I need to match up a hard bag cover, for the Amazon Green Metallic. Our PPG source has the code for the green (DBC-48449), but does anyone know, what base coat, and/or top coat is needed? I sanded the cover a bit, and it appears to have a white base coat/primer under the green. | ||

Thanks for the info, and it corresponds to a chart I've downloaded. My question is: Does the DBC91679 Base coat, and the DBC91680 top have to be used, with the DBC48449 as the mid coat? My supplier was unable to come up with a formula to mix the DBC91680 shown, too. He thought it had been changed to DBC91679/1, and DBC91679/2. I've seen so many changes in PPG product through the years, nothing surprises me. Thoughts, anyone? Thanks. | ||

my thoughts are that if you have the paint. Paint it. If you are that concerned about a bag lid matching then your painter will probably be doing the job a few times anyway. If you let him paint it at least he will have an idea of what he needs to do second or third time to appease you. Or... Paint it green and ride it. Catastrophe averted. See how easy life can be. | ||

I'm the painter, and the bike is 2000 miles away in AZ. Riding it is no problem....I suppose I could just throw the bags away, too, and hang some milk crates on it. I'm just trying to get the paint right on a very nice Buell. | ||

I am with Thylacine on this. Has the original paint faded? If so, following PPG's direction will get you the original color but not the color it is now... Don't you painter guys have swatches to match anything and everything? | ||

I feel a little silly offering a painter painting advise, but here goes. I don't believe the 97 S3 had translucent paint, as the earlier S2 models had. The base coat shouldn't make that much difference. Can you have the owner send you one of the body parts you are trying to match? Trying some samples might be the only way to know for sure. | ||

Sorry, I misread the question. The pearl topcoat your supplier can't mix, if left off, will surely affect the final color. If he/she thinks it has been replaced with another number(s), can you try samples of each one, and see if the results are close? Exactly matching the paint on these older Buells is a bit of a trick. The paint on mine is obsolete, but I can get close. Fortunately, it isn't in bad shape. A few nicks here and there. | ||

And you know, I'm not really sure the S2 models had translucent paint either. Mine looks blue and purple and black all at once, depending on how the light strikes it. I assumed it was. | ||

I'm the owner, too. The paint is likely to have faded some, but it's always been garaged, so it can't be too bad. The cover fell off the bike on a city street, and got scratched up, is all. If it's not a candy type paint, it'll make things easier. | ||

I appreciate the advice, from all, by the way. I'm not a professional painter, but have painted dozens of bikes in my day. After screwing up a cafe seat on a '76 RD400 back in '78, by using the wrong base coat (rookie error), I've always tried to get it right the first time. My PPG dealer is very good, but they just aren't motorcycle guys..... |
