I'm new to this site and Buell's. I was actually looking to buy a Firebolt but wasn't finding one that fit the bill. By chance I stopped in a small shop in Swannanoa, NC and this S2 was one of 4 bikes for sale. I could'nt leave without it. I paid $3500 and they threw in a ~$200 new helmet, so from what I have read this seems like a fair deal. It is absolutely the best looking bike I have ever seen. I may need to re-jet the carb but for now everything seems great. Not quite as fast as I expected but seems very fun none the less.

Thanks!!

The last 4 numbers are 0556.

I'll try and get some side pics later tonight when I get home. There are 16000 miles on the bike. From what I can tell it looks like a previous owner has either really done a good job keeping it clean or he has gone through it very thoroughly. I don't know if any internal modifications were done. The muffler is a V&H. At 3300 RPMs it seemed a little lean and coughed a little and at 5500 RPMs it seem to change a little but I only hit that high once so I'm not sure what that was. I noticed that the pilot jet had be uncovered so it could be adjusted. I turned it out 1/2 a turn more (total of 4 1/4 turns) and the 3300 RPM condition seemed better. But I'm probably making it sound worse than it is cause it really appears to run pretty smooth.

Rubbin,

If you are looking for some other Bueller's in your area to go riding with, help you understand the uniquities of your new S2, or otherwise share Buell experiences with check out C3 (Carolina Corner Carvers).

We're spread out all over NC, with some satellite *members* in the adjoining states, but there are some of us that are very close to you.

Welcome!

Be careful of that rear header, it doesn't have its heat shield. Knee burner.

1313, I would be very interested in seeing some other bikes like mine. I may not be able to make the October meet this year but hopefully the next event I will.

Here are some more shots from the other side.

Cam and primary covers are not original; original were polished, not black powdercoat.

Front pulley cover, as noted.

Stock header from an S1 or early M2, V&H muffler. Stock S2 headers were 2" but had a rear exit; this one has a side-facing exit.

Late-model chrome "Buell" decals

Aftermarket signals

ORIGINAL PRE-RECALL FRONT BRAKE ROTOR. NICE!!

Recall shock.

Intake/breather assembly.

Painted rear hugger (I reallyREALLY hope they didn't paint a carbon fiber original...)

Trimmed undertail

Look like maybe thunderstorm heads and cylinders? Either that or they were powdercoated same time as the covers; stock had aluminum "highlights" on the fin edges, yours are all black.

They aren't speed demons (stock, they had BONE STOCK Sportster engines), but they are dead-sexy and serious handling machines.

Mine is below. I have a Works Performance rear shock; updated sideplates; an EBC front rotor; and a Corbin seat visible in the right side shot (and a GPS mount on the right bar). Everything else is stock in this shot:

Great score. Awesome color ; ) Welcome to the sickness!!!

I like your well hidden extra lights in the front, my dad did something similar on his BMW K75.

Wow you really picked out alot on my bike from those not so good pictures. How would I know if the heads and cylinders are Thunderstorm or original?

The more I ride it the faster it seems, it actually seems to really come alive from 3500 and up. It still has more grunt down low than anything else I've rode.

Should I be worried or be on the lookout for anything with that pre-recall front rotor?

Hey Ratbuell

It looks like somebody vandalized your bike by scratching or scribbling on the right side lower fairing.

As Ratbuell said, Thunderstorms were black. So unless the PO painted them...

It would not be surprising to see T'storms installed, considering the other mod's performed (intake, exhaust, nice breather/catch can assembly, is that a Mikuni carb?

The carb has the HD symbol on it but it has the K for Keihin on it also.

Is there a stamping or alternative mounting boss on the heads and cylinders as an identifier?

The block has the matching VIN number on it.

I'm confused about the "ORIGINAL PRE-RECALL FRONT BRAKE ROTOR".

Looks like a stock S2 front rotor to me. I don't recall any recalls for the S2 front brake rotor.

The top hats with C/E clips for the 1997(?) setup, YES! But this was only due to highly trained H-D techs not being able to install the C/E clip reliably. If installed properly, they worked GREAT!

Ratbuell - please un-confuse me!

Also 1998 Thuderbolt had that front 2 1/2 " collector header.I,d bet it,s a Thunderstormed motor or a 1998 motor, lightning or Thunderbolt engine. from other side header looked like a race header.Vance Hines has a nice Quiet Deep Tone.

Brankin - I thought all the "sandwiched" rotors were recalled and exchanged for the later-style flush-mount carrier design. I think you have the right reason...but thought it went from "product improvement" to "recall" at some point. IIRC there were three generations of tuber front brakes - the "stacked" original S2 (recalled?) style; the removable-screw/interchangable-carrier-but-needs-wave-washers style; and the last "pop-rivet" non-interchangable style. Perhaps Mr. Canfield can set us(me) straight...

Ebutch - that is NOT a race header. All race headers have the lower elbow as part of the header, and the collector is pointed to the rear of the bike. In the shot of the left side, the elbow is clearly part of the muffler. And to my not-recently-calibrated eye, that's too skinny to be 2.5". It's a stock S1W, early M2, non-thunderstorm header. Also, I don't think any thunderstorm headers will fit the S2 frame and air filter. The only way to put a 2.5" collector on an S2 - I *think* - is to get an S2 race header.

This is on my M2, but it is a Buell race header and muffler. You can see primary tubes that extend all the way to the forward mount (the green arrow), and the rear-facing collector (red arrow).

It's a Keihen carb with a chrome accessory top on Rubbin's bike.

Rubbin - you're right..I forgot to mention my PIAA lights. Sorry ; ) And there's a part number on the heads...but you'll have to wait till its time for rockerbox gaskets before you can check them.

JP - yeah, that's what I get for taking the bike to East Troy...damn vandals, just can't have anything nice!
