My 2000 X1 for an 87 Sporty 1100? Both bikes in good condition. More upgrades on my X1, mostly stock Sporty except for a very nice corbin seat.

I'd rather trade my X1 for a boat anchor.

Why trade down like that?

I would MAYBE trade my X1 for a like-new Victory or Triumph cruiser with similar HP numbers.

An old sporty? No way. The thing is probably slow as molasses.

Ironheads are garbage. Keep your X1... Would you trade a Van gogh for a finger painting? No. Ironheads are a dime a dozen. X1 for a shovel or pan or knuckle or evo I would consider but not an ironhead! Don't do it!!!!

I want a cruiser for a more relaxed ride from time to time. Don't really want to get rid of my X1. Maybe I'll just save up and buy a cheap older sporty.

You can do much better if you look at a comparably priced Japanese bikes. That's if you really want to switch.

I wouldn't do it as a switch. I would do everything to keep the X1 and then I would buy a "more relaxed ride" of your choice. Personally, that choice would be a Moto Guzzi EV1100 (Cali), not a sporty. But YMMV.

Or, for a more relaxed position but a great ride and still the V-Twin you want, why not get an S3(T)?

Anywhere, anytime, Wilson!!!
But a pre-'91 Evo has the alternator on the clutch basket, or some such thing, that causes early and frequent bearing failure, IIRC.

Nothing wrong with a Sporty, but I'd keep the X1. Neither one is worth much in terms of $$s. You should be able to find a used low mileage Sporty for less than $3K.

ymmv

I had a 96 sportster sport, nice bike and the two you are comparing are probably worth the same on blue book. But the 87 is an iron head sportster (I believe) and is sloooow, handles like Poo and is not really any better quality-wise than your X1. If the Sporty is your style of riding, I would sell outright as there are a lot of better XL models out there right now for the money. but it is your stuff, that is only my opinion.

I have both and like both, but an 87 is a bit old IMO. In Washington I have seen Sporty's from the dawn of time through 2005 sell for around $3k. I'd save up and buy the Sporty they aren't hard to find, but if you trade the X1 it may be very hard to replace.

Anything pre-'04 is going to be a paint-shaker, rigid-mount engine. No rubber isolators. Mirrors? Fuggedaboudit.

Spend time on a sporty before you make the change. If you want relaxed, I'm guessing that means forward controls...and they DRAG in even moderate turns. Low, wide...contact. They shake like crazy. Peanut tanks...well, do you like stopping for gas every 80 miles?

Oh yeah. Top-heavy.

If you want "relaxed"...go Dyna or even touring. Not XL.

Do the trade. At least you found someone that wants an X1.

The value is about the same.

I think I am going to just save a little and pick up an older sporty either this season or next, and keep the X1. Like I said I love my X1, obviously it isn't a bike you ride all day though. I'd like to have a cruiser in the garage that I can spend half a day on.

Now Barry's Sport on the other hand, THAT WOULD BE A GOOD TRADE. That is one sweet ride he has set up.

But the 87, that would be trade to make if you wanted to sell your Buell and couldn't find a buyer. You can always find a buyer for a Sportster. I sold my 95 with 120k on it for $3900, and it was well used.

This is not a good deal I have a Sportster from that era an 86 883 that has been turned into an Axtell 87 inch mountain motor dragbike.
Bad things about that bike:
1 Alternator is under the clutch basket, the problem is as the splines wear the the basket gets sloppy letting the magnets contact the stator causing catastrophic damage, up to a including cracked cases.
2 The 35 mm forks are flimsy the 39 mm forks that came out in 88 are several orders of magnitude better.
3 The brakes are mediocre the only Harleys from that era that stopped well had dual disks I doubt you could find the parts to install the right side brake.

The good:
1 It is an Evo Sportster like all evos it doesn't leak oil and gets gook mileage.
2 The 1100 head may be the best stock Sportster head built till the XR head came out.

You are going backwards with this deal.

If you go Sportster, go newer.

I understand where you are coming from for a more relaxed ride. I have hurt my knee and it kills me now to try and get my knee up on the pegs. If it gets worse, I may have to go more relaxed.

If you want something more comfortable than an X1, get an S2. Better handling than the Sportster, wider seat and better ergonomics than an X1, cheaper than a Sportster, etc.

my sporty wasnt slow, it ran 10's in the 1/4...
i wouldnt trade an X1 for a chrome cruiser though. all that chrome is just slowing you down. (first off, its heavier and second, you will be cleaning when you should be riding...)
