Hello everyone, long time lurker and first time poster here. I have searched far and wide for help on changing my transmission fluid, but to no avail. I would like a simple (or really lengthy and hard to explain, I can work with either) walkthrough on how to drain and refill my beloved tuber. I have no access to a manual, and I have no funds to buy one right now.. But I'm familiar with changing the engine oil, and I like to consider myself fairly adept with a wrench.. so fire away.

Also, it's an honor to get to be around so many buell lovers! Keep on keepin' on guys.

Welcome to Badweb!

Here you go Matt, now you have access to a manual:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/3607.html?1354256749

Scroll up, eighth thread up from the bottom is the S1 manual - "Service Manual - Buell S1 Lightning Service Manual"

While I have recently been reminded that 2nd gear ratio changed on the 2000+ model years, the service on the M2 tranny/primary is the same as the S1.

Thanks! There's such a wealth of info here..

And thank you for referring me to that pdf, as I have already checked it out, and I must be missing something obvious here.. Because I'll go to the pdf, and there are no links past the "Intro", basically the table of contents? I can see what pages everything is on.. but I can't actually read any of the info. Believe me.. It's driving me nuts!

Drain plug is at bottom of primary, probably blocked by your muffler if you have an aftermarket one. Take the drain plug out, drain your fluid, put the drain plug back in (check o-ring and remove metal filings from plug). Take off derby cover and funnel in just shy of 1 quart of sport-trans or Syn3. Put derby cover back on. Done.

Is the derby cover.. the "clutch inspection cover" on the primary?.. Not familiar with the term "Derby". Forgive the wet behind the ears questions!

I prefer pretty much every fluid but water over sport trans. Ugh. Syn3, Formula+, Mobile One... After using synthetics I've always been less satisfied with the shifting when using sport trans.... but that may just be me...

Sorry Matt, I just tried that link, it used to actually work, I wonder what happened there. Hmmm.

Hey, no biggie! I downloaded it from a site.. If anyone ever wants the link, I could give it out (not that you couldn't find it through google). I'm off to Truetts to get some formula+.. And if anyone ever wants to check out some Kansas harley drags.. go to youtube and look up Truett and Osborne. Cool stuff!

Hey Matt! Nice bike.
I used to drive from Wichita to Oxford to pick up our food co-op supply of flour from the Old Mill. Good stuff.

I use Syn3 also, the shifting does feel better somehow. Every little bit helps.

One other thing while you're there, is the Primary Chain adjustment. The little round cover to the left of the 'Derby' has a chain behind it. Said chain should move up and down a total travel of 3/4 inch (measure at a rivet or something.) The adjuster is the bolt- looking thing sticking down from the bottom of the engine about even with the little round cover. It has a lock-nut on it. This primary chain adjusted so will also perceptibly improve the shifting. Apparently the manual says 1/2" but its supposed to be 3/4".

We have hit a wall.. One of the nuts on the primary cover is completely rounded out. Nowwww I'm in trouble..

compare one of the others you remove to whatever drills you have on hand, then carefully drill the thing out til the head is off, once the cover is off you can get the thing out the rest of the way.

when removing the clutch inspection cover loosen each screw a little then back off each incrementally, otherwise you load up the others to the point that you strip a head. There's a spring pushing against it from the inside.

Alrighty, can do! For now, I think I will put my plug back in and pour my quart of oil through the primary chain adjustment window, then mess with that bolt at a later date. Momma always told me that a stitch, in time, would save nine though..

Sorry, I spaced the fact that you're only changing the fluid, just drill the one, make sure the others have been loosened, once the the derby cover is off you should be able to get that drilled off screw with some needle nose pliers if you can't turn it out by hand.

Usually it's pretty easy to get it out once the tension is removed from the plate.

Replace the torx screws with some chromed grade 8, or stainless allen head fasteners from the dealership.

Just an update, I was able to get the oil in through the window, and it shifts much easier! Rode it around town a little, double checked and looked to make sure everything was tightened securely and not leaking.. of course, i didn't have a way to check how much oil I put in, but I put in just under a quart, per Kilroy's advice, and we're good. Thank you all again! She still grinds into first occasionally, but I fear that is a more serious issue than just oil..

Nice bike you have there. Formula+ is all I use in my tubers. Pretty good oil. I had the same issue with my primary cover inspection hole (the small one). Stripped! Took it off and brought it to Hal's HD to get it drilled out. $50, 20 minutes, and I was on my way home.

You are correct, there is a wealth of info here on BadWeb. Welcome!

Grinding in first can be one of the first warning signs of either a problem with a cracked primary shoe (old version) or a cracked "e-clip" on the shifter drum detent plate.
