Welcome to Badweb Rudy,

Problem was/is your oil was filled while the bike was cold.

Now the bike is overfilled and blows the cap off the oil res when you start it, due to all the oil pumping out of the bottom of the crankcase and returning to its proper storage area.

This is kind of a right of passage for new owners. Sometimes old owners forget about this too, if they've parked the bike for a long time, or if the check valve used to work and has stopped somewhere along the way. You should never add oil to a cold Buell/XL engine because the oil frequently drains out of the res into the crankcase while the bike is sitting and gives a false low reading when cold.

You also should not ever, EVER change the oil on a cold motor for the same reason, except that you are even more likely to overfill it and blow oil all over yourself, your garage, and of course, your bike.

Primary should not have any more than enough oil to just touch the bottom of the clutch basket when the bike is on the sidestand. Check it by removing the clutch inspection cover, also called the derby cover. There should not be enough to spill out. Though a little is not out of the ordinary. If it pours out you have either over filled there (probably through the primary chain inspection cover) or have a bad crankshaft seal, allowing oil to pass from the motor into the primary.

If you don't have a manual basic ops like check oil and primary fluid, setting primary chain tension and adjusting the shift mechanism and such can be done using the S1 manual located in the knowledge vault, just scroll down, nearly to the bottom of the link where it says "Service Manual - Buell S1 Lightning Service Manual":

Ha-ha, when I did it it didn't pop the cap out so much as just push it and then bubble and spew oil out the reservoir.

Many others here have documented the cap popping out and even spraying the garage ceiling if the cap comes off with enough pressure.

If your transmission vent is spewing oil, you could have condensation in the primary, or possibly water from accidentally hosing down the opening in the vent tube while washing the bike with the seat off (don't ask) or you might have a crank gasket leak which is letting engine oil pump past it and over filling your primary.

Also, with the engine hot, after just having shut it off, you shouldn't have oil more than half way between the low and high fill marks. If you're at the full mark, you're going to puke oil.
