Glad you bumped this to the top. I was about to. I have a little dilemma with my latest acquisition. It seems I have a signed-off title to a '91 RSS and am in possession of a '92 RSS motorcycle!!!

Somewhere along the line of progression of sales of this bike within California, 2 of the 17 characters in the VIN on the title don't match those on the bike. ALL other numbers on the VIN match, and even the engine serial number matches all along the path of documentation currently available. So now I have the pleasure of trying to sort through this little SNAFU with the previous owner. I can actually understand how this would never be noticed until now, assuming all sales were within the same state: No VIN check normally needed. I'm open to suggestions. It may be easier for me to plow through this in my state than deal with long-distance in California, but I'll get through it. It kinda takes a little gloss off the concept of having the trifecta of '90-'91-'92, but I'll get over it!

Otherwise, I charged up the battery on the beast and it lit off quite readily. It has an Edelbrock carb on it that appears to need some cleaning, but it fired up a LOT easier than my '90 with a 40mm Mikuni does cold. No rides yet.

Sorry to hear about the Marzocchi decal issue. How much bigger is it, and is it red as you wanted?

Thats not the end of the world as if I am right you now have one of each RS model?

RS1200/4
RS1200/5
RSS1200

Pretty damn nice set!! Bugger the years: )

As for the decals yes I was after the red.
If you could do me a super accurate meassurement of your one it would be appreciated as I have my decal guy ready to make some.
Since then I have seen yet ANOTHER M1R decal on a RS1200/4 road tested in a period UK bike mag I bought off ebay.

Gavin

Thanks Hank,
Just to clarify that.... is the one on their the one that was on it when you got it? I am now wondering if they had aluminum or steel ones from the factory?

I have been looking for another one in aluminum but all I am finding are chromed steel ones for sale.

Regards
Gavin

Thanks Hank.
I am having trouble finding any referance to the aluminum shift lever, does anyone know if this was a Buell only part at all??
Can't imagine it was, but I can't find them from HD... I will see if I can find a welder good enough to fill the holes so they not be seen when polished.

Has anyone fitted narrow lid S2 hard saddle bags to an RS or have photos of it done??
Mine set should be here in 10 days or so : )

Regards
Gavin

That shift lever was a stock H-D part. In fact we didn't have to buy them, they came on the motors from H-D. They would be the standard Sportster part from that period.

The shift lever that came on my 91 RS was the plain aluminum one, but it has a bushing in the hole where the shift peg would go if it was to be used on a Sportster.

I have it here if you want it - If I remember correctly I put a shiny chrome one on instead.
Can't see it in my profile photo as it's on the back.

Handle shipping and it's yours.

Those holes were never stock on any Buell AFAIK. The lever itself looks stock.

Mine is different - it has the 90 degree bend and appears to be a bit thicker everywhere.
It's basically a stock XL unit with the bushing instead of threads at the linkage hole.

That one's WAY to cool to replace with one of the stock, and in my opinion, mundane units!

I vote for leaving that one on!

Thanks for checking Mike.
It looks like HD changed the shape when they went to the 5 speed. My main worry is this one breaking from vibration, so I might look around and see if I can find a good welder who will treat it right and not make the metal change structure and be MORE likely to break!

Did you buy your bike with all the mods done or did you make the changes???

I agree...And I drilled the HOLES..LOL..

By the way Gavin, I do believe I changed the 2 inspection hole covers as well now that I see that photo...
Im pretty sure the stock ones are in my garage..Munched up aluminum ones that have a bowtie style slot..
Im am getting oldtimers tho, so maybe Im wrong????Check the reciepts that came with the bike..Possibly aftermarket from CMR!

Court???Dave???Al???Feedback??

I got it from a friend that did all of the mods - S2 stuff, turbo, etc.

Bike now resides in Texas. At least that is where it was headed when I sold it last year.

Hank. Yes it looks like you did change them! Thanks for the heads up, if you can find an original can I buy them or get you to take a photo so I know what to look for new? I have one pic from a period mag that might help.

Mike. I don't suppose your friend who did the mods to the bike might have any original RS bits still?? However small they might be of use to myself or Dennis.

Picture from a 1990 road test. (bike might well be '89 as it has Buell calipers) Are these plugs what you have Hank?

Also interestingly THAT shift lever looks to be the chromed steel one.

The way the early Buells were built reminds me a bit of the way 1970's Ducati's were built... I call it a "Happy-go-lucky parts bin technology".... whatever was in the parts bin that day got on the bike! : ) : )

Interesting that you point out the difference between your shift lever and mine. I don't have a good picture of the rear brake lever, but I'll get one. My shifter lever appears to be 90 degrees and relieved in the pedal lever area.

I'm aware that the RSS lever has a different Buell P/N than the RS (same with the shift linkage rod), so that MAY explain the difference. Someone with historical wisdom will need to chime in.

I have no records of the original owner making that specific change, but in his effort to make an RS into and RSS he may have been more thorough and I just don't have those receipts. ...Or he might have sent it to a machine shop.

Gavin...Yes thats the style I re: on the bike...I will dig around to see if I have those ones ..Bowtie style..Also, note...
Kickstand hardware and chrome...i do believe i was responsible for that too..Also the chrome plug in the hole above the brake lever is a hankb, all the stainless bolts, and the new plastic belt deflector was EFB design NOS.
i also highlighted the BUELL on the swingarm brace...HB

Those caps don't look too bad... do you think they would clean up?

No bolts yet, but if they went surface then it takes a while.

Yup I like the bike, it's a keeper. : )
