Ok, short story on my bike. I bought it a couple months ago and I have been doing some research on the x-1s just learning about them. My bike has had all the bodywork sprayed in Linex (bedliner material) and I was unsure of the original color. When I did my rockerbox gaskets I saw where the bodywork was originally blue. The other clue that tips me off is the large BUELL raised decal that runs vertically on the flyscreen. The bike also has the billet "race" pegs on it. All the pictures I have seen of race stripe Buells have the pegs and vertical decal, but the regular buells do not. It does NOT have a numbered gas cap, but I am not sure the 99s did anyway. Is there a VIN# breakdown that says which vin was and was not a racing stripe bike?? I feel like if it was an original stripe bike I need to return it to its former glory, although I do really like the Linex on it. LOL. |

I have read that the numbered caps did not start until 2000...don't know for sure. I was turned off by the whole bedliner thing on the phone when I called about it, BUT... I really looks pretty cool. |

is there any way, since we know it was sold in MA, title maybe to, possibly track it back to the original dealer that sold it, from there maybe see how many sold racing stripes from that dealer and take a guess?? once you know you can always have someone engrave a cap. but there has to be a way to find what number it is! |

seen a lot of racing stripes for sale the past month`s because i was searching for one. most of them didn`t have the engraved cap. i tried to find out which number it was but this seems to be impossible. at the moment i am considering to buy a blue racing stripe #293 of 350. a lot of the blue racing stripes went to france take a look at this site from a french racing stripe owner.he tries to register the numbered racing stripes. http://clbres.servhome.org/anglais/index_ang.html http://clbres.servhome.org/anglais/index_ang.html |

Hmm...You might be onto something Barrick! Sounds like some work, but might be doable. Does anybody know of a place that could engrave the cap the way it needs to be done?? |

OK...here we go! I found a place somewhat local to me that does laser etching. I sent them the picture of the gas cap with a nice little e-mail explaining what I want to do and why. Hopefully I will get some sort of response. Fingers crossed!! I also have did a little vin searching and found out the bike was in MA as recent as 5-25-11... |

does the title tell you anything? I know in West Virginia the titles go back 3 owners so if it is the original title and I'm within the first 3 owners of my bike then all the contact info, name, address, phone etc. for the very first owner fall on the title, if you knew who the first one was they might know the number, since they did buy it lol |

LOL...nope, I got it in indiana and they send the titles off and reassign them in the new owners name. Same in IL, my name is the only one on the title. |

Welp...Made my first phone call to Sheldon HD in Auburn MA today to find out some info (maybe). Talked to a gal on the phone who said it was probably sold there in 99 but there records were stored off site and it would be a "monumental undertaking to even begin to find any info" for me and "I am not will to do that for you". How nice is that?? I can feel the love.... |

I am from MA. I bought my X1 in 2001 from Boston H-D. At that time, Sheldon's didn't have Buells. Boston H-D since then stopped selling Buells, stopped selling EVERYTHING (went out of business) and then Rossmayer bought them up. Then Rossmayer went out of business. In other words, you'll find the original author of the dead sea scrolls before you get in touch with anyone that has useful info on this end! The only thing that was actually different about the racing stripe bikes was the paintjob and the gascap. Since the paint has been messed up and the gas cap is swapped out, you basically have the same bike as me (only perhaps less leaky!) |

Natexlh, You are right in some aspects...but my VIN says it is a stripe bike and yours does not, LOL. I am going to try and track down the original owner and see if they can give any info. The search continues.... |
