Lost one of the 4x5/16-18 button-head bolts, so I priced them at the H-D shop. $9.63 ea but I'd have to special order a lot of 5. Poop! Then I'd have to special order the squarish rubber O-ring washer which is $2.68 and buy a lot of 10. Dubble-Poop! $75+ bucks is crazy looney just to replace one bolt, but then this is H-D, and these aren't even chrome! I would have a lot of spares though  So I headed to a good hardware store and found 4x5/16-18 socket head bolts for $2.40 ea and a thick O-ring, round cross section not square for $0.70. They also had button heads but only 1 1/2" long. The socket head bolts unfortunately become a rather industrial looking setup, not quite as nice looking as the stock button heads. So I'd like to find a place where I could buy the correct bolts but not at $9.63. Anybody have any luck getting these locally, not necessarily H-D? | ||

Hey, Sparky, did you try McMaster? http://www.mcmaster.com Part number: 92949A592 They have it in stainless steel, button head for $7.64 for a pack of five. Not my favorite choice because--as I'm sure you know--stainless corrodes badly in aluminum. Unfortunately that's all they have in button-head in that size and length. | ||

Seems the local hardware stores have lengths in increments of 1/2 inch. I need some bolts 1 1/4 inch for example. Boltdepot has it, a great selection there, but UPS cost is ridiculous. Even USPS Express could mail is for 1/3 of UPS. Cheapest to just cut it down myself. But at least I'm getting better at filing the starting threads on the tip. | ||

Jayvee: When I have to cut a bolt, I mount two nuts on it then put it in a vise, spin down the correct die on it before the cut, cover with some duct tape. After the cut, spin off the die and your threads will be in great shape. I have to do it at work all the time for corroded bolts that aren't re-usable. BTW Westlake Hardware near my church has lots of chrome too. | ||

Thanks guys. McMaster and Boltdepot are great online sources. It looks like I could order 2 bolts from boltdepot for quite a bit less than what H-D is asking.  | ||

After looking up these bolt places, found out there's a Fastenal store 5 minutes away from my work. Haven't been there yet, will go this Friday I guess. No shipping charge at least. Usually if I can't find the correct head and the bolt head is going to show I'll paint it the part color or black and it changes the look from "industrial" to "good enough to suit me". |
