My bike runs out of gas after 3 gallons. I put it on reserve and it runs fine. My question is i thought the 01 Cyclone tanks were 5 gallons? Reserve a little under a gallon? Where is the other gallon? PO painted the tank. Possible they assembled it wrong?

The tank holds 5 gallons. Take out your petcock and inspect it. I suspect part of the screen is blocked with sealant or paint or crud or something.

And don't over-torque it putting it back in - if you strip the brass nuts in the tank it will be near impossible to fix and render the tank useless.

No, they don't hold a full five gallons, i mean, they probably hold that much total volume of air if empty... but if you don't want your fuel trying to get past gas cap gaskets and stuff you've only got about 4.5 gallons. I bought a 98 S3T tank trying to get an extra half gallon of fuel (5.5 gal) but it still runs out of gas before I want to stop riding.

The little tube inside the screen is the main fuel "tank" supply; when you flip to reserve it just draws the rest out of the tank. So you can trim the tube a bit to extend your pre-reserve fuel supply. I think my bike had more 1 1/2 or 1/4 gallon or so for reserve before I trimmed mine.

The small early S1 style tank was a 3 gallon tank, the manta tank was roughly five. Here's the earlier small tank:

S1/M2 tank

Here's the Manta tank, just to clarify:

From what I understood, gas can get trapped on the right side when the level is lower than the tunnel. Like in the front right Manta mandible.
One has to lean the bike far to the left so the trapped gas will pour over the tunnel, into the side with the petcock, in order to utilize the full capacity.

I had the same problem and just pulled the petcock and cut about an inch off the tube and it was much better.

Super. I could not believe how long that tube was (2001 M2L). My friends or I would ride it and it would start bucking or killing way to soon and I use the odometer for fill ups so I knew it had plenty of gas. Well it finally happened too much. That's when I pulled it thinking it was obstructed and found the tube length was way to long. By resetting the odometer each fill up I never have to use the reserve and can plan ahead, plus it helps figuring mileage but then again whom really cares about that part. I usually figure gas at 125-150 miles.

I really care about that part Bert. I almost bought a SuperHawk instead of my Buell, then I saw the fuel mileage and canceled the deal.

It's great that we have "high performance" bikes and get great gas mileage besides. Another nice feature that helped me choose Buell over Ducati, Triumph, and Honda.
