happy Cams... From what I read the rated HP on the RS was 68Hp@6K.. S2 is 76@5250... Cams.. I gave ONE of the cams lobe a look, I "mentally noted" i thought it looked good for 17K. New idk. I need to look again. The HANDY LiIFT..yes it is a WONDERFUL tool !!! I looking to rig up an overhead lift point to it. Here is my dilemma BONE Stock resto....or OTHER...????? I would guess the engine ## was not a mach to the frame ## at this point in Buell history. Please correct me....because they don't here .They look on the fly.. but legit!! SO.... With this bike got delivered 95 S2 #1339 12K on the clock No papers... No keys... It is not STOLEN just a stupid kid!! I have pix of expired regi's & his passport. NO $$ till I get DA PAPERS I plugged in my key switch & it fired right up!!! A super hi dose of Seafoam & fresh 93 she runs like a dream!!! If he cant get the papers I could....... I cant type it.... Was it REALLY late when I climbed on the mock up & put my feet on the pegs.. Those bars are a stretch away, much past my S2 or Beemer. Owners/Riders of both please confirm or deny riding position. Ride safe. Chris |

It's come up in the past (I'll try and find the thread) and my understanding is that the engine and VINs for RS/RSS models do NOT match because BMC got engines from Harley for production, so they were separately marked. None of mine match. But supposedly someone has access to build sheet data that can match them up. I've not been successful in that regard in establishing what was "original" for mine. Ride position IS somewhat of a stretch compared to later models! |

That pic of Smuige riding his RSS seems very relaxed... and S2 ish unless he has really long arms.... I felt like I was on a drag bike. Anyone else with action shots?? Chris |

Reach to the bars: yes, my RS is a longer reach than the low bars on my S2. The position is definitely more aggressive. Handy Lift: yes, you have the SAM. I'm got two BOBs. If you ever buy a second, consider the BOB or the Sport lift. The extra 10" of height is worth it. I LOVE those stupid things. I bring it up because I would personally start from the rear wheel. I'd polish it, do whatever you might want to do with the bearings, rotor, etc, then clamp that in the vise. From there, I'd assemble the swingarm, the engine, etc. Rest the engine on the scissor lift and build forward and upward from there. At some point, the frame will just naturally drop in over the engine and you'll assemble the side plates. You get what I'm describing. You basically did the same thing but, you had the front wheel clamped instead of the rear. The nice thing about this method is that the parts that need the cosmetics will come last. You'll get the momentum going on the easy stuff (mechanicals and polishing). By the time the engine and frame are looking good, the financial pain of doing the body and paint will be easy to swallow. My vote is to restore it as close s possible to factory. If that includes the tail section and odd air cleaner setup, so be it. Any clue what WAS done for an air cleaner on your bike? |

Thanks Greg, I can see working from the rear to the front & up being easier. I picked up this lift off of CL for $250 over the summer w side extensions and all it was barely used. It's not a Handy, but a knock off. I can see the 10" being very helpful, but for that price I wasn't being too picky. I do plan on using the tail section as I believe it to be factory & pretty unique (unless I learn otherwise). And will have Corbin do the seat... I doubt i'll find "champ"... I also plan to use the PMX 1200 badge again... again it's a mystery.. I hope to get to the bottom of BOTH issues before that stage of the restoration. I am sure the bike was originally black.. I highly doubt it will be when completed...again it all depends on any history I can muster up. If not black it will defiantly be a factory color from the period possibly the gun metal or light blue..idk it's a way off. Anyone know who could do the shock & fork rebuilds?? Here are pix of carb (with mods) I don't see using it as of now, & air filter. The cover is std chrome oval unit. Thanks Chris |

That air cleaner looks REAL familiar! The offset intake adapter on the carb looks typical. |

Carb is originaL? Air filter Tank bra & pouch Upon closer exam cam lobes show ever so slight wear, the only markings are 10 20 30 40 .. Pistons are HD ## 22850-88 ROLLER lifters... Somebody had their fingers in her.. (Message edited by k12pilot on March 12, 2013) |

Correct me if I'm wrong...but they should be roller lifters, I thought. That's why there are pins in the case to keep them from rotating...if you look at the photo of the cam side of the engine, at the base of the cylinders, you'll see three holes in a triangle at the bottom of each cylinder. That gets a triangular plate with two pins, and one bolt to hold it in. Those pins rest against the flats on the upper ends of the lifters, to keep the lifters from spinning "sideways" in their bores. |

Rat is correct, that generation motor should have used 'Hi-Lift' brand roller tappets. |

If you haven't sorted out where that speedo controller box goes yet - the one on my 'slightly modified' RS had it zip-tied to the side of the battery hold-down strap. the plug receptacle end of the box protruded above the battery itself, so that the wiring harness connected to the box over the top of the battery. Right side of battery viewed from top of bike. The ECM mounted to that flat plate just to the left of the rear head - it looks like there's some circuit breakers on the back of that plate in the photos, but hard to see. Al |
