I just bought new seals and I want to put them on.

How do I remove the inlets for the breathers? Are they threaded or do the pop off or what? I wanted to check on here before I did anything dumb.

The bolt holes are open sided, you loosen the bolts and wiggle the manifold up and out. sometimes you can do it with all the bolts in, usually you need two out, and sometimes it is easier to remove all four. The manifold is just pressed against the heads by the bolts.

Justin:You must Buy Factory Shop manual and parts Book!!!!!And ask here Too.There are real Lightning Pro,s here. You need Offset Allen wrench kind of an S pateren.Size1/4" Opps!!!!Right theaded !3/4" deep socket and when installing do not over tighten. Steel to alum threads and liquid teflon Threads.This though me off two questions title though me off thought one Question.

If your talking about the two head breather bolts connected by hose or steel line, they are threaded, similar to banjo type fittings.

Ahhh intake seals!! A buell right of passage! Very easy once you have done it a couple of times. Tricky but easy.

As Ebutch says, get the shop manual.

From my '01 X-1 manual, which will be at least similar:

On the primary cover side, loosen but do not remove the bolts. On the gearcase side, remove the two bolts. BTW, Al at American Sport Bike has a special wrench that makes this easier. Slide the manifold out the right side of the frame.

The intake manifold flanges ARE NOT interchangeable. They should be marked F and R. Put in the new seals, and reassemble. Tighten the bolts to 6-10 ft/lbs. Done! (You have a torque wrench, right?)

Oops...I'm not sure I noticed that

For sure that 'special' wrench was only useful for about 1/4 of bolt-twisting necessary.

Next time I do it, I will almost certainly put some regular hex-head grade 8 bolts in there.

Unless anyone can explain the rationale for socket-heads. I can't see any right now...

removal was a breeze. Install was easy until I cross threaded on of the bolts on the cylinder because of the ball end that you have to use. NOW WHAT?

Remove everything, stuff rags in the intake ports and chase the buggered threads with a 5/16x18 tap, then reassemble more carefully.

Cross threaded?? Didn't you start the bolts with your fingers first? That sucks!

I have the special tool from American Sport Bike but a cut off allen wrench seems to be a bit better fit if you cut it just right. Ive done intake seals enough times that i now have 3 of these chopped allen wrenches.

a garbage disposal wrench works perfect, and can be had at a hardware store for cheap.

And smear lube all over the seals so they stay pliable longer. We use Sil-Glyde--made for lubing seals. And replace the two back allens with bolts, front ones have to be allens.

If it's a Tube-frame, M2, do they still have to be allen-head? I can't tell why from looking at it. That's not an XB thing?

got it tapped and back on. thanks guys! unfortuntely the seals didnt fix my problem. the bike still wont stay running. trying the fuel filter tomorrow
