I'm stripping down my 2000 X1 and putting the old girls guts and glory into a mutant hardtail frame.

My problem lies in: #1 the bike has been dormant for the last 5 years while I have been stationed in Okinawa, JP; #2 I'm gonna be making her into a carb breather.

Any suggestions on carbs and upgrades? Also any ideas on immediate necessity replacement engine parts (i.e. gaskets) so I can at least have her running for the tail of summer before I strip her down for paint and polish?

Plus for you guys ... with the exception of the parts that made her the limited edition and the aluminum tail the parts will be available for sale.

I can't believe there isn't a glut of those out of date and out of style choppers and chopper conversions out on the market right now. They are probably selling for pennies on the dollar. Buying one of those and modifying it will be less ork, and might even be cheaper.

This might get real interesting...

I don't like it, but I can understand someone wanting to build a chopper with a Buell heart. But stripping a limited edition model?

I tend to agree with Serial and Reep - there are SO many of these Mutants already built and neglected - save one of them rather than killing another Buell. And if you must build, there has got to be a pile of cheap and hopped up sportsters kicking around.

You may perceive this as hate, but keep in mind this is a Buell forum, not a chopper forum.

Good luck with your build.

+1 to what Reep said, i've actually been trying to follow the sales of any mutants i come across, there are a few constantly on ebay and CL. Most asking prices seem to be around 7-10k, but i don't really think they're moving. And all the ads seem to be worded similarly, about how fast and awesome they are, yet the owners don't seem to be holding on to them, and the resale just doesn't seem to be there. Maybe they are finally realizing the err in their ways. Hopefully this fad is over soon, as the cafe racer fad seems to be picking up steam now...

Xtra, I've got a 2001 XL1200C with all the chrome and buell heads and pistons. I have been wanting to trade for an S3T but I'm willing to consider yours to keep you from destroying it. I'm in NorCal 20 miles east of Sacramento.

Ok I posted here knowing that it would be mostly negative, and I'm glad to see that there were a couple willing to help. For those fretting over the limited edition it was the red w/ white stripes and #186 (or 96??? it's been 5 yrs since I've been back home for more than a week to get a chance to really look it over).

This was more for the help of getting her running for one more summer before the end, but Ducley you may have given me a viable alternative to killing my first love.

The new bike was going to be more of a tribute to the bike I fell in love with and bought brand new at 19. Now at 30 I'm lookin for more of a bar hopper than a knee dragger. It's not an age thing just a little taste change.

Not wanting to start any thing but I wish people could learn to let others have their opinion. It may not be my choice or your choice but he owns it. I am sure I will get hated upon for the mods I have done or my paint from some but it's mine not yours so agree to disagree and respect others!

Xtra, get home, get it running, and ride it for awhile. You might just change your tune. Guarantee you'll be the only one at the bar with that bike. These are collectors items now after all.

get the mikuni HSR 42-11 EZ kit.

If you want a bar hopper why not just buy a bar hopper? Unless you are vertically challenged the bar crowd will tease you riding a sporty and you may end up with a big twin HD to fit in.

Every Buell that gets parted out makes our Buells a tiny bit rarer and more valuable.

I agree with BlackM2 - get it running and ride it a bit. No way in hell a mutant is going to ride or handle anywhere near as good as the X1 frame will.

You could always tweak the Sportster. I must admit being 6ft/300lbs, that the sporty feels a little small for me too. And yes it needs a bath.

Tribute??? That's kind of like smashing Robert Plant's head open (who can still sing, just as your bike can still ride), taking his brain and shoving it up Justin Beiber's ass and calling it a Tribute Band, lol. Just sayin'.

Seriously though, no hate, you just have a pile of folks who would rather you keep it whole, including me.

S1 is right and you're free to do whatever you want with it, just as we're all free to not like it, haha. But at the end of the day it is YOUR bike and not ours.

OK guys, you have talked me into at least what I think is a sensible decision. I'll wait till I get home in May, get her rolling. If no spark is rekindled I will post her for sale here first.

If anyone wants to make offers now before I put work into her let me know. I don't have any pictures that I can give you as all the ones I had of the bike were either on my old US cell or on reg film and not digital.

I have a ride when I get back so there will be no harm no foul in selling her outright before I get to wrench on her a bit.

Hurrah!
Here's something to look at; Chopping up the buell would cost money.... a few grand at least... Lets say you were real smart and did a lot of work yourself you would easily spend between $3-5,000.
Now, you should be able to get a few grand for your X1 in good-running condition, less if not. So take the money that you get for the buell and the money you would have spent on chopping it~ that gives you $6-8,000.
You can buy nice used sportsters all day long at that price with money left over.
My best friend just bought a barely used Sportster from a dealer in that price range. It's a sweet little bike and a perfect barhopper.

As someone who had never owned a street bike until 2/24/12 (I always wanted a Buell) and who thought it might be cool to buy an old Buell and build a mutant chopper out of it, I now understand why these are special bikes, since I have gotten an S3T and fallen in love with it.

Everywhere I go, it is stared at. It's not a lowriding chopper or a dressed out bagger, but it is still eye catching and different in such an attention getting way that I can't now imagine chopping it up. Just this past Sunday when my Father-in-law and I were out riding, we stopped for gas and folks would walk by fixated on my $4K Buell and didn't seem to notice his 2012 chromed out bagger!

The previous owner thought that way, too. He had lots of people wanting this bike, but he knew I wanted a Buell because I could talk about them based on my infatuation w/the S1 when it first arrived in the 90's. He held the bike for me until I made up my mind and had a chance to travel to ride it. That was his way of protecting the species and his baby. I like knowing that I own a piece of motorcycling history that will never return. Buells, especially tubers, are an endangered species and are worth protecting.

I hope I never have to sell mine, but if I do, I will do what I can to make sure it goes to a good home where it will be cherished for it's pedigree and not it's parts.

25 years in the Air Force, still in and love it! Buells saved 2, Buells destroyed..ZERO. Ive also got a Big Dog Chopper, a hell of a lot more cubic inches than either of my Buells. want a chopper? buy a Big Dog, dont destroy a buell.... thats my vote

so whats the status of the red with white stripes bike?

When I came home from Vietnam in 1970, I had 3 Indian motorcycles sitting in my garage, a 1918 power plus,a 1941 scout, and a 1928 scout. I sold them. Got $500 for the power plus,$80 for the 41 scout and I swapped the 28 for a car. Silly me.
They are worth a fortune today.
The x1 is a pain in the butt, literally. Bloody uncomfortable.
Thanks Erik for my crushed balls. But, take it from an old-timer,you'll be sitting on a fortune in the future if you invest in it.
