Hey guys..

I have been interested in getting an X1 for a while and just saw one on craigslist close to home. It is a 2000 X1: According to the posting 8 K miles, new battery, K & N force winder, race exhaust. Asking for 3800
I'm yet to go check it out, but was wondering if there is anything particular that I should look for/ask him.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Thanks

Check to see if the isolators have been replaced. The ones you want have rings molded in to the outside and are about two inches across. If they're smaller than that and smooth, you'll need to get new ones. Not that hard to replace on an X1 due to the removable frame segment.

Ask whether the rockerbox gaskets have been updated to the metal ones.

Updated chain tensioner.

Most tubers will have this stuff done already. There really isn't anything that needs to be done that is a major job. Replacing the isolators will be your biggest challenge if it needs it which is unlikely.

This is the 175th "what should I look for in a tuber" thread by the way.

A search will give you more info than you can shake a stick at. Go ahead, shake a stick at your monitor. It won't care. : )

Thanks Hootowl. It was the adrenaline rush when I saw the for sale posting that made me do it, I swear! I will do a search, thanks for reminding me

Knock him down on the price if you can. (Now, all other X1 owners will dislike me!)
The X1 is the most fun I have had on two wheels since my Rocket 3.
I picked mine up about 18 months ago for $1600. It took another $1200 to get it to run well but it was money well spent.
When you look at it get him to start it from cold. Don't let him, "just warm it up so you can see how well it runs when you arrive." (DAMHIK)
They are great bikes and are easy to work on.
Good luck & ride safe.

Don't be afraid of miles. Mine has over 85,000.
In fact, I would be more cautious of a low mileage example.
Mine was in the shop at least once a month for the first year/20,000.
Then it calmed down : )

Better to have someone else work the bugs out.

You can do some Sherlock Holmes stuff like feel the underside of the rear fender's hugger for melted rubber.
Dented underside of the muffler near the front for badly landed wheelies.
If it's been dropped on the right side, the headers will have a dent in them.
You know stuff like that.

agreed on the miles.

I bought my 97 with 17,000 miles and had to rebuild the entire top end with new pistons and new cylinders 1,000 miles later (Mostly due to MMI students)

That beinng said, its like working on a 2 stroke motor. Real dirt simple.

How often would you say to replace the newer rear isolators by the way?

If it aint broke, don't fix it. I inspect the rear isolators on a regular basis. I will only replace them if there is something obviously wrong with them (wear, cracks etc")

"How often would you say to replace the newer rear isolators by the way?"

If they're the new ones, probably never. I've never heard of a set failing. They're pretty f'ing tough.

I only replaced one pair of rear isolators. They were the "bad kind" they lasted over 40k miles. If you don't weigh a lot and you ride alone, they do last a long time. When they go, it's obvious. Feels like you're riding a jackhammer.

I suppose it is possible. But, like I said, I've never heard of a set going bad. They're so much bigger than the original ones. It's hard to imaging them ever tearing or separating.

Foximus, if it doesn't smooth out at around 3000-3500rpm, then you probably have a tear in an isolator somewhere you can't see it. At that rpm my mirrors don't even vibrate anymore. I put in the beefy isolators around 6 months ago though.

Of course, I'm still new to tubers and motorcycles in general, so I could EASILY be wrong on that.

Fox, after looking at your profile pic it's obvious as to why it feels like a jack hammer.

Previous owner has installed ISO stiffeners.

If you remove them it will quit doing the Texas 2 step across the garage.

Stock ISO bolts are 5/8"x18x3/4"long.

BTW did you buy the bike from a guy up in the Holly Hills area.

So, I went and saw the bike. 8650 miles.I owner hasn't ridden in in a while coz he has two other bikes. Fired it up..man that sounded sweet! Although there isn't much vibration, it doesn't look like the isolators have been replaced. He rode it around a little bit and brought it back and the first thing I notice is a leak from the front head. He doesn't think that any gaskets were replaced, he certainly hasn't done it.Rest everything looks and sounds good. The 3800 asking is not firm, but I don't think he is gonna go below 3K.
Now there is another X1 for sale nearby. This is a 99 with 12750 miles. Borla exhaust, motorcross bars, asking 3K. Plan to check it out over the weekend. The first bike was blue, this one is kinda orangish red.

Well, I did it! Rode it home on Saturday. That's one hell of a a bike! Big difference from my Blast : )
Got it for 3000 with a whole lot of other stuff including the service manual, extra new oil filters, fluids etc
The steering seems a little twitchy compared to the blast. it has the steering damper, but I don't know if that is set right, I have no experience with those things.
Anyways, I'll probably be posting more with questions : )
