Are both of these Michael's? I know he's out on LI, but these two have his "show" to them.

Yeah, that would be me! I thought about it for 4 days and finally pulled the trigger. Couldn't have come at a worse possible time for me financially, but I always seem to manage. Gonna hafta give up my other X1 to cover part of the cost, but I think it was worth it! Now I've just gotta plan a little trip from Cleveland, OH to Brooklyn, NY

PS: Court, if you don't mind I'm going to be contacting you to see if it would be possible to make copies of anything you might have pertaining to this bike, all the knowledge I have right now is what I've found in the archives and your book!}}

I've got TONS of stuff . . be patient . . .it's a science of finding, not having it. I need to find the owners, parts and service manuals. Parts are going to be much easier than you might think and it's a fabulous bike to ride.

Let me know when you're coming to pick up up and we'll go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Well done.

By the way . . . there is an interesting story about that bike. Remind me to tell you sometime . . .

Somebody stole it . . . .

Not really, that is fair market value. In fact that is the highest I've seen for an RS on Ebay.

Explain to me . . . how "Fair Market Value" is ascribed to something that a mere 6 units exist in the world.

Show me just one 1992 RS1200, in pristine condition, that has sold for less than that.

One will do . . .

I paid about $18,000 for mine. They'll be back there soon.

DISCLAIMER: I have no interest in this bike nor this transaction.

P.S. - I'm not saying your wrong . . . but I've kept fairly close track of where the RS's are . . . and I'd write Hoglvr a check for that one tomorrow for what he paid for it.

Be mindful that Jay Leno owns twice as many Vincent Black Shadows than there are 1992 RS1200's in existence.

I'll allow Wikipedia to define FMV, "...estimate of the market value of a property, based on what a knowledgeable, willing, and unpressured buyer would probably pay to a knowledgeable, willing, and unpressured seller in the market. An estimate of fair market value may be founded either on precedent or extrapolation. Fair market value differs from the intrinsic value that an individual may place on the same asset based on their own preferences and circumstances."

6 units in the world? Red ones? There were 208 RS's produced between 89 and 92.

The guy in San Diego who has the 2 RR1200's and the RR1000 was attempting to sell his red RS for about that same amount, 5500, a couple years back. No one bit so he didn't sell. I believe his was a 91 kit bike.

I'd say you got ripped off for 18,000. But refer to intrinsic value above. Now if we were talking RSS's then I would pay that.

Looks like you got a really nice unit for a great price. Mine sold for right about the same price, and mine was FAR from original.

Those bikes handle exceedingly well - my 'seat of the pants' judgement is that the RS frame made the bikes both more stable, more 'nimble' if that's a valid assessment, and just more fun than most of the later tube frame bikes.

ENJOY!

Make sure that if Court takes it out for a ride, that you get it back the same day, with the tires still usable, and gas topped off. His 'around the block' might involve western Pennsylvania.

Yes, I agree even if Court borrows your S2 to ride on a closed race track it can turn out to be an extended ride....

...or a Wisconsin pasture or two...

Glad it's staying "in the family", so to speak. I was just about to pull the trigger, but still - despite a conversation with Court about it - unable to justify a sixth Buell in the garage.

Yet.

I will own an RS at some point.

Thank you for buying it. That red was calling me (seriously, candy red, my favorite color). I drove 800 miles and walked away from a 1991 two months ago because it was the solid red (well, and the owner was full of crap regarding the condition).

I would have pulled the trigger on this one but, I just hauled this Excelsior Henderson from Nebraska one week ago and I'm cash strapped. I briefly even considered floating the RS on a credit card. Yes, the bike looked that nice in the pictures. Enjoy it!

It's funny. I started this thread because I came across this bike and said no way, can't do it. I decided to put a link to it here in the hopes that some fellow BadWebber would "keep it in the family" as Ratbuell stated. That way I knew it would go to a good home.

I spent the next 4 days going back and looking at it, seeing if it had been sold or bidded up. Nothing. And I knew that if I kept going back and forth and looking at it, one of those times it would be gone.

The funny thing is, my ten-year-old daughter is the one that eventually pushed me off the fence. I had shown it to her, told her I was trying to resist, and at the same time trying to figure out a way to make it possible. When I came up with a way to do it, I still hemmed and hawed. She had asked me a couple weeks ago why I liked Buells so much. I told her that even though Daddy loves his Harleys, it seems like everyone and their brother rides one now. I had been attracted to HDs at an early age because I thought they were so different from other bikes. Now not so much, you see one on every corner. Which is why I fell in love with Buells. I hardly ever see one, and I was always a little different myself, so I enjoy going in a different direction than the majority of people. In a nutshell, they're unique.

She reminded me of this conversation. I hit the buy-it-now.

I think I made a good choice. I got a fairly rare bike in good shape that I am going to know the complete history of, for less than some people are asking for a cobbled-up S1.

I'm a happy camper!

I always like the Excelsior, for some reason. The all black one. did this one have some of the upgrades that they are doing to the bikes?

I always wondered who helped them with the motor, and who actually built the Motor for them?

Short hijack:
The engine was based on a Weslake (of England) design: 1386cc (85 CI),50 degree, DOHC, 4-valve heads, offset common crankpin.
http://www.weslake.co.uk/

The 5-speed transmission was supplied by the same company that makes many Yamaha transmissions (can't remember the name). I know the place where the finish machining was done on the engine castings. Assembly took place in Belle Plaine, Minnesota.

I'm well aware of the various mods that have been done to the bikes over the years, though I have no idea what's been done to it. The one above is my second; this one below having been purchased in the crate in August 2000.

very nice white and red bike. I wish they could have made a go of it. Too bad the guys running the place spent money like they were a big company. Massive truck fleets, big parties, etc. before they ever even produced a bike.
