I have a heavily modified S2 that has the Buell factory 2 1/2" racing exhaust with a pretty short muffler. The packing is fine, but it is very LOUD!

What can I put on this beautiful bike that will keep my exhaust flow up and quiet her down to a reasonable level for the street?

I saw another 2 1/2 " Buell "racing" exhaust that had a much longer muffler that might work? Were there different performance exhaust systems available from Buell back "in the day"?

Help! I want to ride my bike, but am concerned that I will get a citation from law enforcement's finest!

It's a perforated tube inside fiber packing, so you should be able to see right through it.

You can "re-manufacture" the perf tube. There are snouts inside the muffler to use as guides - you'll see when you remove the ends. Just get some chicken wire, wrap it into a tube, wire it so it stays rolled, and stuff the outside of the tube with steel wool or fiberglass or whatever.

My system looks like the pictures. It was purchased from Buell in 1997 - the invoice says it is a Buell race system. I tried to attach a pic, but the file is too big. It has a 2 1/2" diameter inlet. I looked inside and it is just a long tube that looks like it has tiny holes with (I am told) packing between the tube and the muffler.

The question is what can I do to quiet this thing down enough to use it on the street?

Thanks!

Remove the muffler.

Drill the rivets on the outlet end.

Install this:

Or if you prefer, use steel wool in place of the fiberglass. The tone is a little deeper, but I've been seeing some longer life out of my packing compared to the fiberglass.

FYI - D&D uses stainless packing in their tuber mufflers.

Thx Joe..
Im just in the process of putting the engine back 2gether..I had .005 cut outa the cases to free up the cylinder spigots, and scored a set of 10-1 pistons offa ebay...it had 10.5-1, and one skirt was collasped about .005 from being squeezed by outa round case holes..They used wiseco pistons which im not that fond of, but with the 3 3/4 bore, thats all that was available...No oversizes either avail..
Frame is out getting powder coated and stuff getting cleaned up and repaired...
I will prob order up that baffle kit for the exhaust...Thx for the tip on it...HB

Well, I took the muffler apart and it was packed perfectly as it came from the factory. However, it is very LOUD! Is there any other option? Help!

A few years ago I made an exhaust for the M2 using a stainless Magnaflow muffler, and it was LOUD! So I put a 2-1/2" automotive baffle in muffler inlet and that helped tone it down a bit. Might be worth a try.

My race mufflers are fairly mellow...but depending on what cams are in your "built" motor, that could add to exhaust noise through valve overlap and lift profiles.

I have the race muffler on both my M2, and my S1W. The S1W is snortier than the M2. When I had a race muffler on my S2 with X1 cams, it was snorty as well...

I have a stock muffler on the S2 now and it runs just fine with the X1 cams, rejetted stock carb, and thunderstorm heads.

My motor seems to be pretty built up. It has Axtell 1450 kit, STD ported and flowed dual plug heads, S&S rods, a pretty strong Red Shift cam (623V2) and Axtell carb, balanced, etc. The previous owner spent about $10k back in 1998 to have all the work done, and then put just 2K miles on it and parked it. I have been told that I must run the race headers and can for the engine to run properly. If it's too loud, I think I will just sell her to a good home.

The race header is actually quieter than a V&H. It's a nice sound actually, not annoying like a Force.
With your built up motor it will probably have more "pop" due to the higher compression, bigger cans and hotter cams.

Toss a "stock" can on it and take it for a rip and see if you can feel the difference in power.

I like the stock exhaust for long hauls but, the D&D bark makes me smile too much to put the stock back on. Rather just wear ear plugs and keep the throttle in check around the neighbourhood and LEOs.

See some stock mufflers on ebay and even on the board hear from time to time.

Good luck.
