Well gents, I took the plunge and pulled my motor out of the M2, I ordered the NRHS 1250 kit, and I got my hands on a set of heads from a XB firebolt, new clutch (tossed the spring plate)and N4 cams (490) lift. I'm picking up the bodywork from the body shop tomorrow, going all black/blaze orange. Blaze orange on the frame and rims. It was fairly easy with the exception of the frame mounts on the swingarm, I got them out but wow, what a pain in the ass. I have also got my hands on a Vance/Hines carbon fiber slipon and a new CV carb with Dynojet kit installed. I will post pics soon. Goody

What's the difference in the cylinders, between the XB kit and the M2 kit? Are the fins bigger, or what else?

I hate badweb for limiting posting size of pics, keeps rejecting my uploads.
Anyway, frame is stripped, bodywork has been painted (black), rims painted (orange) frame goes in this Friday, forks are being rebuilt, going to tear into the heads this weekend. I did notice when stripping the frame that the front motor mount was dry rotted and separating from mount. I will try to post pics up again. NRHS was very helpful with information on cams and carb updates. More to come.

Doing paint on body, frame and rims. going to powerboat engine side cases. looks good so far, I let the tank dry in the Sun on the weekends to get a good cure. the frame will be done next week. I'm going try and get started on the engine now that I have my parts from Al. I had to order the worm gear and front motor mount. worm gear had some sharp edges on it, front motor mount was coming apart.

Hopefully I resized these correctly. Heads are in the process of rebuild. Lots of carbon built up on pistons and heads. I have a theory that venting the crankcase through the intake tract adds to the carbon buildup. I'm going to vent to the atmosphere through the TDC hole instead of the heads.

Here's where I am, lapping the valves and resealing the heads this weekend. Hope to have the heads on tomorrow and cams installed. I stuck with the stock cams because from the research I did, it will have more grunt and I like grunt. I will have the frame and rear pulley next week, I went by yesterday and it was still in the paint booth. it is a slow process, the forks are in the shop being resealed. I'm going to paint the cases black instead of powder coating, save time and money. I have about $1100 in paint and body work so far. Once it is all done I will have about $4500 all together including the cost of the bike when I bought it. Good deal as far as I'm concerned. I will keep ya posted now that I know how to resize and what program to resize with. This is what she looked like before i tore her down. Cheers.

I put the energy one clutch in mine and removed the spring plate. I thought of the SE 497 cams but I'm paying as I go and it wasnt in the budget and its the same cams that are in the X1s and I have ridden them before, not that impressive. I prefer the low end cams. I will eventually get the works shock but for now I'm committed to building a good looking Buell with modifications and enhance what is a damn good bike. I dont think there are to many M2L bikes out there and from what I see on ebay, a large portion of Buells, old and new are being parted out. Sad. Its a fun project and I have the money to do it right, looking forward to getting my frame back and begin putting it all back together. I finished one of the heads tonight, lapped the valves, polished the intake and exhaust ports, a dremel is a good tool for this with a mini flapper wheel and abrasive buff wheels.

This is the look I am going for, forks and swingarm on mine will be black. I wont be putting any decals on the tank, I have some OEM Buell decals in blaze orange for swingarm or rear fender, haven't decided yet. I like the racing stripes but have a better idea in mind for front windscreen.
I was originally going to do a black/lime green scheme but I didn't want to stray too far from Buell original colors, I want people to know it's a M2 and not question what model it is. I had that problem with my STT. The STT was definitely a Buell but hard to tell which model. I will upload pics later today of headwork and cams if I get that far.

i like your colour combination Goody. & i'm with you on the stock cams i love Torque i can't feel HP at all.
I'm wondering why you chose to go 1250cc as it is only 3 more cubic inch shared between two cylinders. the capacity gain will not make much difference. what else is different with the 1250 barrels? & is the barrels Hammer sells the same manufacturer? i'm just trying to learn.
also i don't like the energy one clutch, i have one in my bike now. i think stock clutch plates are better. i'm thinking of going back putting stock clutch plates and adding a new stock clutch plate in place of spring plate.
i'm planing on doing my heads soon, but i think i'll weld up the chamber and have a different chamber machined in also weld up the exhast port to try to make more Torque. i will machine the base of barrels to get piston up for tighter swish & put adjustable ignition as i'll go for about 11:0.1 comp with flat top pistons

Hey Lakes.. long time no hear.. How long have you had the Buell ?? have you still got the Dyna ??? I still havn't got around to rebuilding the sporty yet..

I'm in Brissy now, not far from you (well compared to up north anyway : ) )


I think those 1250 barrels are a nicasil alumminium instead of a cast iron sleeve. So you gain a bit from the material in heat dissipation and the extra 50cc is just a bonus. Look at them as a stock replacement that runs cooler. I've got a few sets of 88" Sporty/Buell ones here. I'm with you on the clutch plates too, the stock ones are a bit softer on the take up, Barnett ones are more like a switch, especially with the heavy spring. Great for drag racing but not as good for the street.

Hey Stevo, yes been a while. yes still have the dyna just the crank sensor seems to be gone. & got lazy. will fix it soon. i got the Buell M2 about three months ago have ridden it 7,000k since i got it love it, have always liked the tube frame Buells. i did not know they were the alloy nik barrels? but i've never seen them just three friends here are all getting or planing on getting the 1250 barrels from Hammer but i don't know much at all about them. they tell me they can't bore the new 883 out thats the reason. & one guy said the hammer have a thicker cast iron liner than stock & tappers off to go into the stock case. i was thinking it might be like the 106" s&s barrels for twin cam. but as said i know very little at all trying to learn. but have seen some quick 88" sportsters are yours cast iron?

Yeah moved down here about 3 years ago, still havn't got the workshop fully closed down, heading up there tomorrow to try and finish it off once and for all.

Buells came out with the same cast iron barrels as sporties, most of the 1250 ones I've seen are nicasil, I have two sets of nicasil 88" barrels for the sporty/buell.

Have you priced stock HD barrels lately??? Not worth boring.

Have you've got one of the early Dynas with the cam sensor ? They seemed to be an issue at times.

Lakes, The 1250 kit from NRHS I got has the steel liners in them (look at pic you can see the steel liner).





I wanted the steel for longevity, not that my cylinders were in bad shape, actually they are in great shape. I just prefer steel over nikasil, at least in a street bike.
I will gain a little in performance from the 1250 kit and I heard good things about NRHS, they were very helpful.
I chose the energy one heavy duty clutch spring plate and stock clutch plates. I tossed the spring plate and added the extra 2 friction plates and one steel. The stock clutch plates are pretty good plates. I prefer a heavy clutch feel, probably from all of my MX and SuperMoto bikes, I like a good grip/grabby clutch.
I have built many, many dirt bikes, 4T and 2T and I have always wanted to do a rebuild on a V-twin. The bike needed a lot of TLC, body work, fork seals, motor mounts, oil leaks and I wanted to replace the worm gear for the oil pump. Sooo my buying the 1250 was part of the upkeep, I'm rationalizing the purchase but hey, its cool.
I got the cometic complete top end kit and pistons/rings assembled into the cylinders. They also did ring end gap, to me it was money worth spending, very cheap.
My 3 piece valve coves weren't leaking so I chose to stay with them.
I had considered boring the cases and going "all out" on a rebuild but decided to stick close to original intent of the M2, a good running tuber that I can hold onto for a long time. Once you get into case boring and increasing compression it stresses the whole drivetrain. I wanted a little more and I figured if I polish the intake and exhaust ports, I could gain some there as well. Just getting all of that carbon out of there has to be an improvement. I will add more to it later on but I kept the rebuild reasonable in regards to time, I dont like doing rebuilds that take longer than 8 to 10 weeks. Parts and motivation get lost on long rebuilds. Thanks for the input and questions.

It's lookin good Goody.

I've had similar discusions with customers over the years especially the Harley crowd where they go too big on cams to try and get some big HP number on paper at the top end of the rev range when they spend most of their time at low to mid range.

One has to keep a clear view on what you actually want out of the motor before you start playing with it and an 88" sporty/buell motor introduces a lot of issues that far outweigh the benefits for most street riden bikes.

N2's or W grind cams work well on the street, N4's or SE 0.497" bolt ins start to open the overlap up enough for the exhaust to start making a difference and that exhaust can move the power up or down the range.

SE 0.536's really bring the exhaust into play and in most cases will lose a bit down the bottom unless it's feeding 88" .

Bigger than that and it starts to get to be not much fun as a daily ride.

Looking forward to the finished product, it's lookin good so far.

Thanks Steve, It will look good and once I get it where I want it, I can modify it here and there. I dont want to modify it to the point that it becomes a race bike, that wasnt my intent.
I think a lot of Harley guys want more on top because they want more RPM power, if that is the case then you really shouldn't be on a HD motor. HD motors are known for torque and that is what attracted me to the Buells. I have had 2 other Buells before this M2. A 9SX and a 12STT.






I hated selling the STT but divorce has a way of screwing things up. Anyway, I hope to have it all back together here in a couple of weeks. I'm going to play with it some more today but I'm at a point where I have to wait on the frame. TTYL

Sounds like you have the right idea Goody.
i'm an old guy that just never stopped riding. had HD's close to 40 years. i love Torque HD's are not a hi reving motor so the more Torque the more fun.
i have removed the breathers from the aircleaner since i've owned my Buell, but i took intake manifold off to check & replace seals, & i could see a lot of carbon build up in my intake ports & on intake valves. so i thought lifting the heads will be on my list to do, but 74CID is big enough as i know they come up hit you in the face.
Goody thats a nice STT i was riding with a friend on sunday & he has one too it has a micron system, i was looking at it and the two pipes go directly into the muffler & has a tail pipe each side. he loves it.
Goody does the cast iron liner tapper off were it goes into the cases? & is the liner thicker than the stock cast iron linner in your stock barrels? i'm just asking as three friends here looking at getting some, but we have not seen them here yet they want thick iron liners to hold the shape & seal better. S&S make a replacement set of barrels for twin cams that make a 88" 97" & a 96" 107 or 106'? i saw a set here my friend has fitted a few sets & likes them, they have a very thick cast iron liner much thicker than the stock twin cam liner the cast iron liner they use is machined off thiner were it goes into the cases. just wondering if thats what your 1250 kit barrels are like too? so i can tell my friends one guy won a new 883 EFI sporty in a raffle wants it 1200 so thought 1250 better if he has to buy barrels. the other two are engineers have XB buells they will design there pistons & have JE custom make to order & one has a very large flow bench he built himself he has been doing flow testing on a set of new xb heads he bought he will make his own chamber he also has an engine dyno always tuning and developing motors for customers. i think the bike is like a hobby he wants to beat me at the track LOL. all i want is more Torque for more fun as love riding.

Stevo no my Dyna is 2001 i think first year of the crank sensor only no cam sensor 90,000k up but motor only has about 10,000k as i twisted the stock flywheels that took oil pump out but the gear drive on cams was ok, got a set of stock low k flywheels the guy went to stroker i got my mate that races a nitro HD to weld the pin got a new stock oil pump i've ran 11.2 in quarter on it 121.5mph with a soft 1.8 sixty foot only got andrews 55 cams but my friend designed pistons had JE make to order and welded heads ports up i ride it anywhere love it. but love Buell too two totally different bikes shock tresatment made my rear shocks to my weight did my front forks to my weight so rides nice too. if i got my mate bob to ride it it would run in 10's stock wheelbase stock foot shift s&s clutch light springs ( good clutch ) bob road a dyna a HD tech built back in 99 it has headquarters heads & cams supertrapp pipe bob ran 11.1 118mph 1.5 sixty foot so with my extra HP showing up in trap speed @ 121.5mph with Bob on it its a 10 second bike just not too worried right now.

Lakes, sorry for the delay, the liners on the 1250 kit from NRHS are twice as thick as the stock steel liners in the cylinder.
No taper on the bottom but they are thinner than stock at the bottom of the liner. The bottom of the liners didn't concern me being thinner since they have the bore on the cases to support them. Overall the NRHS kit appears to be a good quality product. I'm a welder/fabricator by trade and I can tell when something is poorly made/cast. I'm wiring up the bike this week and hope to have it on its wheel by this weekend. I am picking up my sensors and oil hose today. The old oil hoses need to be replaced, they were very hard and getting brittle.

I have the stock pipe with a Vance&Hines carbon fiber muffler. I plan on wrapping the header, I like the looks of a good wrap on the header instead of having it coated. I have had wraps last over 2 years if they are sealed properly. My last two Buells were wrapped. I put the wiring harness on the bike last night and I will have it on its wheels this weekend, I'm picking up the forks tonight after work. If I have no issues, I might even get her started this weekend. I will post a pick soon.

Goody will be good to hear your report on how it all works out & how it runs. I'm not a big fan of heat wrap on pipes, but I have used it in the past & I know guys that love it & the look. I prefer the look of silver hi temp ceramic coating, although I don't think it makes any difference to performance. It does cut heat from pipe. But everyone to what they personally like.
