Just picked up a nice set of PM rims for my X1 and was wondering what size tires for front and rear will fit. From what I read I think the rear can take a 180/55 and not sure on the front 120/55. Can someone verify these sizes? Thanks | ||

without a manual in front of me, I wouldn't want to comment all the exact dimensions front and rear, but the main difference between PM and cast wheels is that the PM were designed to take a 180 rear. Cast were designed to take a 170, although most people still run a 180 on them. | ||

Ihave ridden both a 180 and a 170 on my PM rims. I prefer the 170 as the 180 make the bike more difficult to turn. It's not to the point of causing a major issue, but I did notice it. | ||

I run 190/55/r17 on the rear (stock is 180/55/r17) And 120/55/r17 on the front! | ||

Mine came stock with a 170 on the PM rim. I too have noticed that it handles a bit better with a 170 vs. a 180, even with the 5.5 inch PM rim. A 180 barely clears the belt. | ||

my 98 S1W still had the stock tires on it when I got it (2700 miles) and even with the PM's it came with a 170 rear...that's what went back on it....anyone want the dryrotted stockers lol | ||

I run a 190. But I most agree a 170. Even on the 5.5 inch rim best suits the bikes handling. | ||

To open another can of worms - I will be buying tires this spring and the selection in the 170/60-17 is small compaired to the 180/55-17. How do you get a 190/55-17 to clear the belt? I was looking at my clearance with a 170 in place - about 8mm gap between tire and belt. | ||

For some reason it fits fine. Never even sort of rubbed. I have heard it doesn't work for some. | ||

For the 190 or 200 you would be looking at a chain drive conversion | ||

Would that be a PM? I run a 190 on a cast wheel and have never had a rub on the belt. | ||

Depends on the tire manufacturer. My 97 S1 PMs came stock with a 170. I've put a 180 on it and it works fine but the pegs and kickstand drag before I get to the edge of the tire so it's really too large. I wouldn't try a 190 unless you really don't ride aggressively. I have a 190 metzler with pm wheel and stock belt fits fine rides fine look at my profile pic its on there. Really you are talking a couple MM between the 180 and 190 i just looked at them side by side it is very small diffrence | ||

In terms of tires, I thought the 170 was overall width in millimeters. So if my tire to belt gap is 8mm with a 170 tire (on a 5 inch wide rim) then putting a 180 tire (on a 5.5 inch wide rim) should have a 3mm tire to belt gap. What is the tire to belt gap and rim width of you that have 190 tires on? | ||

S1wl... The 170 is for the full circumference including the sidewall. That's what the /55/ or /50/ changes. This is the reason your simple math won't work. The overall profile of the tire makes a difference in the width between one 180 to another 180 manufacturer too. There can be probably 3mm-5mm difference with the "same size". | ||

Also, squeezing a 190 onto a rim that's too small for it will keep the tire narrower as well. It will also give it a goofy tread profile with a flatter center and more curved shoulders. |
