Hi,

Just wanted to know what shock I have here. I got it with the M2 Cyclone I bought as a spare. But it looks like the adjustment on the remote reservoir is different on this spare than the one on my bike.

Well I found a picture of a WP shock with that reservoir. Maybe it was reused on the newer style Showa shock.

That may be a reservoir put on from a rebuilt from race tech. I thought I saw a post on here where someone got a rebuild and race tech put on a reservoir that had the knob on it.

The first shock was the original WP. It was recalled and replaced with the first recall shock (the second one in the pic).

Then, this first recall shock (second in pic) was recalled. As a stop gap measure, and to save money on the recalls, these were fitted with a collar arrangement that prevented total collapse of the rear end if the shock failed. If the owner refused this collar thing or if the so fitted shock failed within one year then the shock was replaced with the second recall shock (bottom shock in picture).

As an added complication, the M2 models weren't originally fitted with remote reservoir shocks when new but some got them when shocks were changed under the recall arrangements, as dealers didn't seem to match the shocks to the corect bike models.

Hence you can see X1's with no remote reservoir and M2's with them : (

Your shock does seem to be a bit of a Frankenstein model though, and without knowing the history of exactly who has done what I would be a little suspicious of it, particularly as it is the first recall type anyway : (

Can't say for sure but I read this:

This shock was delivered with a spring too weak for setting preload correctly for rider weights over 200 lbs., and valving that was insufficient for anything other than medium weight riders at moderate levels of riding. Heavier riders, two up riding and/or touring with luggage pushed the shock past its design capacity. To its credit, several suspension specialty companies can and will modify this shock to suit the heavier load rates and more aggressive riding. This shock did, however, suffer some race related failures that caused Buell to recall it in 1999. Buell replaced the WP shock with a Showa, which can be identified by the chrome can enclosing the preload spring and the configuration of the rear arm.

Well, you're probably in good shape then. I've heard good things about Lindeman Engineering.

I have the first recall shock but it never received the clamshell update. Not sure what to think of it really....

For the sake of those new to Buells - and Just to add some long-winded clarity to the shock recalls...
Using Imaposer's photo attachment as a reference, the top shock was early WP shock the was the basis for the first Buell shock Recall # 0817.
The first shocks used as the replacements in 0817 (95-98 Tube frame) were the second (middle) shock in the photo - the early Showa. In the first recall (0817) the early Showa experienced frequent leakage issues - but was not recalled (or fit with the Shock Retention Package clamshell device) in that application. If a 95-98 Buell has a Showa shock (either early or late style) the recall has been performed.

Recall 0820 involved 1999-2000 tube frames and originally used the SRP clamshell device as the resolution. Later, the bottom shock in the photo became the replacement for the 0820 recall and also superseded the early Showa as the replacement shock for the 0817 Recall.
The Showa failures in 0820 were specific to the 99-2000 application and the shock would not experience the "shock eye" failure when used on a 1995-98 Buell.

So, I don't have to worry about the shock eye failure and don't need the clamshell retention device. I just have to look forward to it leaking... Nice!

When it leaks you can get a Works Performance or Penske and not worry about any of this except to add to your knowledge base.
