Hello, New to the forum just bought my 99 M2 last week. so far love the bike but have a few questions. First its got 22k on it, but one problem is when i down shift agressivly it smoke like oil smoke, quite a bit. But it doesnt do it all the time. no smoke on start up or when gettin on it. Just down shifting. I figured this must be valve seals? the other thing is the bike has a leaking rear jug base gasket, so i figure if im pulling the heads and jugs i might as well do a rebuild. but wiesco and je pistons only list piston kits for X1's And S3's. Whats Different about the pistons? Thanks in advanced

If you pull the WRIST PIN leaving the PISTON in the "CYLINDER" the rings will be fine !!!

Why make a SIMPLE JOB so complicated ???

I'de keep riding and get to know the bike a little better. What color is the smoke?
Black smoke is fuel. Blue oil.

Smoke on the down shift is often valve guide seals. If it's not excessive - you may want to enjoy your riding season (New Hampshire?) and resolve during the winter.
A good practice before you disassemble the engine would be to do a compression test and a leak-down test. If properly done (rocker arms/pushrods removed) at TDC, BDC, and mid stroke (crank locked) can confirm the condition of the ring package-to-cylinder fitment. Also, done correctly, you can determine valve/valve seat condition.
If you do the leakdown before you disassemble to check/replace the valve guide seals - you'll know if you should go further. If the leakdown test results are good - Buellistic's advice of leaving the piston/rings in the cylinder during base gasket replacement is a great approach. You should probably replace the removed wristpin clips.

yes im from new hampshire. i fully intend to ride for the season and tear down this winter. it is a whitish blue smoke. and with 22k on it im sure it wouldnt hurt to freshen things up. my plan is pistons, cams, and light port work (done by me). ive built a few motors before and i always feel factory cam be improved on.

These engines are performance enhanced from the factory. Obviously a little less so on the M2 Cyclone. You'll never see this power/weight performance out of an HD anything!

Ride it, have fun! Fix in off season.

"so is everyone here anti modify??"

Nope do as you wish,if it were mine I'd mic the jugs/pistons and if in spec hone and a set of new rings, check valve stem to guide clearance and install new guide seals.

IIRC all tuber Thunderstorm motors use the same pistons, if you want to get more poop in the mid to upper rpm range at the sacrifice of some low end install a set of X1/S3 cams.

Yah, I want to eventually go with a 1250 kit! Maybe valve job and switch to beehives/7mm? Nothing much, cause I don't want to change the stock M2 cams!
