Is the Pro Series (Supertrapp Internal Disc muffler) appreciably quieter than the Race System? I'm looking for something with less volume for my S3T - the race system is awesome but gets a little old after a full day in the mountains. I had a 2:1 supertrapp on my Sportster a few years back and remember it being suprisingly quiet, and that was an external disc, so I'm hoping the IDS is quiter still. When was the last time you repacked the muffler? Mine is much quieter since repack. | ||

I packed it about 10kmi ago with the American Sport Bike kit. Doesn't sound any louder than it was after repacking it. | ||

Uhhh... well, I guess I'll find out, haha. Was watching a Buell-branded supertrapp, new in box on ebay... bidding went up to $387 and still has time left (I'd have been willing to go a little higher). Another one just popped up for buy it now for $379 so I snatched it up... might have overpaid, but the brandy new ones from supertrapp are no less than $430 shipped so I must have done at least okay. *edit* - well. looks like this guy has sold two in the last month for $339 and $349... so... not the best price, but not the worst either, I guess. I haven't tried the Race can yet, but my IDS SuperTrapp experience was as you described, "Wow!" when I first wrung it out, and then the sound level got to me. I took out a bunch of discs, and it got just a tad bit quieter, but completely lost the "Wow". It weighed within 1/2 pound of the stock muffler. So, sold the Trapp. I have a Race Can that needs repacking before I try it, but since then I got a Drummer, a ceramic-coated X1 header and an air/fuel gauge, so now I'm gonna go a different direction, try the Db-Reducer that Drummer now has available. | ||

Hmm... well, I guess we'll see how it goes. If it's still too noisy on long trips I'll just get a stock muffler for it. | ||

The IDS is quieter than the race muffler in my experience. I can't remember how mine was set up on the old M2, but if you put a solid end disc on it, it will get even quieter. But, unless you have a stock header...it won't fit. It is NOT made to fit the race header, only the stock one. It was a slip-on upgrade, not a full system. | ||

Thanks Rat, I did know that... seems finding a stock header with the O2 bung is harder than the pro-series muffler. I was planning on using a closed end cap. On my Sportster, it came with a closed cap and I decided it was too quiet and added an open one, so I'm crossing my fingers on this working out. | ||

The IDS can be a little "boomy", but I loved it on my M2. You can use any late "T" style header. If you get one from an M2 or other carbureted bike...just have a speed shop weld in an O2 sensor bung. Take them your race header so they put it in the right place (yes, it matters), but it's a standard part. | ||

I found one in Milwaukee on CL for a good price, but haven't heard back from the guy. There's 2 on eBay right now, both for an M2 and both well over $200, which is way too much. | ||

I dunno...if you can't find em anywhere, I'd say $200 isn't too bad. Same header, just no bung. | ||

Well, the muffler came today and it looks freaking fantastic - brand new, just as they said. Love that it's stamped "Buell Pro-Series" rather than Supertrapp... I know it's the same thing but I just like that this is the Buell accessory version, and for less money even. So... How many discs are guys running in these things? The documentation that came with it suggests 10-12 for EFI bikes, but I'm not sure if that's assuming the stock ECM and I have the race ECM... Looks like my current race system did away with the stock Z-bracket, so I went ahead and ordered one of those to use with the new muffler. I also worked out a deal with Tone for a stock header so I'm good to go on this swap. I suppose now I should jus gett the engine back together. | ||

I have been running 15 disks in mine because that was how many that I had. NRHS has a dyno chart comparing different number of disks. About 18-22 was best I believe for dyno results but that will vary with other factors. They are a well built muffler. | ||

My new-to-me header showed up yesterday as did a NOS z-bracket, so I now have everything I need (minus the high-temp RTV to install the muffler with). I may through the race system on at first so I can get a good comparison, and I may even write a little article on my website about the two exhausts. Seems you always hear a lot of people assuming the Pro-Series and the Race system are the same thing... | ||

How about recording a sound clip of the two while you're at it? Maybe a little timed acceleration test (nothing illegal of course!) assuming a comparo-dyno test isn't likely. An 8th-mile, or time-to-top-speed, anything sort of measurable would be more than we have now. | ||

Probably won't bother with any performance measurements as I don't have the time, patience or consistancy to do them well. What I do have is some good recording gear to accurate sounds of each pipe, so I can record the sound and volume levels of each. | ||

Wassup fellas, I just picked up a M2L Cyclone and it is completely stock! I have had XBs in the past that I have modified the stock exhuast. I haven't been able to find anyone that has opened up a tuber exhaust and modified. I'm a welder/fabricator so cut and chop is easy for me. | ||

Hey Goody, too bad you're so far away, I had some ideas I'd like to explore, and I DON'T have welding gear. There's a 'cutaway' drawing of the stock muffler in the hardcover book about Buells, and there are a few places where people have posted pictures of them cutting open a muffler. The Drummer company, KDFab, is both a sponsor, and one of the best-known places that modifies or 'opens-up' the stock muffler. I think there's even some pictures here of a Drummer cut open for viewing. So, go for it... Take pictures! | ||

Jayvee, I modified a few XB mufflers and all Drummer does is pull the guts out and insulate/pack the insides with a metal perf core about 1" smaller in diameter than inside dimensions of XB exhaust. I still have one laying around somewhere. I put a 2"stainless perfcore straight through the exhaust and left internals empty. Good sound and not obnoxious. I want to do the same with the M2 exhaust. |
