Got the S3 going, but she does not sound happy. Smells a little rich and occassional carb farts. I know I have to adjust the mixture screw, so carb has to come off and drill out the plug. According to the FSM, low speed jet is 42 and main in 200. Would I benefit by adding a 45? Does it make sense to try an aftermarket emulsion tube and thinner needle? If I go that route should I go to a 180? Thoughts? |

Definitely go to #45 slow and adjust idle air. Then ride and see. |

Stock exhaust? If so, try a 45 or 48 slow speed jet, .050" shims under the needle, 200 main jet, and 2.5 turns out on the idle mixture screw. If you have a less restrictive exhaust, you might want a larger main jet. That should give you a place to start. |

You're probably very low elevation in Houston right? I can see sea level from very close to my house, and wound up with a 180 Main. Not sure if it's right, don't go full throttle very often. Have Force in and stock exhaust out. I can never remember which way it goes, lower elevation bigger Main number or smaller? |

Thx, will go with the 45 low speed jet and adjust my mix. Not sure about chanting the 200 yet...I know at WOT they run rich. I'd rather foul plugs then run to lean and burn something. |

R850r, I'm right down the highway from you. I'm running 45/200, started 2.5 turns out on idle but have driven that in some, shimmed needle .050". I'm quite happy with it. I'm not an expert but I think it is the correct starting point for you as others have stated. |

Just cured my carb farts with manifold seals. I'd suggest that before investing time and $$ on jets just in case you have an intake leak. |

i just put intake seals on my 96 S1, helped a little but still backfiring through the carb, just at a lower rpm. guess maybe jetting and shimming. |
