My long awaited Blue 1990 Buell RS1200 has finally arrived in my shed here in New Zealand today!!!!
Very exciting. I borrowed a truck today and went to get it from the shippers, bought it home and unpacked it.

I have never seen a RS1200 in the flesh but I have looked at lots of pictures... so it was really quite surreal to unpack mine today.

The only other Buell from the Buell Motor Company INC was a RR that was raced here years ago that I think went to Austrailia... so I might well have the only early Buell here and the only ever RS!

Now I am on a fast learning curve working out how everything works.

Great fun.
Regards
Gavin

You'll have a GREAT time . . . I used to, 23 years ago when I got my first RS, take the bodywork off to clean and wax the frame and just admire the bike.

I'd sit for hours with the manual studying the various parts, pieces and the pure genius that went into the design.

You are also going to find it's an amazing bike to ride. Before you go. . . get your milk crate out . . sit and stare at the bike and understand the geometry.

You're gonna love it . .

Its an Optional Hankb install, as my hands are bigger than Courts ol ladies, and he told me that she was the only person who could reset the speedo without a knob ta do so...
LOL...Enjoy!!!...hankb..

I do believe I added a few other Hankb mods to that bike..
Windshield aluminum trim strips and a spout on the end cap of the muffler to deflect away from rear tire...
Post some new photos for Us Please..Hb

Thanks Hank,
You improved that bikes condition out of site when u had it and I appreciate that.
I was wonder what the ali strips were their for?

Thanks also for the work history of the bike you sent me. Great info to know!

I even have some of your invoices here, which will stay with the bike.
Did you ever have the keys for the gas cap and steering lock?? I wonder if I could still get them? I have numbers from them on the build sheet.

Kind regards
Gavin

Gavin..No, i never did have the keys for those..Im sure they went by the way side long ago with previous owners..
i put the ali strips on as they help to stiffen the windshield/fairing and prevent w/sheild cracks by the bolt holes..
You will notice i used new allen head bolts there as well as alot of s/s allen bolts thru out the whole bike...
it originally had kind of a gold plated fastener on most of the bike...I still have all the bolts i removed from it in a box..Most looked pretty ugly , thus the change...another upgrade was a s/e ignition box wired into the original harness on the left side...
I had alot of fun redoing that bike and only rode it a few hundred miles before selling it..Twas a blast...Im sure you will enjoy for years to come as the engine is basically new and wants to go....
Ride safe bro....Hb

Thats a larf.... you know you are dealing with a small operation when you see the names of the two people who assembled my bike on the Build Schedule, then turn to page 58 of the Buell book and see them in the group shot! Classic... try doing that with another make of bike: )
I wonder what Kurt Gordon and Daniel Lang are up to 21 years later???

Hank, can I buy the box of bolts and anything else you might have left??
I would not fit them but I would like to have them with the bike all the same.

Gavin..i will dig the box of bolts out and get back to ya with apic etc...
The bike looks great...just as sweet as when I sold it...You will also note, the lower fork legs were black as well as the round hinges for the seat ..They were tired looking paint, thus i stripped and polished...Just a few notes about originality for ya...
Your gonna love it.....

Gavin:

That's a really special bike and the Curaco Blue is significant.

I also know the meticulous attention to detail and care that Hank gave the bike . . cool score on your part.

Sometime . . when you get time. . . I'd like to get a copy of the build sheet, the VIN and a set of detailed photos to keep in my archives. I think I have the build sheet somewhere but I'd likely play heck trying to find it.

Did you get a set of manuals, parts and service? If not, I can dig around and see if I can find any more buried among all the RS/RSS stuff.

Great bike and you're going to love it.

Court:

If you happen to find any of the manuals... I DID get a parts manual, but I'm still in the market for a service manual. I apologize for the shameless hijack!

That's a beautiful bike and a great piece of history.
BTW, does the tail piece flip up or open flat? Never seen a picture with the tail open.

You can have it if you want to pay for the frieght..Its about 3 lbs worth..Pm me your mailing adress etc..

onahog@yahoo.ca

I looked and thats pretty much what i have from it...I gave everything with it when i sold it..Did you get all the manuals , original air cleaner backplate, docmentation etc?
i may have some photos in my old PC too...will check..
I also tried to source the bike out to the original dealership etc...Did you get that info, and I think I put a dip dot on the dash from the dealer...Dales???..{Memory slipping}

Maybe with the vin # Court could get some more info for ya...Its kinda kewl to trace it as far back as ya can....

You can see in the pic the gold texture of the bolts...Not sure what grade they are, but i think gold stood for grade 8..

Anyhow, get back to me if ya want the hardware...

Hank, it cost about $2300US from being picked up from Orest to me, including crating, shipping and tax here.
Shipping itself is cheap, but it's all the add ons that cost! Lucky I had done it before I knew what to expect...

Court;
What books etc would have come with the bike new?
I have a Buell Service Manual with a yellow cover and a parts book.
I only have a photocopy of a Owners Manual.
Are their any 1990 Owners Manuals around?

I have a original 1992 RR/RS 1200 Owners manual here if anyone has a 1990 one to swap?

I will send you a private message and get an address to send a copy of the Build sheet over.

Regards
Gavin

Hank; Whats the story with the spare/original air cleaner backplate?
I will gladly take the bolts I will contact you off list to organise that.

I have paint forks and seat pivots on my list of things to do along with get keys for the gas cap and steering lock and make a sticker for the back saying "RS1200 59 of 102" : )

Gavin: I need the fork locks as well, and my local HD dealer says they are still available from HD as P/N 48140-84A.

Re; Owners manual: I have a warmed-over owner's manual for 1989 RR/RS, labeled as P/N C-1000.3 that the PO sent with the bike. I'm not ready to physically part with it, but I'd be willing to scan it and send a copy, depending on if you want one to hold as an original or just are interested in contents. The 1989 edition may be unique as it covers the RR and RS and may not be the same as for a '90. I don't know.

Regardless, I'm interested in the '92 manual for my '92 RS.

But then again if Court has hard copies of anything available in his stash he might have what we both want!
