I want to adjust the preload on my 2000 X1. I went to my local dealership that has an American Sport Bike shock tool for 2000 and earlier Buells but my bike has the recalled shock so it didn't fit. Before I order one from American Sport Bike does anyone have a quick way of doing this without ordering the tool?
Thanks

Yes. Wish I had a pic. I don't know what the tool is called... but I got mine from Sears. It's simply a sturdy plastic handle with a heavy duty, thick rubber strap. You wrap it around whatever you want to turn, in this case, the shock itself, pull the strap tight, and turn away... in either direction. Works much more quickly than the wrench that fits the nut... is much cheaper, and doesn't mar the surface of the shock either. I used to use the wrench that turns the nut, but I am anal about having the preload set correctly when adding (or deleting!) a passenger... I was adjusting just about every other day and got tired of messing with the wrench. The rubber strap thingie (oh... that's what it's called!) is MUCH better. IMHO

There ya go! Thanks, Henrik! Great tool! Just don't buy a smaller one... the strap is too small/pliable and will tend to stretch rather than turn the shock. I bought mine in a set... one large, one small. The small one never sees the light of day.

Thanks for the tip and the link. I'll pick one up this weekend.
