Glad to help.

Hell. Talking about the ol' girl made me dig 'er out of the garage and take her out for some fun the last couple days. Wonder how she'd do riding to Buelltoberfest and back...hmmmm

Well I have been riding it some more now and I really love the bike. I had a slight problem. The rear brake hose that connects to the reservoir was turned in too much and the tire hugger was slightly biased to the right side and a little loose. Problem is my girlfriend wanted a ride, so she got one, and the extra weight made it ride just a touch lower and the brake-to-reservoir hose contacted the drive belt and sprayed brake fluid all over and on the tire...yikes... and the tire hugger bumped the frame tube so that scratched the perfect paint job. Anyways I'm not sure whats worse the bike problems or me telling my girlfriend that the extra weight did it and, well naturally she then claimed I called her fat.

Everyone says brake cleaner will take care of the fluid on the tire. I'm gonna replace the 1/4 inch tubing for the brake line and zip tie it to the master cylinder so it can't rotate in toward the belt. I tightened the hugger but it still looks close I may have to shim it or something.

BTW.. I can't tell if that hugger is the original carbon one, it seems pretty thick for carbon and the underside is just painted black.

One thing about the heads I noticed is that they are attached at the top with an OEM looking cast bracket. The websites that sell the XB style heads say you gotta change that bracket. I'm not sure if the Thunderstorm heads require that change or not. So I may have the stock heads, but like Ratbuell said I'll just have to check when the rocker covers come off someday.

The Original Thunderstorm motor came in the S1W and later S3 Thunderbolts and mounted the same as the engine in the S2. The XB based Thunderstorm motor has different heads and require the different mounting.

In 1999 Model Year all the TUBE FRAMES came with THUNDERSTORM HEADS ...

The XB heads have basically THUNDERSTORM ports with small stem valves for better flow and the heads and cylinders have more cooling fins ... ...

Ratbuell,
The single S2 front rotor was never recalled. The dual S2 front rotor setup was recalled for being overkill. There are actually a few revisions of front brake rotors with minor differences you left out, but I don't have the time to list them all out over lunch, so they'll have to wait until either tonight or over the weekend. Here's some related info however:
front brake recall

Ivan,
It wasn't your girl's fault about the frame contacting the rear inner fender. There's supposed to be a teflon wear pad on the rear inner fender to lessen the wear from the frame tube due to this contact. Once we started getting feedback of this issue, Erik wasn't too happy when I asked him about the angle callout on that tube on the frame print. Seems it should have been *vertical* rather than the 3° called out on the print. And so nobody worries - if they've thought this far ahead - the frame tube in question was analyzed to be sound structurally in this area if half of the tube ended up getting worn away. I know recently I saw a certain dealers ad on eBay had the teflon pad for sale - and in quantity. Of course, since I am at work, I can't access eBay at the moment. But I think it should still be possible to get one to 'cover up' the damage.

Trip down memory lane!

Awesome, I was already thinking about getting a buell sticker to cover it up and protect it down the road but that would be even better.

That was a mid-year 1995 change if I recall . . I have some of the "test" white pieces.

Tell your GF she isn't fat, the bike is just sprung for teeny bopper passengers...

wait, that might not work.

The windshield is a Gustafsson +4". I know the gold logo on the right side, and I know the windshield:

I like it. Outstanding quality but nearly *too* much wind protection anywhere over 35 degrees ambient when combined with the factory leg lowers.

I ordered the wear pad, and fixed the brake line. Should be good to go next time the girlfriend wants to ride.

Here's the gold marking on the windshield, I can't really make it out but it sounds like Ratbuell nailed it.

...was there ever any doubt...?

On the bottom line, you can see the "gus" before the stylized "T" (looks like steer horns), then the "afsson".

It's a good screen. They make three or four different heights, different tints...and they still produce. Good folks to deal with.

Your bike was a frame-off restore. I like it, I especially like the billet catch can, the black accents in the super-clean sideplates, and the silver frame (surprised no one mentioned on this). I first noticed it when I saw a glare off the fairing support : ).

Ratbuell says "Also, I don't think any thunderstorm headers will fit the S2 frame and air filter. The only way to put a 2.5" collector on an S2 - I *think* - is to get an S2 race header."

That's correct. Before I found a good used race header for my S2 (thanks firemanjim)I used an S3 Race Kit air cleaner with the T-Storm header and V&H pipe.

One way to determine if your heads are original is to have a close look at that front isolator mounting bracket. There are two bolts that secure it to the front cylinder head. On Thunderstorm heads those bolts are the same size. On the original S2 heads the right bolt (iirc) is smaller than the other.

I had to drill a larger hole in the bracket to accommodate the larger bolt when I installed the Thunderstorm top end on my S2.

btw, a T-Storm top end and cams makes a nice mod to the smooth (heavier stock HD flywheels) S2 motor.

p.s. Is there a reason I can't successfully add a linked photo?

The bolt heads are the same size on mine best I can tell visually . Ill have to measure later.

Try a smaller picture. I had to reduce mine for them to post.

Yea just put a wrench on both and they were both 5/8. Unless the bolt head is the same size but the shank is different mine are the same.

They are 7/16".The S2's have a 7/16" on the left and a 5/16" on the right.The 5/16" bolt takes a 9/16" wrench.
Lightning heads also have two 7/16" bolts.

So I either have lightning or T-storm heads... anyway to tell between those two visually from the outside?

So I've read through some old posts and found what I think answers my question.

My heads have the same size bolts on the head mount (5/8 wrench fits both), and my heads also have the extra fin in the middle top. So I think I have Lightning heads.

Reason why I'm so curious, is my bike seems to be not quite up to par on what people are saying an S2 should feel like at 50-100 speeds, and to me it just seems lacking in the mid and upper range. I wanted to figure out what components I had and see if they were badly mismatched or what.

I pulled the carb and discovered this;
idle adjustment was out 4.25 turns and the pilot jet was a 45 and the main jet was a 170!

I ordered a 48 pilot and (190, 195 and 200) main jets from American Sport Bike (along with a new front iso...). I'm gonna try the 48 pilot, idle out 2.5 turns and use the 190 main jet for starters. I think this may be a noticeable difference.

Buellistic, the XB heads are way more than Thunderstorm heads with small stems. Out of the box they flow better than ported Thunderstorm heads. And don't forget the beehive style valve springs.

so Jim, I am assuming that the new XB heads would fit my M2 or S2. What about the push rod tubs, vrs. the XB channel that covers the push rods...would the XB covers fit the tubers, instead of push rod tubes? rex

Keep an eye out for XB heads then. I might be interested in trying this on my m2. I am bringing it to the Quail event and I am thinking of having you and Terry take a look at my m2 and do some tweaking. It has been a while since a dealership has given it a once over, officially.

I might change out the Vance and hines and either go back to stock , or use a super trap, like on my S2.

Rex, they bolt on but you would need a new front mount. Depending on thickness of gaskets you use, you may need a set of .040" under pushrods.

The XB pushrod covers won't fit tuners because they have a different bolt pattern on the bottom.
